Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Missing, Murder Suspected is a crime novel based around a trilogy of true crime events. The first, “Love and Hate amongst the Chickens” was publicly known as ‘The Chicken Run Murder‘ of 1924, where John Norman Thorne murdered his fianc’e Elsie Cameron. The second, “A House of Horror” was also based on the true crime known as ‘The Buck Ruxton Jig-Saw Murders‘ of 1935. This crime involved the double murders by Dr.Buck Ruxton of his wife Isabella and her nursemaid Mary Rogerson. The third, “Four Sacks for a Shroud” is about the ‘Luton Sack Murder‘ of 1943, where, during WW2, a London fireman, Bertie Manton was driven into a killing rage by his wife Rene. “Although at times this may read as fiction, only a minimum of ‘author’s license‘ is involved, every fact being authentic, every conversation based on the evidence of witnesses. In this way it is hoped that the reader will be able to appreciate fully the tension and drama, as well as the workings of providence, which often conspire to bring tragedy into the lives of ordinary people.” — Austin Stone

Book excerpt: To ‘walk in Pimlico’ is, according to the Penguin Dictionary of Historical Slang, the colloquial expression 'to be handsomely dressed'. Comedian, clog dancer, comic vocalist, actor and all-round funny fellow Corney Sage is treading the boards at the Constellation in Whitechapel when he stumbles across the body of an actress outside the theatre and catches sight of the killer as he escapes. Corney was not the only witness. Fellow actress Lucy Strong also saw what happened and when the murderer returns to the scene of the crime that same night, both fear for their lives. Corney and Lucy flee London separately, keeping in touch with each other through a series of advertisements in the trade paper, the Era. Certain they have escaped the same fate as Bessie, they settle into their new lives away from London. But the murderer – a master of disguise – is slowly closing in on them and it is only a matter of time before he pounces . . . From the drawing rooms of polite society to the back rooms of brothels, through music halls, circus rings and freak shows, Ann Featherstone brilliantly reconstructs 19th century England in this gripping psychological thriller.

Download or read book The Saint Zita Society written by Ruth Rendell and published by Doubleday Canada. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life in the well-manicured London locale of Hexam Place is not as placid and orderly as it appears. Behind the tranquil gardens and polished entryways, relationships between servants and their employers are set to combust. Henry, the handsome valet to Lord Studley, is sleeping with both the Lord's wife and his university-age daughter. Montserrate, the Still family's lazy au pair, is helping to hide Mrs. Still's illicit affair with a television actor--for a small fee. June, the haughty housekeeper to a princess of dubious origin, is hard at work forming a "society" for servants to address complaints about their employers. Meanwhile, a disturbed gardener, Dex, believes a voice in his cellphone is giving him godlike instructions--that could endanger the lives of all who reside in Hexam Place. A deeply observed and suspenseful update to the upstairs/downstairs genre, The St. Zita Society is Ruth Rendell at her incisive best.

Book Synopsis Plundering Egypt by : G. P. Wagenfuhr
Download or read book Plundering Egypt written by G. P. Wagenfuhr and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-03-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian engagement with economics tends to baptize preexisting sociopolitical perspectives, thereby assuming a predetermined metaphysical narrative. What happens when the story of the development of economics, told from an anthropological and sociological perspective, is juxtaposed with a biblical theology that focuses primarily on relationships? Wagenfuhr tests a theological method grounded in three kinds of relationships--Creator-creature, estrangement, and Reconciler-reconciled--by comparing these with a fourth relationship: the economic. He argues that economic relationships, and the worlds they create throughout history, are the fruit of relationships estranged from God. Much theology has committed itself to a metaphysic rooted in the reality of economics and has told a metaphysical story that tends to legitimize current sociopolitical realities. Wagenfuhr argues that reconciliation with God is entirely subversive to economic relationships. No economic relationship or system is established or justified by God, but neither does he reject them. Instead, the love of God in Christ speaks the economic language of a people, with a critical edge, leading to loving subversion of any and all economic relationships. This book argues for a robust theology that offers the post-Christendom church a renewed sense of the total scale of God's mission of reconciliation.
