Book excerpt: The share of U.S. multinational firms in world exports of manufactures has remained almost constant at about 17 per cent for the last 20 years while that of the U.S. as a country has declined substantially. The composition of world manufactured exports shifted toward high-technology or R & D-intensive products during these years and away from low-technology products. The comparative advantage of the U.S., and even more that of U.S. multinationals, were in high-tech products throughout the period, as was that of Japan. However, the U.S. and its multinationals shifted even further toward such products during the period than did the world as a whole, and the Asian NIC's exports moved still faster in this direction. With respect to short-run fluctuations, we find that the export shares of U.S. multinationals have been less sensitive to exchange rate fluctuations than those of the U.S. And shares in high-tech exports have been less sensitive than those in low-tech exports. High R & D intensity was a factor raising the competitiveness of U.S. industries and particularly that of U.S. multinationals in those industries. High advertising intensity raised the competitiveness of U.S multinationals but not usually that of their industries. Higher growth in R & D-intensity also led to increase in multinationals' shares of world exports between 1977 and 1982.

Book excerpt: This book examines the international technology transfer process and the role of both multinationals and host-country governments in that process, with emphasis on the experience of the more developed countries. It explores a range of issues and presents much original thinking and research findings. It discusses in particular the strategies of the multinationals, assessing how far they are willing to accept technology transfer to external partners (as opposed to subsidiaries which they can control). It also examines how far technical transfers are successful from the viewpoint of the firm and countries involved, arguing that governments are most likely to succeed in attracting multinational transfers if they are aware of and accommodate to some degree multinationals’ preferences.

Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, grade: 2,3, Technical University of Chemnitz (Finanzwissenschaften), course: Diplomantenseminar, language: English, abstract: The discussion about the role of multinational enterprises (MNE) which are transferring their technology to undeveloped and developed countries is one of the most interesting discussions in the international trade theory with its authors in the century of globalisation. Multinational Enterprises are generating and transferring technology know-how, knowledge and innovations of products and processes over national borders to foreign countries for making research and development (R&D) in especially chosen R&D locations. The focus of the following diploma thesis is to search what kind of role multinational enterprises play in a globalised and internalized world by focussing how they make research and development in foreign countries and especially in developing countries as the third world. In the first main part of the following work it will be described what kind of role multinational enterprise play in the century of globalisation. For a better understanding it follows a description what is exactly meant by the process of internalization of the markets and R&D. It will be discussed through theoretical analysis and models how the process to an internalization of R&D function. These will be explained through different theoretical approaches as the horizontal model of James R. Markusen, the vertical model of Helpman and a model of regression which used independent and dependent variables for the analysis. At least in this chapter the specific features of a MNE will be explained by categorising multinational enterprises through different characteristics and afterward the role of MNE in the process of globalisation will be assumed for the international trade between different countries. The second part will be searching what kind of m

Book excerpt: 'Internationalization, Technology, and Services is recommended for upper-division and graduate students at academic libraries. Information professionals who read this work will benefit from expanding their understanding of the many forms of internationalization.' - Marc Vinyard, Business Information Alert This book examines the way in which the increasing internationalization of services, including the operation of multinationals in this sector, interacts with the process of innovation in services. The book challenges the theoretical traditions that have developed around the analysis of service innovation and internationalization, and argues for a new research agenda. The distinguished contributors address many of the most pertinent issues and adopt a variety of theoretical and empirical approaches to enrich the debates.
