Book excerpt: Murrells Inlet is a paradise as one of the few areas in the United States with access to both freshwater rivers and saltwater creeks. The Atlantic Ocean is on its east and the Waccamaw River is on its west. From its early beginnings as rice and indigo plantations to the rapid growth that began in the 1970s, Murrells Inlet has prospered because of its rich natural resources that natives and visitors enjoy. The saltwater creeks provided nourishment, entertainment, and a nursery to the creek rats, fishermen, families, and captains who ventured out to the muddy banks.

Book excerpt: An oasis of art and nature, Brookgreen Gardens is America's first public sculpture garden and largest collection of American figurative sculpture. Founded in 1931 by Archer Milton Huntington and Anna Hyatt Huntington, its lush South Carolina coastal location is an exquisite setting for the more than two thousand works by four hundred twenty-five artists--including more than one hundred sculptures and other works by Anna Huntington, many placed in the gardens she designed. In 1984, Brookgreen was designated as a National Historic Landmark, highlighting the number of women sculptors whose work is presented in the collection, as well as the significance of the work of Anna Huntington. Today, Brookgreen has become a cultural institution unlike any other, blending sculpture, historic sites, botanical gardens, and the Lowcountry Zoo. As Brookgreen begins its ninetieth year, this volume celebrates the art, nature, and history ensconced in its 9,127 acres. More than one hundred color photographs; an introduction by president and CEO, Page Hayhurst Kiniry; and a foreword by its chairman of the board, Dick Rosen, bring Brookgreen Gardens to life on the page.

Book excerpt: “Riveting... a personal and highly original work of true-crime storytelling.” — John Douglas, former FBI criminal profiling pioneer and co-author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Mindhunter A chilling investigation into the unsolved “boy in the woods” murder; journalist Jim Cosgrove chronicles his decades-long struggle to uncover the truth of a family friend’s disappearance and death — perfect for fans of I'll be Gone in the Dark and Memorial Drive. For nine years, South Carolina officials struggled to identify “the boy in the woods,” a young man whose body had been discovered just south of Myrtle Beach in a fishing village called Murrells Inlet. Meanwhile, 1,200 miles away in Kansas City, Missouri, Frank McGonigle's family searched for him at Grateful Dead concerts and in the face of every long-haired hitchhiker they passed. Consumed by guilt for how they'd treated him, Frank's eight siblings slowly came to understand that — like Jerry Garcia sang — he's gone and nothin's gonna bring him back. Frank McGonigle was finally found — and identified as “the boy in the woods.” Four years later, the case still unsolved, Jim Cosgrove, a McGonigle family friend and investigative journalist, picked up the trail of Frank’s cold case and began uncovering connections to a ruthless local crime boss and blunders by the threadbare sheriff’s department. When his research began to stall, a chance meeting with the soft-hearted, straight-talking “energy reader” Carol Williams provided a metaphysical spark that reignited Jim's resolve. Although his work as a journalist trained him to be skeptical, Cosgrove found himself starting to become a believer when Carol provided details about Frank’s murder that turned out to be freakishly accurate. In 2019, Cosgrove returned to Murrells Inlet with one of Frank’s brothers to dredge up some old leads and settle Frank’s case once and for all…

Book excerpt: *** 2013 Silver Medal Winner - Global eBook Award - Historical Romance ** 2011 Best Book Nominee in Historical Romance - The Romance Reviews 2011 Nominated for the Global eBook Award in 2 categories: Best eBook Cover and Historical Literature - Fiction Editorial Review - A historical fiction that's easy to read and hard to put down. This novel takes place in 1772, during the brief lull in American history when, for the most part, rebellion is still whispered and loyalties, while questioned, are not, as of yet, tested. The story opens on the high seas with American pirates swarming over the decks of a ship, while others are bashing down the door of the captain's quarters. Once they gain entry, the pirate captain is confronted with not only the British captain lying on the floor with a knife in his back, but an abused cabin boy. After offering the boy the opportunity to join his pirate crew, he soon discovers that the cabin boy is, in reality, a young woman fleeing a royal decree. Weeks later, when the pirate ship finally sets anchor outside the colonial Charles Town harbor, the captain, although intrigued, lets the mysterious woman go. Intertwined with deceptions on the part of the American pirate and the English woman is a love story in which these two strong-willed individuals, with similar convictions yet different perspectives, overcome their differences on a coastal South Carolina rice plantation. Synopsis - Wishing to escape the dull responsibilities of his rice plantation home, Grant Hawthorne sails the seas procuring boycotted goods for the American colonies. While plundering an British merchant ship, he discovers the captain's ill-treated cabin boy, Vic, and offers the youth the opportunity to join his crew. Grant quickly learns, however, that Vic is actually Victoria, a young woman who, for unknown reasons, is fleeing England. They try keeping her gender a secret from the crew, until a sailor exposes her deception, causing tensions to explode to mutinous proportions. After several weeks at sea, the ship sets anchor outside the Charles Town harbor and Grant, though intrigued by Victoria's spirit and beauty, lets her go. While in port, he is confronted with the fact that a tragic accident has placed all the Hawthorne properties and assets in jeopardy. He suddenly realizes both Victoria and his home, are too precious to lose. With a firm determination, Grant initiates a search to locate the mysterious Victoria while he prepares to fight for what is rightfully his.

Data, which results from a postconstruction monitoring program, consist of beach, inlet, and jetty surveys, aerial photography, visual wave observations, wave buoy results, hindcast wave results, and site inspection trips. These data were collected during the period 1978-1982, approximately 5 years after jetty construction began. Beach change and wave data collected indicate that net longshore sand transport at the inlet has not been strongly to the south as previously assumed. The variability of longshore sand transport rate in time and space appears to be very important to coastal response to the jetties. Longshore transport rates are calculated from visual wave observations for 1979-1982. The direction of net transport was northward at all four wave data locations in 1979 and was toward the inlet from both sides during 1980-1982. The only wave data south of the inlet was close enough to be strongly affected by the jetties; therefore, a local reversal in net transport direction could have occurred south of the inlet during 1980-1982. Analysis of hindcast wave data for 1956-1975 indicates that the major southerly growth of the tip of Garden City in the early 1960's may have been in response to an unusually strong period of southerly sand transport. Possible modifications to the navigation project are suggested for further consideration and analysis. Improvements in the Murrells Inlet monitoring data collection program are recommended in light of the conclusions reached in this report. (Author).

Book excerpt: In Defending South Carolina's Coast: The Civil War from Georgetown to Little River, area native Rick Simmons relates the often overlooked stories of the upper South Carolina coast during the Civil War. As a base of operations for more than three thousand troops early in the war and the site of more than a dozen forts, almost every inch of the coast was affected by and hotly contested during the Civil War. From the skirmishes at Fort Randall in Little River and the repeated Union naval bombardments of Murrells Inlet to the unrealized potential of the massive fortifications at Battery White and the sinking of the USS Harvest Moon in Winyah Bay, the region's colorful Civil War history is unfolded here at last.

Book excerpt: Along much of the shoreline of the world, tidal inlets play an important role in nearshore processes, providing links between the coastal oceans and protected embayments. Their study is of particular importance not only for the understanding of fundamental processes in coastal oceanography but also for engineering and the proper management of the delicate equilibrium of our shorelines. This volume, based on the International Symposium on Hydrodynamics and Sediment Dynamics of Tidal Inlets held at Woods Hole, MA, presents the reader with an overview of contemporary research on these important features. The coverage includes: - mathematical modelling, including a review of inlet hydrodynamics, - observations on hydrodynamics, - sedimentology and morphology, - tidal deltas, - processes and policies pertaining to sedimentation, and the - impacts of shore protection and dredging in beaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1928 in the small coastal town of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, Genevieve "Sister" Peterkin grew up with World War II bombing practice in her front yard, deep-sea fishing expeditions, and youthful rambles through the lowcountry. She shared her bedroom with a famous ghost and an impatient older sister. But most of all she listened. She absorbed the tales of her talented mother and her beloved friend, listened to the stories of the region's older residents, some of them former slaves, who were her friends, neighbors, and teachers. In this new edition she once again shares with readers her insider's knowledge of the lowcountry plantations, gardens, and beaches that today draw so many visitors. Beneath the humor, hauntings, and treasures of local history, she tells another, deeper story—one that deals with the struggle for racial equality in the South, with the sometimes painful adventures of marriage and parenthood, and with inner struggles for faith and acceptance. This edition includes a new foreword by coastal writer and researcher Lee G. Brockington and a new afterword by coauthor and lowcountry novelist William P. Baldwin.
