Fly-inspired vision sensors have been developed that display many interesting qualities, such as extreme sensitivity to motion, outstanding edge detection capabilities, and hyperacuity. The Wyoming Information, Signal Processing, and Robotics (WISPR) Laboratories have an on-going research effort to apply lessons learned from the fly's vision system towards the development of novel analog vision sensors. The research efforts described in this thesis contribute new finding to both the electrophysiology and sensor development areas of the WISPR project by accomplishing the following: analyzing the electrophysiology instrumentation and modeling some fly inspired features at the cartridge level. The analysis of the instrumentation verifies the stimuli provided to the fly during electrophysiology recording. This work is critical in the proper analysis of previously captured electrophysiology recordings. Additionally, the model of the cartridge structure within the fly's vision system has been augmented to include sensor orientation, light adaptation, lateral inhibition, and spot location features. These enhancements will guide the design and development of the next generation of physical sensors.

Book excerpt: Software modeling is a powerful and cost effective method to simulate and test system performance because its operating parameters are easily modifiable. This thesis describes the development of a software simulation framework for a vision system inspired by the common house fly (Musca domistica) at the WISPR Laboratories of the University of Wyoming. This simulation software tessellates the single facet sensor shape so that it completely covers a given image. A response for each of the receptors within the sensor is then calculated by applying a Gaussian mask over the receptor center. The information generated from this step is then stored for analysis. Other features implemented in this software model include different edge detection techniques and light adaptation for series of images. Additionally, the software simulation is also capable of using an alternate sensor shape that is closer to the natural photoreceptor group. Lastly, a simple graphical user interface was created to ease understanding of the framework and the current features.

The Wyoming Information, Signal Processing, and Robotics (WISPR) Lab is particularly interested in its small brain and exquisite capability to process visual information in real-time, with the use of little to no memory. The following will explain in detail the housefly's ability to extract high-resolution information from the world around it, in order to detect edges and process motion. This thesis describes the implementation of edge detection and motion processing in a software model that mimics the housefly at the cartridge level. Both a symmetric, hexagonally-oriented cartridge and an asymmetric cartridge that more closely resembles the fly's geometry are tested. The outputted signals from the model are analyzed and compared to the biological signals collected by electrophysiological studies of the fly. This analysis is another step closer to a comprehensive model of the fly's visual system that the will aid in the WISPR lab's future development of physical sensors. Additionally, confirmation of the optical setup in the electrophysiological process is shown by developing a ZEMAX model of the optical configuration used in Musca recordings. This is important because recordings collected in earlier studies in this lab provide a basis of comparison for much of the work done in this thesis.
