The global objective of achieving a desired formation is obtained by dividing it into a set of local objectives which are achieved in a distributed manner. A basic repetitive pattern in the desired formation is identified and a corresponding unique differentiable task function is defined based on the position coordinates of the robots forming the pattern. Neighbor selection rules are designed for the robots in such a way that each robot is part of one or more such patterns. A singularity-robust task-priority inverse kinematics method is used to design velocity controllers to achieve these patterns. Since a robot can receive multiple control actions being part of multiple task functions or patterns, a distributed null space behavioral (NSB) approach is designed to combine such multiple control actions in a prioritized way. A comprehensive stability analysis of the proposed approach based on Lyapunov methods is presented. Simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Furthermore, under the trend of human-robot co-existence, collision-free motion control is now also desired on multi-robot groups. This dissertation aims to design a novel distributed optimal control framework to deal with multi-robot cooperative manipulation of rigid objects in dynamic environments. Besides object transportation, the control scheme also tackles obstacle avoidance, joint-space performance optimisation and internal force suppression. The proposed control framework has a two-layer structure, with a distributed optimisation algorithm in the kinematic layer for generating proper joint configuration references, followed by a robot motion controller in the dynamic control layer to fulfil the reference. An indirect and a direct distributed optimisation method are developed for the kinematic layer, both of which are computationally and communicationally efficient. In the dynamic control layer, impedance control is employed for safe physical interaction. As another highlight, abundant experiments carried out on a multi-arm test bench have demonstrated the effectiveness of the presented control schemes under various environmental and task settings. The recorded computation time shows the applicability of the control framework in practice.

The basic formation control involves two important considerations: (1) Real-time trajectory generation algorithms for distributed control based on nominal agent models, and (2) robust tracking of reference trajectories under model uncertainties. Proposed is a two-layer hierarchical architecture for collectivemotion control ofmultirobot nonholonomic systems. It endows robotic systems with the ability to simultaneously deal with multiple tasks and achieve typical complex formation missions, such as collisionfree maneuvers in dynamic environments, tracking certain desired trajectories, forming suitable patterns or geometrical shapes, and/or varying the pattern when necessary. The study also addresses real-time formation tracking of reference trajectories under the presence of model uncertainties and proposes robust control laws such that over each time interval any tracking errors due to system uncertainties are driven down to zero prior to the commencement of the subsequent computation segment. By considering a class of nonlinear systems with favorable finite-time convergence characteristics, sufficient conditions for exponential finite-time stability are established and then applied to distributed formation tracking controls. This manifests in the settling time of the controlled system being finite and no longer than the predefined reference trajectory segment computing time interval, thus making tracking errors go to zero by the end of the time horizon over which a segment of the reference trajectory is generated. This way the next segment of the reference trajectory is properly initialized to go into the trajectory computation algorithm. Consequently this could lead to a guarantee of desired multi-robot motion evolution in spite of system uncertainties. To facilitate practical implementation, communication among multi-agent systems is considered to enable the construction of distributed formation control. Instead of requiring global communication among all robots, a distributed communication algorithm is employed to eliminate redundant data propagation, thus reducing energy consumption and improving network efficiency while maintaining connectivity to ensure the convergence of formation control.

Dynamic game theory is a powerful method to study dynamic interactions among intelligent, rational, and self-interested agents. Differential game is among the most important sub-classes of dynamic games, because many important problems in engineering can be modeled as differential games. The underlying goal of this research is to develop a reliable formation control algorithm for multi-robot systems based on differential games. The main idea is to benefit from powerful machinery provided by dynamic games, and design an improved formation control scheme with careful attention to practical control design requirements, namely state feedback, and computation costs associated to implementation. In this work, results from algebraic graph theory is used to develop a quasi-static optimal control for heterogeneous leader{follower formation problem. The simulations are provided to study capabilities as well as limitations associated to this approach. Based on the obtained results, a finite horizon open-loop Nash differential game is developed as adaptation of differential games methodology to formation control problems in multi-robot systems. The practical control design requirements dictate state-feedback; therefore, proposed controller is complimented by adding receding horizon approach to its algorithm. It leads to a closed loop state-feedback formation control. The simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of proposed control scheme.

A potential field based algorithm is developed in which geometric, communication and information centric influences are considered and allowed to deform the formation. Control is accomplished in a leader-follower(s) method. One leader robot defines the overall trajectory and follower nodes individually and autonomously maintain the formation while simultaneously moving toward a goal position. The particular nodes considered are the ARRIbots developed at the Distributed and Intelligence and Autonomy Lab (DIAL) in the Automation and Robotic and Research Institute (ARRI), which are non-holonomic differential-drive wheeled robots. In order to facilitate the above, a kinematic model for the ARRIbot mobile robot that accounts for its non-holonomic constraint and particular inputs is presented. Based on this model, a trajectory tracking controller (LQR based) is detailed assuming a given reference trajectory. Finally additional artificial forces are added to account for additional constraints on the optimal node paths and positions. Obstacle avoidance is added to the formation by repulsive forces and an artificial communications force is added in order to optimize the wireless communications channel between nodes. These results are validated using computer simulations and experiments with the ARRIbots on our mobile robot platform. It was found that the potential field algorithm was successful in maintaining the required node formation. The position error for follower nodes was found to decay as required. In addition, a simulation of mine-field detection scenario was shown to successfully combine the three formation influences. The LQR trajectory tracker was found to satisfy the requirements of the formation control algorithm. The state estimate error was low for both straight line and turning motions while the tracking error was low for straight line and high for turning motions. This was attributed to the short duration of the latter and amplification of calculation and processing delay errors. The accuracy of the state estimate errors was shown to be useful in reducing the tracking error over multiple trajectories.
