Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mrs. Sarah Siddons, Vol. 2 The reader will have observed the peculiar attention paid to Mrs. Siddons last season by their Majesties, who made a point of seeing her in all the characters which she had sustained. The honour of such patronage, so marked and persevering, was reserved for our great actress exclusively. A royal command introduced her second season in the character of Isabella. The late king was an excellent judge of acting, and might be said to be well studied in the respective schools of Quin and of Garrick. He here found the dignified declamation of the old school combined with the exquisite pathos of the new. I cannot doubt, however, that it was the exact propriety of her utterance that led to the appointment of Mrs. Siddons to be reading preceptress to the princesses. Book excerpt: Siblings Sarah Siddons (1755–1831) and John Philip Kemble (1757–1823) were the most famous British actors of the late-18th and early-19th centuries. Through their powerful acting and meticulous conceptualisation of Shakespeare's characters and their worlds, they created iconic interpretations of Shakespeare's major roles that live on in our theatrical and cultural memory. This book examines the actors' long careers on the London stage, from Siddons's debut in 1782 to Kemble's retirement in 1817, encompassing Kemble's time as theatre manager, when he sought to foreground their strengths as Shakespearean performers in his productions. Over the course of more than thirty years, Siddons and Kemble appeared opposite one another in many Shakespeare plays, including King John, Henry VIII, Coriolanus and Macbeth. The actors had to negotiate two major Shakespeare scandals: the staging of Vortigern – a fake Shakespearean play – in 1796 and the Old Price Riots of 1809, during which the audience challenged Siddons's and Kemble's perceived attempts to control Shakespeare. Fiona Ritchie examines the siblings' careers, focusing on their collaborations, as well as placing Siddons's and Kemble's Shakespeare performances in the context of contemporary 18th- and 19th-century drama. The volume not only offers a detailed consideration of London theatre, but also explores the importance of provincial performance to the actors, notably in the case of Hamlet – a role in which both appeared across Britain and in Ireland.

Book excerpt: A Passion for Performance: Sarah Siddons and Her Portraitists brings together three engaging essays – by Robyn Asleson, Shelley Bennett and Mark Leonard, and Shearer West – that recreate the eventful life, both on and off the stage, of the great eighteenth-century actress Sarah Siddons. Siddons was renowned for her bravura performances in tragic roles, and her fame was enhanced by the many portraits of her painted by the leading artists of the day. The greatest of these was Sir Joshua Reynolds’s Sarah Siddons as the Tragic Muse, a painting now in the Huntington Art Collections and recently studied at the Getty Center. A Passion for Performance places this magnificent portrait within the context of Siddons’s career as an actress and cultural icon. Includes a chronology of Siddons’s life by volume editor Robyn Asleson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1929 Virginia Woolf articulated one part of the feminist historical project: 'We think back through our mothers if we are women' (A Room of One's Own, Hogarth Press, 1929). By 'mothers', it becomes clear, she meant mould-breaking foremothers. But where do we find such mothers? And who were the mould-breaking forerunners to whom they looked back, and the mould-breakers before them? This annotated bibliography of 365 entries cites collective biographies which contain entries on women. It includes publications from the Middle Ages to the end of the nineteenth century, and provides both an important contribution to British historiography of the period, and an aid and stimulus to further research into women's history.Arranged chronologically, the bibliography covers encyclopedic collections of 'great lives', both male and female; collections of heterogeneous women-only biography; and collective biographies of particular categories of women - saints, martyrs, actresses, felons, writers, artists, missionaries, etc. Annotations focus on the individual women included in the works cited, and the ways in which they are represented by biographers and compilers, who were usually men. The chronological arrangement allows a progressive history of women - and attitudes towards women - in Britain to emerge. There are extensive name and category indexes, and 44 black and white portraits of some of the women featured in the works cited.1999 o 188 pages o 44 b/w illus o Hardback o 0 7201 2321 6 o 65.00
