Book excerpt: "The purpose of this work was to apply multinuclear and multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy techniques to determine the characteristics of the structure and intermolecular interactions of dendrimers supramolecular assemblies, polyalkylsilane oligomer and Nafion® fluoropolymer. In the one of the studies, a mixture of alkylpolysilane oligomers was characterized by one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) NMR spectroscopy. The oligomeric products were observed to have chains of up to 5-6 silicons. Complete unambiguous resonance assignments were obtained with the help of 1D 1H, 13C, 29Si and 2D 1H{29Si}gHSQC/gHSQC-TOCSY/gHMBC experiments. Finally, the discovery of the quarternary Si atoms by using HMBC technique provides evidence for branching in the structures. In a separate study, multidimensional NMR spectroscopy was used to analyze the supramolecular chemistry of poly(propylene imine) dendrimers that have urea-adamantane as end groups with numerous acidic guest molecules. Data about the close proximity of the host and guest molecules was determined by two-dimensional (2D) nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy (NOESY). These interactions support a specific binding model for the formation of a stable host-guest complex. Diffusion studies concerning a ratio of host and guest molecule helped to support the data collected. Finally, the Nafion® fluoropolymer, used for proton exchange membranes, was investigated using regional or band selective excitation to perform selective nD NMR experiments. The microstructure of the Nafion® prepolymer with the sulfonyl fluoride functional group was characterized by homonuclear band-selective 19F-19F COSY. When compared with signals in a standard COSY spectrum, the cross-peaks in the selective homonuclear 19F-19F COSY give more intense and cleaner signals. To further simplify the complex cross-peak patterns, a q3 and Gaussian 180° inversion pulse was introduced to remove fluorine homonuclear coupling during the t1 evolution time."--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NMR spectroscopy is the most valuable and versatile analytical tool in chemistry. While excellent monographs exist on high-resolution NMR in liquids and solids, this is the first book to address multidimensional solid-state NMR. Multidimensional techniques enable researchers to obtain detailed information about the structure, dynamics, orientation, and phase separation of solids, which provides the basis of a better understanding of materials properties on the molecular level.Dramatic progress-much of it pioneered by the authors-has been achieved in this area, especially in synthetic polymers. Solid-state NMR now favorably competes with well-established techniques, such as light, x-ray, or neutron scattering, electron microscopy, and dielectric and mechanical relaxation. The application of multidimensional solid-state NMR inevitably involves use of concepts from different fields of science. This book also provides the first comprehensive treatment of both the new experimental techniques and the theoretical concepts needed in more complex data analysis. The text addresses spectroscopists and polymer scientists by treating the subject on different levels; descriptive, technical, and mathematical approaches are used when appropriate. It presents an overview of new developments with numerous experimental examples and illustrations, which will appeal to readers interested in both the information content as well as the potential of solid-state NMR. The book also contains many previously unpublished details that will be appreciated by those who want to perform the experiments. The techniques described are applicable not only to the study of synthetic polymers but to numerous problems in solid-state physics, chemistry, materials science, and biophysics. - Presents original theories and new perspectives on scattering techniques - Provides a systematic treatment of the whole subject - Gives readers access to previously unpublished material - Includes extensive illustrations

This book was released on 2006 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate-co-carbon monoxide) (polyEVC) terpolymer samples with varying monomer compositions were studied using a variety of one- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques on a 750 MHz NMR instrument. NMR is one of the powerful techniques to study the microstructures of polymers. For a long time, one-dimensional (1D) NMR was used to identify polymer structures. Although useful for solving problems at initial stages, it can only help to approximate the assignment of resonances in complex polymers. In such cases, two-dimensional (2D) NMR can be used to disperse the resonances in a second dimension, thus solving overlap of resonances. The resonances can also be confirmed by correlation experiments. In the study of unlabeled polyEVC polymers 1D 1H and 13C NMR experiments were used for the primary assignment of resonances. The spectra were found to contain extreme overlap due to various combinations of resonances from the three monomers used in the polymer. To overcome this problem, 2D NMR experiments were used. 2D 1H/13C heteronuclear single quantum correlation (HSQC), heteronuclear multiple-bond correlation (HMBC) and HSQC followed by total correlation (HSQC-TOCSY) experiments were used. These experiments not only helped to confirm the assigned resonances but were also useful to assign new resonances from low probability units. Thus, due to improved dispersion, the study was not just restricted to triad levels but in some cases assignment could also be done at the tetrad or pentad levels. It was also possible to identify and assign distinct resonances from chain-ends and short chain branches. In spite of the dispersion in 2D NMR, some regions of the spectra could not be assigned unambiguously. This is due to extreme overlap of resonances from large number of n-ads produced from the monomers and stereosequences. To circumvent this problem the study was continued using three-dimensional (3D) NMR experiments. The 3D experiments used so far needed a third NMR active X-nucleus; but most of the commercially used polymers lacked one. To study the polymers which are primarily hydrocarbon based and thus are deficient in a third NMR active X-nucleus, a new suite of 3D NMR experiments was introduced recently. These experiments require that at least the structures of interest had 13C enrichment. This allows treatment of the two carbon nuclei as two different NMR active centers which can be selectively excited at two different times and correlated in a 3D spectrum. This approach was recently tested and applied in the structural study of an ethylene based polymer which was labeled selectively at n-butyl acrylate positions. Here, the two 3D NMR experiments, gHCACX and gHCACX-HH-TOCSY, were used for the structure elucidation of a similar polymer of ethylene, vinyl acetate and carbon monoxide which was selectively labeled at the two adjacent olefinic carbons of vinyl acetate. The 3D experiments provided enormous spectral dispersion, permitting the resolution of vinyl acetate signals which showed a tremendous overlap in 2D spectra. The two complimentary experiments facilitated the identification and assignment of resonances up to the pentad level which could not even be identified from 2D NMR experiments. These experiments were further applied in the study of another terpolymer poly(ethylene-co-1-hexene-carbon monoxide) (polyEHC*) which was selectively 13C enriched at ketone carbonyl position. The polymer was prepared with high concentrations of carbon monoxide (C) to achieve alternating polymer where C alternated with either ethylene (E) or 1-hexene (H). 1D proton/carbon and 2D HSQC/HMBC experiments were used initially to assign the resonances. HMBC experiment was not very useful here as it failed to separate correlations from different environments near carbonyl carbons. 3D NMR experiments were extremely useful here to obtain connectivity information in the polymer. Two different environments were identified around the ketone carbonyl carbon. With the aid of 3D NMR, it was possible to confirm the alternating nature of this polymer.

Book excerpt: The comonomer and stereo-sequences of poly(ethylene-co-1-octene) samples with varying 1-octene content and degree of tacticity were investigated using high-temperature (120 °C) one- and two- dimensional (1D and 2D) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques on a 750 MHz instrument. The techniques used include quantitative 13C NMR, pulsed-field-gradient (PFG) 1H -13C heteronuclear single quantum coherence (gHSQC), heteronuclear multiple bond correlation (gHMBC) and heteronuclear single quantum coherence-total correlation spectroscopy (gHSQC-TOCSY). Diffusion-ordered 2D NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) was used to confirm that the copolymer samples were not mixtures of two copolymers with different MW. Quantitative analysis of octene content was determined from quantitative 13C NMR experiments. The degree of tacticity was established by quantitative volume integration of 2D gHSQC NMR spectra. The comonomer sequence distributions and the resonance assignments of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate-co-carbon monoxide), polyEVC* terpolymer prepared from 13C-labeled carbon monoxide were also investigated using high temperature (120 °C) multidimensional (1D, 2D and 3D) NMR experiments on the same spectrometer. The NMR techniques used include 1D- 1H, 13C, 2D- gHSQC, gHMBC, gHSQC-TOCSY, 3D-gHCACX and 3D-gHCACX-HH-TOCSY NMR experiments. With 13C labeling of the polymer combined with high resolution multidimensional NMR experiments, pentad monomer sequence assignments can be made for the carbon monoxide (C)-centered pentads. The degradation of polyEVC* was also examined by 1D and 2D NMR. The NMR spectra show that [alpha], [beta]-unsaturated carbonyl groups are a degradation product in this terpolymer, arising from elimination of acetic acid from CV dyads.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfluorinated polymers are extensively studied due to their low absorption in the near-infrared region of spectrum compared to traditional materials. This makes them ideally suited for plastic optical fiber materials (POF). Different types of perfluorinated polymers, such as poly-(perfluoro-2-methylene-4-methyl-1,3-dioxolane) (poly(PFMMD)) and poly-(vinyl-perfluoro-2,4,5-trimethyl-1,3-dioxolane) (poly(VPFMMD)), can serve as alternatives for poly-(1,1,2,4,4,5,5,6,7,7-decafluoro-3-oxa-1,6-heptadiene) (Crytop©), which is a commonly used fluoropolymer for POF. In order to get a better understanding of the properties of these polymers, it is important to first characterize the structures and purities of their monomer precursors. In this research, perfluorinated monomer (perfluoro-2-methylene-4,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane), its precursor (perfluoro-2,4,5-trimethyl-1,3-dioxolane-2-carboxylic acid), as well as their hydrocarbon precursor (2,4,5-trimethyl-1,3-dioxolane-2-carboxylate), were prepared and studied by 1D- and advanced 2D-NMR techniques. For both perfluorinated compounds, the structures of their possible isomers were proven by 2D-NMR spectroscopy. Due to the large 19F spectral window, this study used selective versions of the correlation spectroscopy (COSY) and nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (NOESY) experiments to provide better resolution and sensitivity. In addition, a new variation of the gradient heteronuclear single quantum coherence spectroscopy (gHSQC) sequence was successful for observing two-bond 19F-13C correlations. Compared with gradient heteronuclear multiple bond correlation spectroscopy (gHMBC) spectrum, the 2J[subscript FC] gHSQC spectrum is greatly simplified due to the absence of splittings caused by multi-quantum coherence. Quantitative 1H or 19F 1D-NMR spectroscopy was used to confirm the resonance assignments and to calculate the ratio of isomers. The conformational compositions of perfluorinated compounds and their hydrocarbon precursor support the idea that fluorination by elemental fluorine is a free radical process.

Book excerpt: ‘‘Biopolymers’’ are polymeric materials of biological origin, including globular, membrane, and fibrous proteins, polypeptides, nucleic acids, po- saccharides, lipids, etc. and their assembly, although preference to respe- ive subjects may be different among readers who are more interested in their biological significance or industrial and/or medical applications. Nevert- less, characterizing or revealing their secondary structure and dynamics may be an equally very important and useful issue for both kinds of readers. Special interest in revealing the 3D structure of globular proteins, nucleic acids, and peptides was aroused in relation to the currently active Structural Biology. X-ray crystallography and multidimensional solution NMR sp- troscopy have proved to be the standard and indispensable means for this purpose. There remain, however, several limitations to this end, if one intends to expand its scope further. This is because these approaches are not always straightforward to characterize fibrous or membrane proteins owing to extreme difficulty in crystallization in the former, and insufficient spectral resolution due to sparing solubility or increased effective molecular mass in the presence of surrounding lipid bilayers in the latter.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation provides a detailed account of the use of multidimensional NMR methods to characterize polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) homopolymer and certain VDF-based co- and terpolymers. Specifically, copolymers of VDF with hexafluoropropylene (HFP) poly(VDF-co-HFP) and terpolymers of VDF with HFP and tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) poly(VDF-ter-HFP-ter-TFE) were studied. The use of diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) 2D NMR to distinguish between resonances from chain-ends, short chain branch (SCB) ends and backbone structures is discussed. The dissertation also describes the use of Markovian statistics to model the copolymerization behavior of VDF and HFP. The 2D NMR methods employed include: (1) 19F{13C} heteronuclear single quantum coherence (HSQC) with continuous 1H decoupling, (2) 19F-19F gradient double quantum filtered correlation spectroscopy (gDQCOSY) with continuous 1H decoupling, (3) 19F-19F selective correlation spectroscopy (COSY) with continuous 1H decoupling and (4) 19F{1H} gradient heteronuclear correlation (gHETCOR). The microstructural characterization of these fluoropolymers is of great interest as it provides useful information to understand the polymerization process. It also provides insight into the relationship between the chemical structure of polymers and their physical and chemical properties. For PVDF homopolymer, a variety of solution 2D NMR techniques were used to provide complete resonance assignments of the backbone, end group and branching structures present in the polymer. Very weak resonances, which have been reported in the literature but have not been previously assigned, were assigned in this work. The resonances from end groups in PVDF were determined using spin-lattice relaxation measurements (T1) and 2D DOSY analyses. The amount of the various end groups and the amount of long chain branches (LCBs) present in the PVDF studied were determined. For the copolymers of VDF with HFP, the different 2D NMR experiments were used to assign resonances from the many different monomer- and regio-sequences in the polymer. Due to better dispersion of the resonances, which is a result of the improvement in NMR hardware and software, many new resonance assignments, which hitherto were not reported in literature, are presented. These assignments were used for the monomer sequence analyses of two copolymers, and for determining the relative reactivities of the monomers during copolymerization. Resonances from chain-end and branching structures in the copolymer were also assigned. Furthermore, the amount of each end group in the copolymers was quantified with the aid of an internal signal intensity reference, 1,4-dichloro-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzene. Lastly, in the study of the terpolymer, the many resonances from the terpolymer were assigned using various advanced 2D NMR methods and also by comparison with the known resonance assignments of similar structures in the spectra of PVDF homopolymer, poly(VDF-co-HFP) and poly(VDF-co-TFE) copolymers.
