Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book solves the open problems in fluid flow modeling through the fractured vuggy carbonate reservoirs. Fractured vuggy carbonate reservoirs usually have complex pore structures, which contain not only matrix and fractures but also the vugs and cavities. Since the vugs and cavities are irregular in shape and vary in diameter from millimeters to meters, modeling fluid flow through fractured vuggy porous media is still a challenge. The existing modeling theory and methods are not suitable for such reservoir. It starts from the concept of discrete fracture and fracture-vug networks model, and then develops the corresponding mathematical models and numerical methods, including discrete fracture model, discrete fracture-vug model, hybrid model and multiscale models. Based on these discrete porous media models, some equivalent medium models and methods are also discussed. All the modeling and methods shared in this book offer the key recent solutions into this area.

Book excerpt: With rapid evolution of hardware and software techniques in energy sector, reservoir simulation has become a powerful tool for field development planning and reservoir management. Many of the widely used commercial simulators were originally designed for structured grids and implemented with finite difference method (FDM). In recent years, technical advances in griding, fluid modeling, linear solver, reservoir and geological modeling, etc. have created new opportunities. At the same time, new reservoir simulation technology is required for solving large-scale heterogeneous problems.

Book excerpt: Black-oil, compositional and thermal simulators have been developed to address different physical processes in reservoir simulation. A number of different types of discretization methods have also been proposed to address issues related to representing the complex reservoir geometry. These methods are more significant for fractured reservoirs where the geometry can be particularly challenging. In this project, a general modular framework for reservoir simulation was developed, wherein the physical models were efficiently decoupled from the discretization methods. This made it possible to couple any discretization method with different physical models. Oil characterization methods are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and it is possible to construct geologically constrained models of faulted/fractured reservoirs. Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) simulation provides the option of performing multiphase calculations on spatially explicit, geologically feasible fracture sets. Multiphase DFN simulations of and sensitivity studies on a wide variety of fracture networks created using fracture creation/simulation programs was undertaken in the first part of this project. This involved creating interfaces to seamlessly convert the fracture characterization information into simulator input, grid the complex geometry, perform the simulations, and analyze and visualize results. Benchmarking and comparison with conventional simulators was also a component of this work. After demonstration of the fact that multiphase simulations can be carried out on complex fracture networks, quantitative effects of the heterogeneity of fracture properties were evaluated. Reservoirs are populated with fractures of several different scales and properties. A multiscale fracture modeling study was undertaken and the effects of heterogeneity and storage on water displacement dynamics in fractured basements were investigated. In gravity-dominated systems, more oil could be recovered at a given pore volume of injection at lower rates. However, if oil production can be continued at high water cuts, the discounted cumulative production usually favors higher production rates. The workflow developed during the project was also used to perform multiphase simulations in heterogeneous, fracture-matrix systems. Compositional and thermal-compositional simulators were developed for fractured reservoirs using the generalized framework. The thermal-compositional simulator was based on a novel 'equation-alignment' approach that helped choose the correct variables to solve depending on the number of phases present and the prescribed component partitioning. The simulators were used in steamflooding and in insitu combustion applications. The framework was constructed to be inherently parallel. The partitioning routines employed in the framework allowed generalized partitioning on highly complex fractured reservoirs and in instances when wells (incorporated in these models as line sources) were divided between two or more processors.

Book excerpt: The massive increase in energy demand and the related rapid development of unconventional reservoirs has opened up exciting new energy supply opportunities along with new, seemingly intractable engineering and research challenges. The energy industry has primarily depended on a heuristic approach—rather than a systematic approach—to optimize and tackle the various challenges when developing new and improving the performance of existing unconventional reservoirs. Industry needs accurate estimations of well production performance and of the cumulative estimated ultimate reserves, accounting for uncertainty. This Special Issue presents 10 original and high-quality research articles related to the modeling of unconventional reservoirs, which showcase advanced methods for fractured reservoir simulation, and improved production forecasting techniques.

Book excerpt: Fluid injection and production in highly fractured unconventional reservoirs could induce complex stress reorientation and redistribution. The strong stress sensitivity of fractured formations may also lead to non-negligible fracture opening or closure under the reservoir loading or unloading process. Hence, a coupled flow and geomechanics model is in high demand to assist with stress prediction and production forecast in unconventional reservoirs. In this dissertation, an enhanced geomechanics model is developed for fractured reservoirs and integrated with the in-house compositional reservoir simulator – UTCOMP for coupled flow and geomechanics modeling. The multiphase flow model is solved using the finite volume method (FVM) with an embedded discrete fracture model (EDFM) to represent flow through complex fractures. Based on static fracture assumption, the finite element method (FEM) is applied to solve the geomechanics model by incorporating fracture effects on rock deformation through pore pressure changes. An iterative coupling procedure is implemented between fluid flow and geomechanics, and the 3D coupled model is applied to predict spatiotemporal stress evolution in single-layer and multilayer unconventional reservoirs. To consider dynamic fracture properties, the geomechanics model is further enhanced by the extended finite element method (XFEM) with a modified linear elastic proppant model. The fracture surface is under the coeffects of pore pressure and proppant particles, and various enrichment functions are introduced to reproduce the discontinuous fields over fracture paths. The enhanced geomechanics model is validated against classical Sneddon and Elliot’s problem and presents a first-order spatial convergence rate. Numerical studies indicate that modeling fracture closure is necessary for poorly propped, highly stressed, or fast depleted reservoirs, and fracture opening can be significant under high permeability and low stiffness conditions. The coupled flow and geomechanics model is finally combined with a displacement discontinuity method (DDM) hydraulic fracture model to establish an integrated reservoir-geomechanics-fracture model for the end-to-end optimization of secondary stimulations. It is applied to Permian Basin and Sichuan Basin tight formations to optimize parent-child well spacing at different infill times. The integrated model provides hands-on guidelines for refracturing and infill drilling in multilayer unconventional reservoirs and can be easily adapted to other basins under their unique data

Creation of a Static Conceptual Fracture Model (SCFM) is needed as input to create flow simulations for today and for prediction of flow into the future. Unfortunately, the computer modelers tasked with constructing the gridded fracture model are often not well versed in natural fracture characterization and are often forced to make quick decisions as to the input required by the software used to create these models. Static Conceptual Fracture Modelling: Preparing for Simulation and Development describes all the fracture and reservoir parameters needed to create the fracture database for effective modelling and how to generate the data and parameter distributions. The material covered in this volume highlights not only natural fracture system quantification and formatting, but also describes best practices for managing technical teams charged with creating the SCFM. This book will become a must on the shelf for all reservoir modelers.
