Book Synopsis Standard Colorimetry by : Claudio Oleari
Download or read book Standard Colorimetry written by Claudio Oleari and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-01-19 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colour is a sensation and as such it is a subjective and incommunicable quantity. Colour measurement is possible because we can create a correspondence between colour sensations and the light radiations that stimulate them. This correspondence concerns the physics of light radiation, the physiology of the visual process and the psychology of vision. Historically, in parallel to standard colorimetry, systems for colour ordering have been developed that allow colour specifications in a very practical and concrete way, based on the direct vision of material colour samples arranged in colour atlases. Colour-ordering systems are sources of knowledge of colour vision, which integrate standard colorimetry. Standard Colorimetry: Definitions, Algorithms and Software: Describes physiology and psychophysics useful to understand colorimetry Considers all the photometric and colorimetric systems standardized by CIE (XYZ, CIELAB, CIELUV, LMS) Presents colorimetric instrumentation in order to guide the reader toward colorimetric practice Discusses colorimetric computation to understand the meaning of numerical colour specification Considers colorimetry in colour syntheses and in imaging colour reproduction Includes ready-to-use, freely-available software, “Colorimetric eXercise”, which has multiple toolboxes dedicated to displaying CIE systems, atlases, any colour and its whole numerical specification colour-vision phenomena and tests Standard Colorimetry: Definitions, Algorithms and Software is an accessible and valuable resource for students, lecturers, researchers and laboratory technicians in colour science and image technology. Book Synopsis Passing for Normal by : Amy S. Wilensky
Download or read book Passing for Normal written by Amy S. Wilensky and published by Crown. This book was released on 2000-07-05 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful and wise account of a woman’s lifelong struggle with Tourette’s syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder “Affecting, gripping—no matter what form the reader’s own struggles for acceptance may have taken.”—Elle I am crazy. But maybe I am not. For most of her life, these thoughts plagued Amy Wilensky as her mind lurched and veered in ways she didn’t understand and her body did things she couldn’t control. While she excelled in school and led an otherwise “normal” life, she worried that beneath the surface she was a freak, that there was something irrevocably wrong with her. A powerful witness to her own dysfunction, Wilensky describes the strain it bore on her relationships with the people she thought she knew best: her family, her friends, and herself. Confronting the labels we apply to ourselves and others—compulsive, crazy, out of control—Amy describes her symptoms, diagnosis, and her treatment with courage and a healthy dose of humor, gradually coming to terms with the absurdities of a life beset by irrational behavior. This compelling narrative, by turns tragic and comic, broadly extends our understanding of the wondrously complex human mind, and, with subtlety and grace, challenges our notion of what it is to be “normal.”
Book Synopsis Sound Souvenirs by : Karin Bijsterveld
Download or read book Sound Souvenirs written by Karin Bijsterveld and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, the importance of sound for remembering the past and for creating a sense of belonging has been increasingly acknowledged. We keep "sound souvenirs" such as cassette tapes and long play albums in our attics because we want to be able to recreate the music and everyday sounds we once cherished. Artists and ordinary listeners deploy the newest digital audio technologies to recycle past sounds into present tunes. Sound and memory are inextricably intertwined, not just through the commercially exploited nostalgia on oldies radio stations, but through the exchange of valued songs by means of pristine recordings and cultural practices such as collecting, archiving and listing. This book explores several types of cultural practices involving the remembrance and restoration of past sounds. At the same time, it theorizes the cultural meaning of collecting, recycling, reciting, and remembering sound and music.

Book Synopsis Cohabitation, Family & Society by : Tiziana Nazio
Download or read book Cohabitation, Family & Society written by Tiziana Nazio and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-01-17 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the process of the diffusion of cohabitation in Europe and discusses its impact upon fundamental changes in family formation. It makes use of highly dynamic statistical modelling that takes into account both changes occurring along the life course (individuals’ biographies) and across birth cohorts of individuals (generational change) in a comparative perspective. It is thus innovative methodologically, but is written in such a way as to be easily readable by those with little knowledge of quantitative methods. The approach proposed is empirically tested on a selection of European countries: the social democratic Sweden, the conservative-corporatist France and West Germany, the former socialist East Germany, and the familistic Italy and Spain. The theory and its application are described in a clear and simple manner, making the arguments and their illustrations accessible to those from a variety of disciplines. The study shows evidence of the ‘contagiousness’ of cohabitation, providing new insights on a process relevant to many social science debates. It is thus directed to those interested in the mechanisms driving social and cultural change, the nature of demographic changes, as well as diffusion processes.
Book Synopsis The Emergence of Cinematic Time by : Mary Ann Doane
Download or read book The Emergence of Cinematic Time written by Mary Ann Doane and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2002-12-27 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed as the permanent record of fleeting moments, the cinema emerged at the turn of the nineteenth century as an unprecedented means of capturing time--and this at a moment when disciplines from physics to philosophy, and historical trends from industrialization to the expansion of capitalism, were transforming the very idea of time. In a work that itself captures and reconfigures the passing moments of art, history, and philosophy, Mary Ann Doane shows how the cinema, representing the singular instant of chance and ephemerality in the face of the increasing rationalization and standardization of the day, participated in the structuring of time and contingency in capitalist modernity. At this book's heart is the cinema's essential paradox: temporal continuity conveyed through "stopped time," the rapid succession of still frames or frozen images. Doane explores the role of this paradox, and of notions of the temporal indeterminacy and instability of an image, in shaping not just cinematic time but also modern ideas about continuity and discontinuity, archivability, contingency and determinism, and temporal irreversibility. A compelling meditation on the status of cinematic knowledge, her book is also an inquiry into the very heart and soul of modernity.
Book Synopsis The Birth of the Talkies by : Harry M. Geduld
Download or read book The Birth of the Talkies written by Harry M. Geduld and published by Bloomington : Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface: Few if any events have had greater impact on the history of film than the coming of the talkies, film historians have paid relatively little attention to how and why the transition from silent to sound cinema came about. It is hoped that the present work will provide the factual groundwork for repairing that neglect. Its emphasis is on the history of American contributions to the evolution of the sound film, but significant foreign achievements have not been overlooked. The book surveys the events that led from the invention of the phonograph in 1877 to that momentous evening in 1927 when an audience at the Warner's Theatre in New York City saw and heard Al Jolson speak from the screen. It also considers the effects of the sound revolution on Hollywood and Hollywood film production during the transitional years 1928-29. The published sources on which this study was based have all been indicated in the notes, and the reader is advised to consult that original material whenever he requires additional technical or factual information.
