Book excerpt: Research on selection and ranking problems and multivariate distribution theory has been carried out on several aspects of the problem. The significant results obtained relate to univariate and multivariate populations using parametric as well as non-parametric procedures. Some work has been done in the area of sequential selection procedures under the subset selection formulation. Also a beginning has been made for selection from populations which are partially ordered in some sense with respect to a known population G.A few results have been obtained using a decision-theoretic approach to the problem of selection and ranking. Currently the attention is being focused on the construction of decision rules under certain 'optimality' conditions. All these problems were examined under the subset selection formulation. Book excerpt: The theory and practice of decision making involves infinite or finite number of actions. The decision rules with a finite number of elements in the action space are the so-called multiple decision procedures. Several approaches to problems of multi ple decisions have been developed; in particular, the last decade has witnessed a phenomenal growth of this field. An important aspect of the recent contributions is the attempt by several authors to formalize these problems more in the framework of general decision theory. In this work, we have applied general decision theory to develop some modified principles which are reasonable for problems in this field. Our comments and contributions have been written in a positive spirt and, hopefully, these will an impact on the future direction of research in this field. Using the various viewpoints and frameworks, we have emphasized recent developments in the theory of selection and ranking ~Ihich, in our opinion, provides one of the main tools in this field. The growth of the theory of selection and ranking has kept apace with great vigor as is evidenced by the publication of two recent books, one by Gibbons, Olkin and Sobel (1977), and the other by Gupta and Panchapakesan (1979). An earlier monograph by Bechhofer, Kiefer and Sobel (1968) had also provided some very interest ing work in this field.

Book excerpt: Let Pi sub i, i=1, ..., k, be a continuous population with associated distribution function F sub lambda sub i, (lambda sub i) epsilon Lambda an interval on the real line. Chapter I defines a class of procedures for selecting a non-empty subset of the k populations, such that the probability of a correct selection (PCS), i.e. selection of a subset which includes the population with the largest (smallest) lambda sub i, is at least P*, a preassigned level. A generalization of a result of Lehmann is used to obtain a sufficient condition for the monotonicity of a probability integral leading to the evaluation of the infimum of PCS over the parameter space. Results concerning the supremum of the expected subset size are obtained. More specific results are obtained when the density f sub lambda (x) is a convex mixture of a sequence of known density functions. The next chapter examines the selection from multivariate normal populations in terms of multiple correlation coefficient and illustrates the applications of the results of Chapter I. In Chapter III, a partial ordering (h-ordering) is defined on the space of probability distributions and selection from populations h-ordered w.r.t. a known distribution G is discussed. The last chapter briefly discusses some possible variations in the goal and the procedures. (Author).

Gupta has made pioneering contributions to ranking and selection theory; in particular, to subset selection theory. His list of publications and the numerous citations his publications have received over the last forty years will amply testify to this fact. Besides ranking and selection, his interests include order statistics and reliability theory. The first editor's association with Shanti Gupta goes back to 1965 when he came to Purdue to do his Ph.D. He has the good fortune of being a student, a colleague and a long-standing collaborator of Shanti Gupta. The second editor's association with Shanti Gupta began in 1978 when he started his research in the area of order statistics. During the past twenty years, he has collaborated with Shanti Gupta on several publications. We both feel that our lives have been enriched by our association with him. He has indeed been a friend, philosopher and guide to us.

Book excerpt: The report makes some contributions to the subset selection procedures - both for the fixed sample and the sequential case. Chapter 1 deals with some subset selection procedures for binomial populations in terms of the entropy functions, which is different from the usual selection problem in terms of the success probabilities. In Chapter 2, some fixed sample optimal subset selection procedures are discussed for model I and II problems in the analysis of variance in treatments versus control, and a method for constructing some subset selection procedures is derived. Chapter 3 discusses a method for constructing some sequential subset selection procedures and some optimal sequential subset selection procedure in treatments versus control. An upper bound on the expected sample size for Bechhofer-Kiefer-Sobel sequential selection procedure with indifference zone approach is also derived. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some problems of selection and ranking for the multivariate normal populations are studied. The major part of the paper (Section 2) deals with the selection problem in terms of the population multiple correlation coefficient. Both unconditional and conditional cases are studied for the largest (smallest) multiple correlation. Selection procedures R1, R2, R3, and R4 are proposed for the largest multiple correlation case while procedures R5, R6, R7, and R8 are proposed for the case of the smallest. Asymptotic results are obtained. Properties of the selection procedures are investigated. Sufficient conditions are obtained for the monotonicity of certain probability integrals in terms of the non-centrality parameter. Which is involved in the negative binomial weights (Theorem 2.6). Tables of the percentage points of the statistics which give appropriate constants for procedures R1, R2, R3, R4, R7, and R8 are constructed and appended at the end. Section 3 deals with the selection of p-variate normal populations. When the variables are partitioned into two sets of q1 and q2 components, the criterion of ranking being the generalized conditional variance of the q2-set (q1-set fixed). (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability Inequalities in Multivariate Distributions is a comprehensive treatment of probability inequalities in multivariate distributions, balancing the treatment between theory and applications. The book is concerned only with those inequalities that are of types T1-T5. The conditions for such inequalities range from very specific to very general. Comprised of eight chapters, this volume begins by presenting a classification of probability inequalities, followed by a discussion on inequalities for multivariate normal distribution as well as their dependence on correlation coefficients. The reader is then introduced to inequalities for other well-known distributions, including the multivariate distributions of t, chi-square, and F; inequalities for a class of symmetric unimodal distributions and for a certain class of random variables that are positively dependent by association or by mixture; and inequalities obtainable through the mathematical tool of majorization and weak majorization. The book also describes some distribution-free inequalities before concluding with an overview of their applications in simultaneous confidence regions, hypothesis testing, multiple decision problems, and reliability and life testing. This monograph is intended for mathematicians, statisticians, students, and those who are primarily interested in inequalities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth Purdue Symposium on Statistical Decision Theory and Related Topics was held at Purdue University during the period June 15-20, 1986. The symposium brought together many prominent leaders and younger researchers in statistical decision theory and related areas. The 65 invited papers and discussions presented at the symposium are collected in this two-volume work. The papers are grouped into a total of seven parts. Volume I has three parts: Part 1 -Conditioning and Likelihood; Part 2 -Bayes and Empirical Bayes Analysis; and Part 3 -Decision Theoretic Estimation. Part 1 contains the proceedings of a Workshop on Conditioning, which was held during the symposium. Most of the articles in Volume I involve either conditioning or Bayesian ideas, resulting in a volume of considerable interest to conditionalists and Bayesians as well as to decision-theorists. Volume II has four parts: Part 1 -Selection, Ranking, and Multiple Com parisons; Part 2 -Asymptotic and Sequential Analysis; Part 3 -Estimation and Testing; and Part 4 -Design and Comparison of Experiments and Distributions. These articles encompass the leading edge of much current research in math ematical statistics, with decision theory, of course, receiving special emphasis. It should be noted that the papers in these two volumes are by no means all theoretical; many are applied in nature or are creative review papers.

Book excerpt: Some 'indifference zone' multiple-decision selection procedure formulations of prediction problems involving multivariate normal populations are considered. These problems are of two types. Part I considers problems involving k bivariate normal populations, where the goal is to select the 'best' population. In this part the 'goodness' of the prediction is measured in terms of three different parameters -- the population conditional variance, the population correlation coefficient, and the absolute value of the population correlation coefficient. Part II considers the problem of selecting the best set of a preassigned number t variates from a set of k predictor variates for predicting a designated variate, the predictand. The 'best' set of predictor variates is defined to be the set of t variates for which the predictand has the smallest population conditional variance (or equivalently the largest population multiple correlation coefficient). Sample size requirements are obtained using asymptotic distribution theory of the transformed statistics.
