Book excerpt: When author Helmut Brandt is killed in an apparent mugging, P.I. Marco Fontana is hired by Brandt's partner, who suspects this was premeditated murder. Brandt's work on the death of Pope John Paul I angered people in and out of the Church and made him more than a few enemies. His death happens soon after Brandt claims to have incontrovertible new evidence implicating people never before suspected. Fontana doesn't believe in coincidences and takes the case. A former Catholic himself, he knows that uncovering Brandt's killer means more than exposing a thirty-year old plot to kill the Pope: it could also ruin the people named in the documents Brandt is supposed to have. Of course, if Brandt's enemies have killed once over this information, they won't hesitate to murder a P.I. who gets too close to the truth. Entering the arcane world of the Catholic Church, Fontana encounters forces determined to keep him from getting to the truth. Though he manages to gain access to the upper levels of the Archdiocesan hierarchy, Fontana realizes that the web of power and deceit is every bit as intricate, tangled, and deadly as he imagined. As the owner of StripGuyz, a troupe of male strippers, Fontana is no stranger to the seamier parts of the Philadelphia gayborhood. But in this case, he finds that there is an even murkier side to life in the city of Brotherly Love.

But private investigator Marco Fontana has a hunch that there is more to the crime than a domestic dispute gone horribly wrong. But he'll need all his wits and resources because the chief of detectives hates his guts and the evidence backs up the police's claims. And as his personal life becomes more complicated--old flame or hot new barista boyfriend?--Fontana finds the case leads him down seedier avenues in the City of Brotherly Love.

Book excerpt: Six of Marco Fontana's early cases show some of the forces that helped shape the young P.I. In high school, Fontana discovers that he has a knack for crime solving. Not only that, he likes it. When his English teacher is accused of murdering the school disciplinarian, Marco takes it upon himself to investigate. Some years later, after Marco has explored his options, we find him in his first office on Latimer and Twelfth. Trouble easily manages to find him there. From dealing with a stolen DaVinci sketch, to uncovering a blackmailing murderer, to having a pleasant trip to celebrate Pride in NY turned into a nightmare, to presiding over a murderous leather competition, Marco develops his investigative skills and his techniques for solving difficult cases. Crimes on Latimer presents only six of Fontana's early cases. There are other mysteries in his past which will be explored in cases to come. This half-dozen crime tales open a window onto Marco Fontana's world before he found himself dealing with the events of Murder on Camac.

The case, involving a series of gay bashings two years earlier, takes them through the underbelly of Philadelphia's gay nightlife, and Doyle has reason to believe the Mafia may also be involved. Following years' old leads is hard enough. But working together proves even more difficult as the sexual tension between Doyle and Kord rises and begins to overwhelm their focus. As they come closer to solving the case, their team is split down the middle, threatening to destroy any chance for them to keep their jobs. What will it take to get them working again and keep them on track?

When shop owner Brandon hires them to find his missing business partner, they dive into the case. Experienced investigators, they methodically check every lead: Gary’s new fiancé, family members, business connections, gambling associates, and even Brandon are questioned in an effort to find the missing man. When, Owen, the fiancé produces a letter purportedly from Gary saying he’s away on a buying trip, the investigation is nearly derailed, but Doyle insists they continue the search until the letter is proven genuine. Just as they hit their stride, someone from an old and violent case finds Kord, and his intentions could be lethal. Fearing the man may harm Doyle, Kord decides to handle things on his own. Distracted now, Kord can’t pull his weight on the missing persons case. But when Gary is found dead, the investigation turns a corner. Even their client, Brandon, may be the murderer. Things turn violent but Kord, still preoccupied with the old case, fails to help Doyle when he’s needed most. Will they be able to overcome this serious breech that threatens to derail the investigation ...and their relationship?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores how concerns about poverty-induced Black crime cultivated by police, journalists, and city officials sparked a rise in tough-on-crime policing in Philadelphia During the Great Migration of African Americans to the North, Philadelphia’s police department, journalists, and city officials used news media to create and reinforce narratives that criminalized Black people and led to police brutality, segregation, and other dehumanizing consequences for Black communities. Over time, city officials developed a system of racial capitalism in which City Council financially divested from social welfare programs and instead invested in the police department, promoting a “tough on crime” policing program that generated wealth for Philadelphia’s tax base in an attempt to halt white flight from the city. Drawing from newspapers, census records, oral histories, interviews, police investigation reports, housing project pamphlets, maps, and more, Hope and Struggle in the Policed City draws the connective line between the racial bias African Americans faced as they sought opportunity in the North and the over-policing of their communities, of which the effects are still visible today. Menika B. Dirkson posits that the tough-on-crime framework of this time embedded itself within every aspect of society, leading to enduring systemic issues of hyper-surveillance, the use of excessive force, and mass incarceration. Hope and Struggle in the Policed City makes important contributions to our understanding of how a city government’s budgetary strategy can function as racial capitalism that relies on criminal scapegoating. Most cogently, it illustrates how this perpetuates the cycle of poverty-induced crime, inflates rates of incarceration and police brutality, and marginalizes poor people of color.
