Book excerpt: Working with Mr Wright. is a personal recollection by one of Frank Lloyd Wright's former apprentices of his years at the Taliesin Fellowship. Curtis Besinger provides a lively account of daily life in this community of architects established by Wright in Wisconsin and Arizona. An apprenticeship with the Fellowship entailed architectural tasks, such as drafting, designing, and overseeing projects, including the actual building of Taliesin West; as well as humbler assignments - from milking the cows to harvesting wheat - related to maintaining the farm that surrounds the Fellowship in Wisconsin. The social life of the Fellowship, filled with music and film, and planned in detail by Wright himself, is also recounted with wit and humor. Through these engaging recollections, illustrated with photographs, plans, and drawings made during Besinger's years at the Fellowship, Wright's eccentric personality, his working practices, and his unique creative vision emerge, along with a host of personalities who contributed to the unique Taliesin experience.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD AND NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FINALIST • From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Looming Tower comes “an utterly necessary story” (The Wall Street Journal) that pulls back the curtain on the church of Scientology: one of the most secretive organizations at work today. • The Basis for the HBO Documentary. Scientology presents itself as a scientific approach to spiritual enlightenment, but its practices have long been shrouded in mystery. Now Lawrence Wright—armed with his investigative talents, years of archival research, and more than two hundred personal interviews with current and former Scientologists—uncovers the inner workings of the church. We meet founder L. Ron Hubbard, the highly imaginative but mentally troubled science-fiction writer, and his tough, driven successor, David Miscavige. We go inside their specialized cosmology and language. We learn about the church’s legal attacks on the IRS, its vindictive treatment of critics, and its phenomenal wealth. We see the church court celebrities such as Tom Cruise while consigning its clergy to hard labor under billion-year contracts. Through it all, Wright asks what fundamentally comprises a religion, and if Scientology in fact merits this Constitutionally-protected label.

Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Looming Tower, and the pandemic novel The End of October: an unprecedented, momentous account of Covid-19—its origins, its wide-ranging repercussions, and the ongoing global fight to contain it "A book of panoramic breadth ... managing to surprise us about even those episodes we … thought we knew well … [With] lively exchanges about spike proteins and nonpharmaceutical interventions and disease waves, Wright’s storytelling dexterity makes all this come alive.” —The New York Times Book Review From the fateful first moments of the outbreak in China to the storming of the U.S. Capitol to the extraordinary vaccine rollout, Lawrence Wright’s The Plague Year tells the story of Covid-19 in authoritative, galvanizing detail and with the full drama of events on both a global and intimate scale, illuminating the medical, economic, political, and social ramifications of the pandemic. Wright takes us inside the CDC, where a first round of faulty test kits lost America precious time . . . inside the halls of the White House, where Deputy National Security Adviser Matthew Pottinger’s early alarm about the virus was met with confounding and drastically costly skepticism . . . into a Covid ward in a Charlottesville hospital, with an idealistic young woman doctor from the town of Little Africa, South Carolina . . . into the precincts of prediction specialists at Goldman Sachs . . . into Broadway’s darkened theaters and Austin’s struggling music venues . . . inside the human body, diving deep into the science of how the virus and vaccines function—with an eye-opening detour into the history of vaccination and of the modern anti-vaccination movement. And in this full accounting, Wright makes clear that the medical professionals around the country who’ve risked their lives to fight the virus reveal and embody an America in all its vulnerability, courage, and potential. In turns steely-eyed, sympathetic, infuriated, unexpectedly comical, and always precise, Lawrence Wright is a formidable guide, slicing through the dense fog of misinformation to give us a 360-degree portrait of the catastrophe we thought we knew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of nineteen collections of poems, Charles Wright has built "one of the truly distinctive bodies of poetry created in the second half of the twentieth century" (David Young, Contemporary Poets). Bye-and-Bye, which brings together selections from Wright's more recent work—including the entirety of Littlefoot, Wright's moving, book-length meditation on mortality—showcases the themes and images that have defined his mature work: the true affinity between writer and subject, human and nature; the tenuous relationship between description and actuality; and the search for a truth that transcends change and death. Bye-and-Bye is a wonderful introduction to the late work of one of America's finest and best-loved poets.

Book excerpt: Aimed at students of classics and of philosophy who would like a taste of the subject before being committed to a full course and at those who have already started and need to find their bearings in what may seem at first a complex maze of names and schools, "Introducing Greek Philosophy" is a concise, lively, philosophically aware introduction to ancient Greek philosophy. The book begins with the Milesians in Asia Minor before moving over to the developments in the western Greek world, then focusing on Socrates, Plato and Aristotle in Athens, finishing with the Hellenistic schools and their arrival in Rome, where the main ideas are set out in the Latin poetry of Lucretius and the prose of Cicero. The book eschews the method of most histories of ancient philosophy of addressing one thinker after another through the centuries. Instead, after a basic mapping of the territory, it takes the great themes that the Greeks were engaged in from the earliest times, and looks at them individually, their development in argument and counter-argument, from the beginnings of recorded Greek history, through the various upheavals of tyrannies, democracies, oligarchies and kingships, to their introduction into Rome in the first century BC.

Book excerpt: "Wright for Wright is the first book to focus exclusively on the twenty houses and other structures Frank Lloyd Wright built for himself and his family. Free from the constraints and, in Wright's case, conflict of the client-architect relationship, these houses present Wright at his unfettered best: building and constantly renovating in the materials and locations that mattered to him most. Photographed for the first time in full-color panoramic shots by longtime Wright photographer Roger Straus, these shots capture the houses as part of landscape - the way Wright envisioned them." "During his lifetime, Wright built three residences for himself: the Home and Studio in suburban Oak Park, Illinois; Taliesin on family land in Spring Green, Wisconsin; and Taliesin West in the desert town of Scottsdale, Arizona. Treated as three distinct stages in a time-line of the architect's long and varied career, these houses constitute a kind of architectural biography, with all the important threads of Wright's life and philosophy interwoven, and in the case of Taliesin, punctuated by fire and even murder. But Wright for Wright looks beyond these houses to those that Wright designed for his sons David Wright and Robert Llewellyn Wright, and to the house he built for his cousin Richard Lloyd Jones. Wright for Wright also examines the structures Wright built for the Lloyd Joneses, such as Unity Chapel, and for his aunts Nell and Jane Lloyd Jones he built the Hillside Home School as well as the Romeo and Juliet Windmill. For his sister Jane Porter he built Tan-Y-Deri House, and for himself he built Midway Farm at Taliesin as well as the Music Pavilion at Taliesin West."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Oh to live life like Ronald Wright! Spiritualist writer, gay magazine illustrator, celebrity portrait artist, artist's model and psychic medium, Ronald Wright's life has been filled with strange encounters and extraordinary experiences. Seduced by the sparkle of cinema's entertainers the young Ronald Wright was drawn to London's West End in the early 1950s. With youthful determination Wright found ways to meet the stars he idolized, and more importantly stumbled upon the secret World of London's homosexual scene. First gaining a reputation drawing the likeness of 'Theatreland' stars such as Marlene Dietrich, Mae West and Vivien Leigh, Wright eventually turned his graphic skills to the burgeoning 'Physique' and 'Men's Interest' magazine industry. Wright's artwork featured in many of the internationally renowned publications including Fizeek, Adonis, Sir Gay, Male Classics, Modern Man and Body Beautiful. Imprisoned for being gay in 1959, he was released a year later and began a successful career as artist model, most notable posing as 'the body' of Rudolf Nureyev for a Madam Tussaud's waxwork. Priapically blessed, Wright himself became entertainer, model and muse, performing at private parties and clubs throughout the 1960s. The 1970s and 8Os saw Wright's interest in the spiritual world taking centre stage. After a visitation from 'The Spirit of Light' during a seance in Belgrave Square, he became a man with a mission to channel, write and distribute the message of Hafed Prince of Persia, leader of the legendary 'Three Magi' of biblical fame. He also became a well known healer. These are Ronald Wright's memoirs, illustrated with more than 30 pages of original photographs and artwork, telling the story a very unconventional life, which may shock many even in today's more enlightened times.
