Book excerpt: Because of our ever increasing use of and reliance on technology and information systems, information modelling and knowledge bases continue to be important topics in those academic communities concerned with data handling and computer science. As the information itself becomes more complex, so do the levels of abstraction and the databases themselves. This book is part of the series Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases, which concentrates on a variety of themes in the important domains of conceptual modeling, design and specification of information systems, multimedia information modeling, multimedia systems, ontology, software engineering, knowledge and process management, knowledge bases, cross-cultural communication and context modeling. Theoretical disciplines, including cognitive science, artificial intelligence, logic, linguistics and analytical philosophy, also receive attention. The selected papers presented here cover many areas of information modeling and knowledge bases including: theory of concepts, semantic computing, data mining, context-based information retrieval, ontological technology, image databases, temporal and spatial databases, document data management, software engineering, cross-cultural computing, environmental analysis, social networks, WWW information management, and many others. This new issue also contains papers initiated by the panels on: “Cross-cultural Communication with Icons and Images” and “Conceptual Modelling of Collaboration for Information Systems”. The book will be of interest to all those interested in advances in research and applications in the academic disciplines concerned.

Book excerpt: Information modelling and knowledge bases have become ever more essential in recent years because of the need to handle and process the vast amounts of data which now form part of everyday life. The machine to machine communication of the Internet of Things (IoT), in particular, can generate unexpectedly large amounts of raw data. This book presents the proceedings of the 27th International Conference on Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases (EJC2017), held in Krabi, Thailand, in June 2017. The EJC conferences originally began in 1982 as a co-operative initiative between Japan and Finland, but have since become a world-wide research forum bringing together researchers and practitioners in information modelling and knowledge bases for the exchange of scientific results and achievements. Of the 42 papers submitted, 29 were selected for publication here, and these cover a wide range of information-modelling topics, including the theory of concepts, semantic computing, data mining, context-based information retrieval, ontological technology, image databases, temporal and spatial databases, document data management, software engineering, cross-cultural computing, environmental analysis, social networks, and WWW information. The book will be of interest to all those whose work involves dealing with large amounts of data.

NetPay provides an off-line, anonymous protocol that supports high-volume, low-cost electronic trans- tions over the Internet. We developed three kinds of e-wallets to manage coins in a NetPay-based system: a sever-side e-wallet allowing multiple computer access to- coins; a client-side e-wallet allowing customer PC management of the e-coins, and a cookie-based e-wallet cache to improve performance of the client-side e-wallet c- munication overhead. Experiences to date with NetPay prototypes have demonstrated it provides an effective micro-payment strategy and customers welcome the ability to manage their electronic coins in different ways. Book excerpt: Information in today’s modernized world has become much more attainable with the use of technology. A resource that has fallen victim to this are library services. What was once a staple of knowledge and communication has failed to keep pace with recent advancements in information service providers. Library practitioners need to learn how to manage change, build influence, and adapt their services to remain relevant within local communities. Libraries can continue to play a key role in future aspects of information provision, but proper research is a necessity. Managing and Adapting Library Information Services for Future Users is a collection of innovative research that encapsulates practices, concepts, ideas, and proposals that would chart pathways for libraries of all types to envision and understand how to thrive and remain relevant in the competitive information provision environment. It is expected to motivate librarians and information scientists to probe further into how libraries would better serve user communities of the 21st century who have options of accessing information from sources other than from libraries. While highlighting topics including artificial intelligence, human design thinking, and alternative finance, this book is ideally designed for librarians, information specialists, architects, data scientists, researchers, community development practitioners, policymakers, faculty members, and students seeking current research on emerging advancements in library optimization.

Exploring the state and state-of-the-art of school library reference services in the 1990s, this book provides an overview of current information skills teaching models, the impact of new technologies on the teaching of reference and the student search process, and assessment and evaluation models for gauging the success of school reference services. School Library Reference Services in the 90s is an informative guide for school media coordinators and specialists, library science graduate students, and professors and researchers in the field to help them understand what students must learn and what teachers must teach to keep everyone up to date in the fast-changing world of reference. School Library Reference Services in the 90s is divided into three sections that cover reference/research teaching models, technology, and evaluation. Topics in the first section include an examination of the current state of affairs in reference teaching, a look at various models for integrating library research and reference skills into the curricula, and discussions of the effects of these new models on the school librarian's role. Section two addresses the profound effect new technologies, such as CD-ROM, multimedia, CD-I and CD-TV, are having on both the teaching of reference and information skills and on the entire research process from initiation to production of the final student report. The last section presents three models for assessing the effectiveness of school reference services and skills instruction. School library reference services, and particularly library instruction, are changing dramatically in the 1990s as a result of the information age. School Library Reference Services in the 90s helps professionals in the field stay abreast of current developments and be more effective in their jobs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At its very core multimedia information retrieval means the process of searching for and finding multimedia documents; the corresponding research field is concerned with building the best possible multimedia search engines. The intriguing bit here is that the query itself can be a multimedia excerpt: For example, when you walk around in an unknown place and stumble across an interesting landmark, would it not be great if you could just take a picture with your mobile phone and send it to a service that finds a similar picture in a database and tells you more about the building -- and about its significance, for that matter? This book goes further by examining the full matrix of a variety of query modes versus document types. How do you retrieve a music piece by humming? What if you want to find news video clips on forest fires using a still image? The text discusses underlying techniques and common approaches to facilitate multimedia search engines from metadata driven retrieval, via piggy-back text retrieval where automated processes create text surrogates for multimedia, automated image annotation and content-based retrieval. The latter is studied in great depth looking at features and distances, and how to effectively combine them for efficient retrieval, to a point where the readers have the ingredients and recipe in their hands for building their own multimedia search engines. Supporting users in their resource discovery mission when hunting for multimedia material is not a technological indexing problem alone. We look at interactive ways of engaging with repositories through browsing and relevance feedback, roping in geographical context, and providing visual summaries for videos. The book concludes with an overview of state-of-the-art research projects in the area of multimedia information retrieval, which gives an indication of the research and development trends and, thereby, a glimpse of the future world.
