Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple Time Scales presents various numerical methods for solving multiple-time-scale problems. The selection first elaborates on considerations on solving problems with multiple scales; problems with different time scales; and nonlinear normal-mode initialization of numerical weather prediction models. Discussions focus on analysis of observations, nonlinear analysis, systems of ordinary differential equations, and numerical methods for problems with multiple scales. The text then examines the diffusion-synthetic acceleration of transport iterations, with application to a radiation hydrodynamics problem and implicit methods in combustion and chemical kinetics modeling. The publication ponders on molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations of rare events; direct implicit plasma simulation; orbit averaging and subcycling in particle simulation of plasmas; and hybrid and collisional implicit plasma simulation models. Topics include basic moment method, electron subcycling, gyroaveraged particle simulation, and the electromagnetic direct implicit method. The selection is a valuable reference for researchers interested in pursuing further research on the use of numerical methods in solving multiple-time-scale problems.

The approach it takes is to provide an overview of key areas, particularly topics that are less available in the introductory form. The broad range of topics included makes it accessible for students and researchers new to the field to gain a quick and thorough overview. The first of its kind, this book merges a wide variety of different mathematical techniques into a more unified framework. The book is highly illustrated with many examples and exercises and an extensive bibliography. The target audience of this book are senior undergraduates, graduate students as well as researchers interested in using the multiple time scale dynamics theory in nonlinear science, either from a theoretical or a mathematical modeling perspective.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive study of multi-stage and multi-time scale design of feedback controllers for linear dynamic systems. It examines different types of controllers as can be designed for different parts of the system (subsystems) using corresponding feedback gains obtained by performing calculations (design) only with subsystem (reduced-order) matrices. The advantages of the multi-stage/multi-time scale design are presented and conditions for implementation of these controllers are established. Complete derivations and corresponding design techniques are presented for two-stage/two-time-scale, three-stage/three-time scale, and four-stage/four-time-scale systems. The techniques developed have potential applications to a large number of real physical systems. The design techniques are demonstrated on examples of mathematical models of fuel cells, especially the proton exchange membrane fuel cell.

Book excerpt: From a modelling point of view, it is more realistic to model a phenomenon by a dynamic system which incorporates both continuous and discrete times, namely, time as an arbitrary closed set of reals called time-scale or measure chain. It is therefore natural to ask whether it is possible to provide a framework which permits us to handle both dynamic systems simultaneously so that one can get some insight and a better understanding of the subtle differences of these two different systems. The answer is affirmative, and recently developed theory of dynamic systems on time scales offers the desired unified approach. In this monograph, we present the current state of development of the theory of dynamic systems on time scales from a qualitative point of view. It consists of four chapters. Chapter one develops systematically the necessary calculus of functions on time scales. In chapter two, we introduce dynamic systems on time scales and prove the basic properties of solutions of such dynamic systems. The theory of Lyapunov stability is discussed in chapter three in an appropriate setup. Chapter four is devoted to describing several different areas of investigations of dynamic systems on time scales which will provide an exciting prospect and impetus for further advances in this important area which is very new. Some important features of the monograph are as follows: It is the first book that is dedicated to a systematic development of the theory of dynamic systems on time scales which is of recent origin. It demonstrates the interplay of the two different theories, namely, the theory of continuous and discrete dynamic systems, when imbedded in one unified framework. It provides an impetus to investigate in the setup of time scales other important problems which might offer a better understanding of the intricacies of a unified study.£/LIST£ Audience: The readership of this book consists of applied mathematicians, engineering scientists, research workers in dynamic systems, chaotic theory and neural nets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains articles presented at the 9th Workshop on Differential-Algebraic Equations held in Paderborn, Germany, from 17–20 March 2019. The workshop brought together more than 40 mathematicians and engineers from various fields, such as numerical and functional analysis, control theory, mechanics and electromagnetic field theory. The participants focussed on the theoretical and numerical treatment of “descriptor” systems, i.e., differential-algebraic equations (DAEs). The book contains 14 contributions and is organized into four parts: mathematical analysis, numerics and model order reduction, control as well as applications. It is a useful resource for applied mathematicians with interest in recent developments in the field of differential algebraic equations but also for engineers, in particular those interested in modelling of constraint mechanical systems, thermal networks or electric circuits.

Book excerpt: This textbook introduces methods of accelerating transient stability (dynamic) simulation and electromagnetic transient simulation on massively parallel processors for large-scale AC-DC grids – two of the most common and computationally onerous studies done by energy control centers and research laboratories for the planning, design, and operation of such integrated grids for ensuring the security and reliability of electric power. Simulation case studies provided in the book range from small didactic test circuits to realistic-sized AC-DC grids, and special emphasis is placed on detailed device-level multi-physics models for power system equipment and decomposition techniques for simulating large-scale systems. Parallel Dynamic and Transient Simulation of Large-Scale Power Systems: A High Performance Computing Solution is a comprehensive state-of-the-art guide for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in power systems engineering. Practicing engineers, software developers, and scientists working in the power and energy industry will find it to be a timely and valuable reference for solving potential problems in their design and development activities. Detailed device-level electro-thermal modeling for power electronic systems in DC grids; Provides comprehensive dynamic and transient simulation of integrated large-scale AC-DC grids; Offers detailed models of renewable energy system models.

Book excerpt: Realizing the need of interaction between universities and research groups in industry, the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) was founded in 1986 by mathematicians from ten European universities. Since then it has been continuously extending and now it involves about all Euro pean countries. The aims of ECMI are • To promote the use of mathematical models in industry. • To educate industrial mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts. • To operate on a European Scale. Mathematics, as the language of the sciences, has always played an im portant role in technology, and now is applied also to a variety of problems in commerce and the environment. European industry is increasingly becoming dependent on high technology and the need for mathematical expertise in both research and development can only grow. These new demands on mathematics have stimulated academic interest in Industrial Mathematics and many mathematical groups world-wide are committed to interaction with industry as part of their research activities. ECMI was founded with the intention of offering its collective knowledge and expertise to European Industry. The experience of ECMI members is that similar technical problems are encountered by different companies in different countries. It is also true that the same mathematical expertise may often be used in differing industrial applications.
