WAR By Michael Abtzybashev ACT I It is a bright, sunny day in spring. The trees are in blossom in front of an old nobleman's house with columns and a terrace, and broad steps leading down to the garden. On the terrace is a large rush-bottom armchair, and on one side under a large tree a garden bench. In front of the house lies a circular plot of ground with early spring flowers. Beyond the trees is seen a railing and a wicket gate opening into a city street. Olga Petbovna, the mother, is at world in the -flower patch, while Piotb Ivanovich, her husband, stands looking on, smoking. He is in a light uniform and is hatless. Olga. You had better put your cap on, Piotr. You'll catch cold. Piotb. Oh, no; I'm warm. Olga. Yes, warm. You think so. It's just the kind of weather one is apt to catch a cold in. I'll tell Katya to bring you your cap. Piotb. Don't; I don't want it. Olga. [Not heeding him, she calls.] Katya, Katya. Katya. [Coming out on the terrace.] What is it? Olga. Fetch your master's cap, and tell Aksinya to start a fire in the fireplace. Katya. Yes, ma'am. [She goes out.] Piotb. [Looking at his watch.] It's time for coffee. Will you finish soon? Olga. What time is it? Piotb. Half past twelve--time long ago. Olga. I'll be through in a moment. I must tell Sidorenko to water the flowers every evening. He never does a stroke of work, anyway--just runs after Katya the whole day. Katya. [As she glides quickly down the steps.] Here's your cap, Master. Olga. Is Vladimir Aleksandrovich up yet? Katya. Yes, he is; he's washing. Shall I get the coffee ready? Olga. Yes, yes. Take a clean tablecloth from the sideboard. And be careful not to soil it at once the way you always do. I can never keep a large enough supply of tablecloths. Katya. All...

Book excerpt: This volume provides a first-hand survey of the arts and literature during a crucial period in modern culture, 1915–1924. Pound was then associated with such germinal magazines as BLAST, The Little Review, The Egoist, and Poetry; he was discovering or publicizing writers such as Robert Frost, Hilda Doolittle, T. S. Eliot, and James Joyce; and he was championing the painters Wyndham Lewis and William Wadsworth as well as the sculptors Jacob Epstein, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, and Constantin Brancusi. Pound wrote to John Quinn—a New York lawyer, an expert in business law, and a collector of unusual taste and discrimination—about these artists and many more, urging him to support their journals, collect their manuscripts, and buy and exhibit their paintings and sculptures. Quinn at one time owned manuscripts of Ulysses and The Waste Land, Brancusi’s sculpture Mlle. Pogany, and Picasso’s painting Three Musicians. Yet he was often skeptical about the value of new schools of art, such as Vorticism, and disturbed by the outspokenness of authors such as Joyce. Pound’s letters are unusually tactful when he counters Quinn’s doubts and explains the premises of experimental art. Pound’s letters to Quinn are touched with his characteristic humor and wordplay and are especially notable for their lucidity of expression, engendered by Pound’s deep respect for Quinn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Hollywood has long been called “The Dream Factory,” and theatrical entertainment more broadly has been called “The Industry,” the significance of these names has rarely been explored. There are in fact striking overlaps between industrial rhetoric and practice and the development of theatrical and cinematic techniques for rehearsal and performance. Interchangeable Parts examines the history of acting pedagogy and performance practice in the United States, and their debts to industrial organization and philosophy. Ranging from the late nineteenth century through the end of the twentieth, the book recontextualizes the history of theatrical technique in light of the embrace of industrialization in US culture and society. Victor Holtcamp explores the invocations of scientific and industrial rhetoric and philosophy in the founding of the first schools of acting, and echoes of that rhetoric in playwriting, production, and the cinema, as Hollywood in particular embraced this industrially infected model of acting. In their divergent approaches to performance, the major US acting teachers (Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler, and Sanford Meisner) demonstrated strong rhetorical affinities for the language of industry, illustrating the pervasive presence of these industrial roots. The book narrates the story of how actors learned to learn to act, and what that process, for both stage and screen, owed to the interchangeable parts and mass production revolutions.

This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the story, told firsthand through electric, deeply engaged writing, of America’s living theater, high and low, mainstream and experimental. Drawing on history, criticism, memoir, fiction, poetry, and parody, editor Laurence Senelick presents writers with the special knack “to distill both the immediate experience and the recollected impression, to draw the reader into the charmed circle and conjure up what has already vanished.” Through the words of playwrights and critics, actors and directors, and others behind the footlights, the entertainments and high artistic strivings of successive eras come vividly, sometimes tumultuously, to life. Observers from Washington Irving and Fanny Trollope to Walt Whitman and Mark Twain evoke the world of the nineteenth-century playhouse in all its raucous vitality. Henry James confesses his early enthusiasm for playgoing; Willa Cather reviews provincial productions of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Antony and Cleopatra. The increasing diversity and ambition of the American theater is reflected in Hutchins Hapgood’s account of New York’s Yiddish theaters at the turn of the century, Carl Van Vechten’s review of the Sicilian actress Mimi Aguglia, Alain Locke’s comments on the emerging African-American theater in the 1920s, and Ezra Pound’s response to James Joyce’s play Exiles and theatrical modernism. Enthusiasts for the New Stagecraft, such as Lee Simonson and Djuna Barnes, are matched by champions of pop culture such as Gilbert Seldes and Fred Allen. S. J. Perelman lampoons Clifford Odets; Edmund Wilson acclaims Minsky’s Burlesque; Harold Clurman explains Stanislavski’s Method; Gore Vidal dissects the compromises of commercial playwriting. A host of playwrights—among them Thornton Wilder, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Lorraine Hansberry, Edward Albee, Wendy Wasserstein, David Mamet, and Tony Kushner—are joined by such renowned critics as Stark Young, George Jean Nathan, Brooks Atkinson, and Eric Bentley. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

Book excerpt: The Collected Critical Heritage II comprises 40 volumes covering nineteenth and twentieth century European and American authors. These volumes will be available as a complete set, mini boxed sets (by theme) or as individual volumes. This second set compliments the first 68 volume set of Critical Heritage published by Routledge in October 1995. The Critical Heritage series gathers together a large body of critical figures in literature. These carefully selected sources include: * comtemporary reviews from both popular and literary media. In these students can read about how Lady Chatterly's Lover shocked contemporary reviewers or what Ibsen's Doll's House meant to the early women's movement. * little-known documentary material, such as diaries and correspondence - often between authors and their publishers and critics. * landmark essays in the history of criticism. * significant pieces of criticism from later periods to demonstrate how an author's reputation changed over time.
