Book excerpt: In this thesis the development and implementation of a multi-object adaptive cruise control (ACC) system is presented. A sensor fusion configuration as well as object tracking and sensor fusion algorithms are presented to obtain a thorough representation of the traffic scene ahead of an ACC-controlled vehicle.The sensor fusion configuration includes a 77GHz radar sensor and an IR laser sensor for object detection. A monocular CCD camera system is employed for lane recognition and the lane assignment of the detected objects. Experimental results of all presented algorithms are given.The control model and the control objectives of a multi-object ACC system are presented. The multi-object ACC problem is looked at as a constrained optimal control problem incorporating the dynamics of the traffic scene, the driver's desire to cruise at a certain velocity, the lane assignment of the other road users, the objective of respecting certain minimum distances to other road users and to adapt the velocity to the flow of the other road users. Additionally, overtaking a preceding vehicle on the right can be avoided. The choice of the relevant object is implicitly determined by the cost function and the optimization criteria. Constraints imposed by physical limitations as well as by comfort and safety considerations can be included and a receding horizon control strategy is applied.The multi-object ACC problem is looked at as a constrained finite time optimal control (CFTOC) problem with a mixed logical dynamical (MLD) system description. With an efficient way to represent and evaluate the explicit solution to the corresponding multi-parametric mixed integer quadratic program, it is possible to include all desired control objectives in the problem formulation and still obtain an explicit solution suitable for real-time operation. Simulation results of this multi-object ACC control approach are presented and the controller is compared to a reference ACC controller. With the efficient controller representation the multi-object ACC controller is implemented on the ECU of a standard production platform vehicle to confirm the simulation results in real traffic.

Book excerpt: A predictive control algorithm uses a model of the controlled system to predict the system behavior for various input scenarios and determines the most appropriate inputs accordingly. Predictive controllers are suitable for a wide range of systems; therefore, their advantages are especially evident when dealing with relatively complex systems, such as nonlinear, constrained, hybrid, multivariate systems etc. However, designing a predictive control strategy for a complex system is generally a difficult task, because all relevant dynamical phenomena have to be considered. Establishing a suitable model of the system is an essential part of predictive control design. Classic modeling and identification approaches based on linear-systems theory are generally inappropriate for complex systems; hence, models that are able to appropriately consider complex dynamical properties have to be employed in a predictive control algorithm. This book first introduces some modeling frameworks, which can encompass the most frequently encountered complex dynamical phenomena and are practically applicable in the proposed predictive control approaches. Furthermore, unsupervised learning methods that can be used for complex-system identification are treated. Finally, several useful predictive control algorithms for complex systems are proposed and their particular advantages and drawbacks are discussed. The presented modeling, identification and control approaches are complemented by illustrative examples. The book is aimed towards researches and postgraduate students interested in modeling, identification and control, as well as towards control engineers needing practically usable advanced control methods for complex systems.

Autonomous cars combine a variety of sensors such as RADAR, LiDAR, sonar, GPS, odometry and inertial measurement units to perceive their surroundings. Driver-assistive technologies like Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning system (FCW) and Collision Mitigation by Breaking (CMbB) ensure safety while driving. Perceiving the information from environment include setting up sensors on the car. These sensors will collect the data it sees and this will be further processed for taking actions. The sensor system can be a single sensor or multiple sensor. Different sensors have different strengths and weaknesses which makes the combination of them important for technologies like Autonomous Driving. Each sensor will have a limit of accuracy on it's readings, so multi sensor system can help to overcome this defects. This thesis is an attempt to develop a multi sensor multi object tracking method to perceive the surrounding of the ego vehicle. When the Object detection gives information about the presence of objects in a frame, Object Tracking goes beyond simple observation to more useful action of monitoring objects. The experimental results conducted on KITTI dataset indicate that our proposed state estimation system for Multi Object Tracking works well in various challenging environments.

Tracking with computer vision takes on the important role to reveal complex patterns of motion that exist in the world we live in. Multi-object tracking algorithms provide new information on how groups and individual group members move through three-dimensional space. They enable us to study in depth the relationships between individuals in moving groups. These may be interactions of pedestrians on a crowded sidewalk, living cells under a microscope, or bats emerging in large numbers from a cave. Being able to track pedestrians is important for urban planning; analysis of cell interactions supports research on biomaterial design; and the study of bat and bird flight can guide the engineering of aircraft. We were inspired by this multitude of applications to consider the crucial component needed to advance a single-object tracking system to a multi-object tracking system—data association. Data association in the most general sense is the process of matching information about newly observed objects with information that was previously observed about them. This information may be about their identities, positions, or trajectories. Algorithms for data association search for matches that optimize certain match criteria and are subject to physical conditions. They can therefore be formulated as solving a "constrained optimization problem"—the problem of optimizing an objective function of some variables in the presence of constraints on these variables. As such, data association methods have a strong mathematical grounding and are valuable general tools for computer vision researchers. This book serves as a tutorial on data association methods, intended for both students and experts in computer vision. We describe the basic research problems, review the current state of the art, and present some recently developed approaches. The book covers multi-object tracking in two and three dimensions. We consider two imaging scenarios involving either single cameras or multiple cameras with overlapping fields of view, and requiring across-time and across-view data association methods. In addition to methods that match new measurements to already established tracks, we describe methods that match trajectory segments, also called tracklets. The book presents a principled application of data association to solve two interesting tasks: first, analyzing the movements of groups of free-flying animals and second, reconstructing the movements of groups of pedestrians. We conclude by discussing exciting directions for future research.
