Book excerpt: The main aim of this thesis is to develop advanced and efficient multiscale modeling and simulation techniques for Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) composite and architected materials. Towards this end, a 3D generic multiscale model for architected SMAs is implemented in ABAQUS, where a thermodynamic model, proposed by Chemisky et al. [1], is adopted to describe the local constitutive behavior of the SMA, and the multiscale finite element method (FE2) to realize the real-time interaction between the microscopic and macroscopic levels. Microscopic fiber instability is also efficiently investigated in this framework by introducing the Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM) and the Technique of Slowly Variable Fourier Coefficients (TSVFC). To improve the computational efficiency of the concurrent mulitscale approach, in which tremendous microscopic problems are solved online to update macroscopic stress, data-driven multiscale computing methods are proposed for composite structures. Decoupling the correlated scales in concurrent FE2 framework, microscopic problems are solved offline, while the online macroscopic computational cost is significantly reduced. Further, by formulating the data-driven scheme in generalized stress and strain, Structural-Genome-Driven computing is developed for thin-walled composite structures.

In many cases, it is necessary to treat this behavior as a multiscale process. This research developed a hierarchical multiscale approach for modeling microstructure evolution. A theoretical framework for the hierarchical homogenization of inelastic response of heterogeneous materials was developed with a special focus on scale invariance principles needed to assure physical consistency across scales. Within this multiscale framework, the second gradient is used as a nonlocal kinematic link between the response of a material point at the coarse scale and the response of a neighborhood of material points at the fine scale. Kinematic consistency between two scales results in specific requirements for constraints on the fluctuation field. A multiscale internal state variable (ISV) constitutive theory is developed that is couched in the coarse scale intermediate configuration and from which an important new concept in scale transitions emerges, namely scale invariance of dissipation. At the fine scale, the material is treated using finite element models of statistical volume elements of microstructure. The coarse scale is treated using a mixed-field finite element approach. The coarse scale constitutive equations are implemented in a finite deformation hyperelastic inelastic integration scheme developed for second gradient constitutive models. An example problem based on an idealized porous microstructure is presented to illustrate the approach and highlight its predictive utility. This example and a few variations are explored to address the boundary-value-problem dependent nature of length scale parameters employed in nonlocal continuum theories. Finally, strategies for developing meaningful kinematic ISVs, free energy functions, and the associated evolution kinetics are presented. These strategies are centered on the goal of accurately representing the energy stored and dissipated during irreversible processes.

The method relies on defining two problems. The first boundary value problem is defined with homogenized material properties and the second boundary value problem is defined with the exact heterogenous properties. Based on these definitions a modeling error between these two problems is defined and analyzed for both small deformation and finite deformation cases. We introduce a new modeling error that gives insight into the components that contribute to this error. To improve the solution of the homogenized problem without solving the complete heterogeneous problem, we define subdomains that include microstructural information. These smaller subdomains can then be solved and included into the solution space of the homogeneous problem through a simple coupling process. Through defining local error indicators that are related to the global modeling error, we can adaptively select only the subdomains with high local error to be included in the solution space. As a preset to the multiscale process, homogenization techniques are analyzed for random unidirectional fiber composites under small deformations. This allows one to systematically obtain material properties for the homogenized boundary value problem. A thorough analysis is provided to understand the behavior of the error indicator under both small and finite deformations. We also explore the potential reduction in the modeling error when including subdomains in the solution space. The effect the size of the subdomains have on the solution improvement is also investigated.
