Book excerpt: Mulhall's Dictionary of Statistics, first published in 1883, is not only a standard work of reference for economists, but also a valuable tool for anyone studying almost any aspect of nineteenth-century life. Providing ample statistical information on a vast range of topics -- ranging from agriculture, arms, charities, cheese, diet, disease, to insurance, land, marriage, shipping and prostitution -- the Dictionary is illustrated throughout with clear tables, bar charts and several illustrations. Each of the larger subjects is introduced with a conspectus or general table showing the figures approximately for each country every ten years. This is followed by a more detailed description of each country, showing the official and non-official statements at successive epochs. Global in scope, there are few modern compilations that have been more extensively used. Michael G. Mulhall (1836--1900) was a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, whose work as a statistical compiler had already gained recognition through his works The Progress of the World and The Balance Sheet of the World. With his Dictionary he succeeded in 'bringing to conclusion a work which has occupied a considerable portion of my life' and 'exhausts all the statistical information which I have been able to collect' (from the Preface). This, the 3rd edition of 1892, vastly expands on the earlier editions and brings the statistical information up to date. Including an extensive bibliography and index, it is an indispensable source for nineteenth century scholars. --the first statistical dictionary to be published in any language --a mine of useful and accurate facts, with bibligraphy and index --indispensable fact-finding book for all aspects of the nineteenth century

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Dictionary of Statistics: A Complement to the Fourth Edition of Mulhall's "Dictionary of Statistics" The present volume is designed broadly on the lines of Mr. Mulhall's well-known dictionary. And, while complete in itself as regards recent years, forms a suitable continuation of the fourth edition of Mr. Mulhall's book. In the few cases where diflerences may be found between the figures in this volume and those in its predecessor, the figures herein should be taken as the more correct, Mr. Mulhall's figures being sometimes provisional ones subjected to amendment after the fourth edition of the dictionary was published. Book excerpt: Bringing together scholars from around the world, this collection examines many of the historical developments in making data visible through charts, graphs, thematic maps, and now interactive displays. Today, we are used to seeing data portrayed in a dizzying array of graphic forms. Virtually any quantified knowledge, from social and physical science to engineering and medicine, as well as business, government, or personal activity, has been visualized. Yet the methods of making data visible are relatively new innovations, most stemming from eighteenth- and nineteenth-century innovations that arose as a logical response to a growing desire to quantify everything-from science, economics, and industry to population, health, and crime. Innovators such as Playfair, Alexander von Humboldt, Heinrich Berghaus, John Snow, Florence Nightingale, Francis Galton, and Charles Minard began to develop graphical methods to make data and their relations more visible. In the twentieth century, data design became both increasingly specialized within new and existing disciplines-science, engineering, social science, and medicine-and at the same time became further democratized, with new forms that make statistical, business, and government data more accessible to the public. At the close of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first, an explosion in interactive digital data design has exponentially increased our access to data. The contributors analyze this fascinating history through a variety of critical approaches, including visual rhetoric, visual culture, genre theory, and fully contextualized historical scholarship.
