Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to multiphase flows in the oil and gas industry The term ‘multiphase flow’ refers to the concurrent flow of oil and/or gas, alongside other substances or materials such as production water, chemical inhibitors, and solids (e.g. sand). This is a critical topic in the oil and gas industry, where the presence of multiple flow phases in pipelines affects deliverability, generates serious complications in predicting flow performance for system design and operation, and requires specific risk mitigation actions and continuous maintenance. Chemical and Mechanical Engineers interested in working in this industry will benefit from understanding the basic theories and practices required to model and operate multiphase flows through pipelines, wells, and other components of the production system. Multiphase Transport of Hydrocarbons in Pipes meets this need with a comprehensive overview of five decades of research into multiphase flow. Incorporating fundamental theories, historic and cutting-edge multiphase flow models, and concrete examples of current and future applications. This book provides a sound technical background for prospective or working engineers in need of understanding this crucial area of industry. Readers will also find: Flowcharts to illustrate calculation sequences Detailed tools for estimating multiphase flow rates through flowlines, wells, and more Integration of conservation principles with thermodynamic and transport properties Coverage of legacy and modern simulation models This book is ideal for flow assurance engineers, facilities engineers, oil and gas production engineers, and process engineers, as well as chemical and mechanical engineering students looking to work in any of these roles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook provides solutions to the fundamental issues associated with wells and reservoirs experiencing sanding problems, especially in deepwater environments. Sand Management is a massive challenge for the petroleum industry as it extends its exploration activities to new frontiers. Challenging ultra deepwater, High Pressure-High Temperature (HP-HT) and Arctic environments require engineers to drill more complex wells and manage more complex reservoirs, the majority of which are prone to massive sand production. Covering such fundamentals as how to maximize individual wells and field development performance, as well as how to minimize operational cost, non-productive time and guarantee flow assurance across the entire composite production system from reservoirs through the wellbore to the topside and flow lines, this handbook explains that the biggest challenge facing operators is the shortage of sand management personnel and helps companies realize the value of their assets. Reference for knowledge transfer and skills development in sand management for effective flow assurance Emphasis on HP-HT and deepwater environments Meets the needs of new and practising engineers alike as well as non-technical personnel supporting the offshore industry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiphase flows are found in all areas of technology, at all length scales and flow regimes and can involve compressible or incompressible linear or nonlinear, fluids. However, although they are ubiquitous, multiphase flows continue to be one of the most challenging areas of computational mechanics, with numerous problems as yet unsolved. Advanced computational and experimental methods are often required to solve the equations that describe such complex problems. The many challenges that must be faced in solving them include modelling nonlinear fluids, modelling and tracking interfaces, dealing with multiple length scales, characterising phase structures, and treating drop break-up and coalescence. It is important to validate models, which calls for the use of expensive and difficult experimental techniques. This book presents contributions on the latest research in the techniques for solving multiphase flow problems, presented at the seventh in a biennial series of conferences on the subject that began in 2001. Featured topics include: Flow in porous media; Turbulent flow; Multiphase flow simulation; Image processing; Heat transfer; Atomization; Interface behaviour; Oil and gas applications; Experimental measurements; Energy applications; Biological flows; Micro and macro fluids; Compressible flows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1918, Jan Burgers, 23 years old, started as professor of ‘aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, and their applications’ at the Technical University in Delft. This can be regarded as the birth of fluid mechanics in the Netherlands, not only as an academic discipline but also as the start of the serious study of flow phenomena in engineering environments. During the period of Burgers’ tenure in Delft (till 1955) three Dutch institutes were founded which to this day remain important centres of research in various fields of fluid mechanics: aerospace engineering, hydraulics, and naval engineering. Burgers and others developed mathematical, experimental, and numerical approaches of a broad range of fluid flows; some of their achievements have become well-known worldwide and can be seen as highlights of Dutch fluid mechanics. From the 1950s ‘stromingsleer’ (flow theory) attained a permanent and respected place in the curriculum and research of (technical) universities, at many old and new research institutes and also at several industrial research laboratories. In the 1980s fluid mechanics finally became ‘recognized’ as a serious branch of physics and an important field of (applied) science. This resulted in a close cooperation between academic groups, institutes and industry and the foundation of the Burgerscentrum, the Research School for Fluid Mechanics in the Netherlands. One hundred years after Burgers’ appointment in Delft, Dutch fluid mechanics is still very much alive. This volume gives a full account of its rich history and also offers a view on the broad range of areas of application: transport, energy production, biology and medicine, production processes, etc. It has been written not only for those working in this field but also for those interested in the history of Dutch science and in the development of science and the fascinating world of fluid flow phenomena.
