The hairy little animal is shaped much like a pig. It has a snout like a pig. But is it really a pig? No way. Is it some type of large, hairy rodent? Nope. Not at all. Not even close! Javelina is just one name for a creature that lives in large families and roams in herds across Southwestern deserts. Collared Peccary is another. One thing is certain, after reading this amusing story, readers of all ages will know why they should never, ever call them pigs!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I’d Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had is television, screen and stage star Tony Danza’s absorbing account of a year spent teaching tenth-grade English at Northeast High -- Philadelphia’s largest high school with 3600 students. Entering Northeast’s crowded halls in September of 2009, Tony found his way to a classroom filled with twenty-six students who were determined not to cut him any slack. They cared nothing about “Mr. Danza’s” showbiz credentials, and they immediately put him on the hot seat. Featuring indelible portraits of students and teachers alike, I’d Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had reveals just how hard it is to keep today’s technologically savvy – and often alienated -- students engaged, how impressively committed most teachers are, and the outsized role counseling plays in a teacher’s day, given the psychological burdens many students carry. The book also makes vivid how a modern high school works, showing Tony in a myriad of roles – from lecturing on To Kill a Mockingbird to “coaching” the football team to organizing a talent show to leading far-flung field trips to hosting teacher gripe sessions. A surprisingly poignant account, I’d Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had is sometimes laugh-out-loud funny but is mostly filled with hard-won wisdom and feel-good tears.

So when he’s finally able to save up enough money for two pups to call his own—Old Dan and Little Ann—he’s ecstatic. It doesn’t matter that times are tough; together they’ll roam the hills of the Ozarks. Soon Billy and his hounds become the finest hunting team in the valley. Stories of their great achievements spread throughout the region, and the combination of Old Dan’s brawn, Little Ann’s brains, and Billy’s sheer will seems unbeatable. But tragedy awaits these determined hunters—now friends—and Billy learns that hope can grow out of despair, and that the seeds of the future can come from the scars of the past.

Book excerpt: "Radical Survivor" chronicles elementary school principal Nancy Saltzman's extraordinary saga as a two-time cancer survivor who lost her entire family in a small-plane crash. Told with honesty, insight, and laugh-out-loud flashes of humor, Radical Survivor traverses the full spectrum of human emotions. Several aspects of this book make it unique among memoirs: The author has experienced an extraordinary number of life challenges: two bouts of breast cancer (resulting in a mastectomy and hysterectomy) before she turned forty; the loss of her entire family-husband and two young sons-in a small-plane crash when she was in her early forties; the death of her best friend in an auto accident; the premature death of her sister; losing her father to cancer and her mother to Alzheimer's Disease. The story is uncommonly open and honest about what one must go through in a catastrophic accident resulting in multiple deaths. Yet it also shares the strength that can be mustered when necessary, and showcases one woman's remarkable resilience in the face of ultimate loss. The book is enriched by letters to the author interwoven with narrative throughout the book. Most of the notes were received after the death of her family, but some are mementos from her husband and entries from her sons' journals before they died. These sentiments give the book added depth and poignancy. Unlike many books about surviving personal tragedy, this is not a story of religious wakening or reliance on faith. The author finds her way within and by herself, with the support and love of friends and family. Religion is not ignored, but is also not the foundation of her strength. Despite the sadness of the book's key circumstances, there is also a surprising amount of humor, joy and hope. As one reviewer noted, "Saltzman mixes the mundane with the morbid, and the painful with plenty of humor."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gabe Gabel has written the book she wishes she had been able to find when she started her professional career thirty years ago. It is really a two part book. One part concentrates on the bronze sculpture. Art collectors will find the step by step explanation of the casting process extremely educational. Artists who wish to learn more about doing a bronze sculpture will not only like that part, but the complete how-to-do-it discussion will cover everything they need to know about taking a sculpture all the way through. It starts with the placement of the armature and finishes with the decision of the number of the limited edition they choose to cast. The information is all there, the basic tools, the different choices they have in methods and materials, and why Gabe prefers the ones she does. There are sources, and expenses, and many ways to save money that she has learned over the years. Many options are discussed, there are suggestions for solving problems that can occur, and attention is paid to safety concerns that artists face that are rarely mentioned. Nearly any bronze sculptor is likely to learn some tips that they will appreciate, no matter how experienced they are. Dont look for how to create your art. The reader has to bring his or her own artistic ability to the sculpture table. This is not the book to show you how to do a horse sculpture, though the book does follow one horse original from armature to bronze. This is a book to show you how to bring your own creations to casting ready sculpture. But if you do want to sculpt a horse, you will come out with some great ideas to make yours even better. For artists who use other media, there is a great deal of wonderful information on all aspects of marketing and managing your art business. It is a business, and Gabe feels that is must be treated as such if an artist wants to make a profit and to make a living selling their work. It is all there, how to start and utilize a mailing list; there is a discussion on show vehicles and various art displays, (with information on building your own,) show clothing and manners, types of shows, galleries, your home office and computer. Look for letters to Dear Aunt Gabby and her often rather pointed advice. Aunt Gabby has heard it all, from artists and buyers to show promoters. Aunt Gabby is not an art critic,( she thinks there are enough of those), but she can be highly critical of artists and their behaviors. In short, this is a book by an artist for artists, though Gabe does hope that art collectors will find it irresistible, too. Please visit her personal web site, gabegabel.com to enjoy her work in full color, see her show schedule, and read her newsletters. She also welcomes comments through e-mail at [email protected]

Book excerpt: The vulnerable true story of a journey that changed a military spouse's perspective of deployment, herself, and her military marriage. Like many military couples, Corie and her husband, Matt, an Army chaplain, accumulated significant unshared moments during Matt's deployments. When Matt returned, he and Corie began using the term "sacred spaces" for significant moments they had experienced independently. After multiple deployments, sacred spaces were taking up a lot of emotional room in their relationship. When US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter invited Corie, as the 2015 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year, to join his team on a one-week overseas holiday trip, she eagerly accepted, hoping to gain a better understanding of her husband's deployment experience and lessen the impact sacred spaces had on her marriage. As Corie sat in the belly of a C-17, where her husband had said goodbye to the remains of friends and fellow soldiers, as she touched with her own hands the memorial at FOB Fenty and reflected on her grief as a care team member following the battle of COP Keating, Corie realized this journey was about much more than the push-pull of duty away from loved ones. This was a journey to the heart of her marriage, a place where she would have to leave behind her resentment in exchange for ground she and her husband had surrendered to hurt, misunderstanding, loss--and to Afghanistan. Corie set out on this trip hoping to gain a better understanding of her husband and his deployment experience, but along the way, she discovered a whole new perspective of herself and her military marriage. By sharing her story, Corie hopes to help other military couples strengthen their marriages.
