Book excerpt: To one extent or another, dealing with the news media is a fact of life for every American law enforcement leader. However, news organizations, although a pain at times, can aid law enforcement in a number of ways. This text avoids theory and the intangible and concentrates on the practicalities by exploring past troubled times and focuses on what cops and reporters have to offer each other. The “news” is defined and broken down into some of its technical, component parts. The secrets for establishing a mutually beneficial relationship with reporters are revealed, including the absolute necessity for credibility on the part of the law enforcement leader. Common sense policies and procedures concerning relations with the news media, and the importance of an effective Public Information Officer (PIO) is explored. The following topics are featured: newspaper journalism; the all-seeing eye called television; a look at what radio has to offer; Internet news; and what the Net can provide the police officer in twenty-first century America. The law enforcement officer will learn how to give an effective interview, produce news releases that will be used by the media, the art of leading a successful news conference, and the dirty tricks used by the occasional, unscrupulous journalist. Solid advice for overcoming this media misbehavior is given, which will prepare the leader for dealing with the media challenges found at the scene of a major crime, disaster, or other high-profile incident. Instructions for the responses required to recover from an episode of bad news is included, aiding the leader in how to inform the public of all good news that the agency generates. Each chapter concludes with a summary of vital points to remember, and a glossary of terms appears at the end of the text. A new chapter has been added on the topic of “fake news.” Law enforcement leaders need to understand what this phenomenon is and how to protect themselves from its negative effects. This how-to-do-it book is a troubleshooting guide that will enable the law enforcement leader to undertake any challenging media situation that is encountered.

"Obviously she was shot in the city --- she just fell into the county," responded Sheriff's Patrol Deputy Savanna Breeze. "That means I've got -- at best -- assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder in the city. She didn't die until she was in the county. So, this is in the county's lap."Nobody wanted to deal with the murder of Myrtle Dagmar Puckett; the head of the North American Atheists Foundation. But when there's a Corpse In Canyon, a small town in the Texas Panhandle, it's somebody's case to solve and mess to clean up. Sometimes murder is just a bitch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “War means fighting, and fighting means killing,” Confederate cavalry commander Nathan Bedford Forrest famously declared. The Civil War was fundamentally a matter of Americans killing Americans. This undeniable reality is what Jonathan Steplyk explores in Fighting Means Killing, the first book-length study of Union and Confederate soldiers’ attitudes toward, and experiences of, killing in the Civil War. Drawing upon letters, diaries, and postwar reminiscences, Steplyk examines what soldiers and veterans thought about killing before, during, and after the war. How did these soldiers view sharpshooters? How about hand-to-hand combat? What language did they use to describe killing in combat? What cultural and societal factors influenced their attitudes? And what was the impact of race in battlefield atrocities and bitter clashes between white Confederates and black Federals? These are the questions that Steplyk seeks to answer in Fighting Means Killing, a work that bridges the gap between military and social history—and that shifts the focus on the tragedy of the Civil War from fighting and dying for cause and country to fighting and killing.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this journal is to assist in changing behavior, while helping you understand the difference between problematic and symptomatic issues of pervasive anger. The treatment modalities used in this journal experience will aid you in changing the ways you act and react through what is called cognitive behavioral retraining. As you experience this journal, remember, you must put down that old rusty tool belt and be ready to obtain new tool sets that will help replace some of the dangerous tools you have been using in your old belt. People who say they have changed overnight are not being honest, but small changes with commitment over a period of time can be lasting and meaningful especially while in rebuilding This journal was formulated as a product of various treatment modalities used to touch the lives of people who were in classes and training sessions with me over the last nine to ten years. This information is seriously evidence-based and highly successful in treating behavioral health issues I have been committed to helping our families and communities achieve good mental health. Part of that commitment includes saving relationships and marriages because they make up the core of our civilizations moral fiber foundation. By teaching and training healthier emotional growth, we can restore better mental health, because people suffer mental illness largely because of ill emotional growth.

Book excerpt: This is the fictional story of three young women who are raised on the Great Plains of eastern New Mexico during the Great Depression era and are best friends in their high school senior year when the US enters WWII. These young women already know hardship and patience; they will learn about love and loss when their childhood abruptly ends. "It can't happen here" does not save Akiko from internment with her family as enemy aliens. Thereafter, Susan's and Clovie's experiences create opportunities to learn empathy, generosity, and unbiased thinking. Little Texas gave them clean air, wide horizons, the security of a small community. But the bigoted beliefs they learned as children in Little Texas (a term given 100 years ago to New Mexico counties that border Texas) lose their authoritative influence. Susan and Clovie challenge these beliefs and boundaries. I created characters and scenarios that unveil those prevalent in 1930s-1940s Little Texas. Though this is a work of fiction, its characters and their stories are fiction, I sincerely tried to accurately represent and fairly analyze the setting. When I first learned in 2019 about the forced removal of Clovis' Japanese residents in 1942, to prison conditions at Fort Stanton, I was immediately appalled. Writing this novel helped me understand how "it could happen here".
