In this timeless new series, evocative of vintage-styled 1960’s illustrated early reader books, an adventurous cat explores city living. Lying on his belly soaking up the warm sun and listening to the birds outside, Mr. Fluff had the perfect life, or so he thought. When the orange tabby goes for a car ride one day with his human family, he ends up in a building that reaches the sky, a place the humans call their new home. So begins the escapades of Mr. Fluff the cat in this classically styled early reader, Mr. Fluff and the Tall Tower, the debut title in The Adventures of Mr. Fluff early reader series by David Brandt. Mr. Fluff isn’t sure he likes apartment living—he is an outdoor cat, after all. He needs some convincing. When he sneaks out into the hallway of his new apartment and meets a sweet neighbor who shares a strange and delicious treat, Mr. Fluff decides maybe city living isn’t so bad. “Why, hello!” said a grey-haired woman as she looked down at Mr. Fluff with a smile. “Where on earth did you come from?” She took one of the slices of pastrami out of the small bag. Then she took a knife and chopped it up into tiny pieces and put it on a pretty plate. She put the plate down on the ground. Mr. Fluff loved the delicious meat with a salty, spicy flavor. He decided that pastrami was his new favorite food. Author David Brandt expertly weaves an early reader in a vintage fashion reminiscent of Frog and Toad and illustrated in a charming retro style by Olga Lavrova with soft painterly images evocative of the timeless art of Emil Weiss. Perfect for the youngest readers, Brandt’s stories use a nostalgic language style, pointedly incorporating sight words which are reiterated in a glossary at the book’s end, to bring a whimsical and fun tale featuring his gallant and venturous character, Mr. Fluff.

In this timeless new series, evocative of vintage-styled 1960’s illustrated early reader books, an adventurous cat believes he is the teacher of the music lessons - not his owner Ian.. Today was Ian’s first day back teaching music lessons to children just like he used to before they moved to their new home in the Tall Tower. It was the job of Mr. Fluff to help Ian teach the lessons. He could tell it was almost time to begin because Ian was buzzing all around the office nervously getting things ready. “OK,” Ian said, “The piano is tuned and ready to go and here is all the music I will give to the students. Am I forgetting something? What am I forgetting?” “Treats,” meowed Mr. Fluff, “You always give them candy.” “Candy!” shouted Ian. “That’s right, I can’t forget treats for the children.” Ian ran around the kitchen, opening up each and every cabinet and drawer. No candy. “Drat!” Ian shouted again. He ran frantically into the bedroom where Mr. Fluff could hear him throwing things around and searching through boxes. “Yes! I knew we had some candy somewhere! Here’s a bag of candy in a box that we haven’t unpacked yet from when we moved in” Ian yelled with great joy. “Gnnnnow,” Mr. Fluff said, chuckling. Mr. Fluff is excited about the lessons starting back up - after all he believes that he is the teacher that the young students are coming to see.. And why shouldn’t he believe he’s the teacher? He is there to greet each student and sits on the desk or a chair in Ian’s studio while the lesson is going on. He talks (meows) to the students to tell them they are doing a good job with their singing or piano playing. Mr. Fluff is sure that the children are really there to see him - not Ian. The door opened and Elena, a ten year old girl, walked in excitedly. “Mr. Fluff - I’ve missed you so much!” she said as Mr. Fluff walked over to her and brushed by her leg. She bent down to pet him and he gave her hand a quick rub with his head - and then a quick lick (kiss) on her hand as well. “Good to see you again, Elena,” said Ian, “How is school going since I last saw you?” “Good,” said Elena, smiling. “Let’s start the lesson!” The lesson began with something Ian calls ‘warmups.’ This is when Ian and the student make their voices sound funny and not as good as when they are singing a normal song. Elena was getting ready to go on something called an ‘audition’ and Ian was trying very hard to help her sing the song really well. The song she was singing was called, “Let me sing and I’m Happy.” Mr. Fluff really liked the sound of that because he always liked to sing when Elena was singing because it made him feel happy. In fact, when Elena was about half way through the song, Mr. Fluff decided to join in. “Oooooow, gnowwwww” sang Mr. Fluff. “Mr. Fluff’s a good singer, don’t you agree Mr. Ian?,” Elena joked. “He thinks he is,” Ian said, laughing. Fluff.

Book excerpt: From the late Herbert Muschamp, the former architecture critic of The New York Times and one of the most outspoken and influential voices in architectural criticism, a collection of his best work. The pieces here—from The New Republic, Artforum, and The New York Times—reveal how Muschamp’s views were both ahead of their time and timeless. He often wrote about how the right architecture could be inspiring and uplifting, and he uniquely drew on film, literature, and popular culture to write pieces that were passionate and often personal, changing the landscape of architectural criticism in the process. These columns made architecture a subject accessible to everyone at a moment when, because of the heated debate between modernists and postmodernists, architecture had become part of a larger public dialogue. One of the most courageous and engaged voices in his field, he devoted many columns at the Times to the lack of serious new architecture in this country, and particularly in New York, and spoke out against the agenda of developers. He departed from the usual dry, didactic style of much architectural writing to playfully, for example, compare Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Bilbao to the body of Marilyn Monroe or to wax poetic about a new design for Manhattan’s manhole covers. One sees in this collection that Muschamp championed early on the work of Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid, Thom Payne, Frank Israel, Jean Nouvel, and Santiago Calatrava, among others, and was drawn to the theoretical writings of such architects as Peter Eisenman. Published here for the first time is the uncut version of his brilliant and poignant essay about gay culture and Edward Durrell Stone’s museum at 2 Columbus Circle. Fragments from the book he left unfinished, whose title we took for this collection—“A Dozen Years,” “Metroscope,” and “Atomic Secrets”—are also included. Hearts of the City is dazzling writing from a humanistic thinker whose work changed forever the way we think about our cities—and the buildings in them.

Gigantopus from Planet X!: When Sean and Holly must battle a gigantic robot octopus controlled by an evil alien, it sucks big-time. Cosmic Boy Versus Mezmo Head!: After an alien blasts Jeff with an X-ray on his way to audition for his school’s outer space version of The Wizard of Oz, his favorite childhood toy, a Cosmic Boy space helmet, gets stuck on his head. The space invader has his own mind-controlling Mezmo head helmet, and now the two will butt heads . . . or, uh, helmets. Book excerpt: Virgin Territory explores the power of faith and our need to believe in miracles. Sixteen-year-old Dylan Flack is uprooted from his cozy life in New York City by the death of his mother of cancer the night before 9/ll. He finds himself transplanted to Jupiter, Florida, and in the chaos of the move discovers that his father has lost their treasured collection of family photos. Dylan feels that he has begun to lose the memory of his mother's face, and without access to those pictures of their past together, each day stretches darkly into a future without hope. Enter: the Virgin Club, a nomadic group of trailer kids whose mostly single parents drag them all over the country in search of sightings of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although not looking for membership in any club, Dylan falls in love with their leader, Angela, who believes that change occurs in direct proportion to desire and the willingness to take risks. In a series of misadventures and brushes with the law in what Dylan comes to think of as "virgin territory," she teaches Dylan to risk a future without his favorite parent. Miraculously his newfound courage leads to a long overdue confession from his father that brings them closer together and catapults Dylan into a future that holds more promise.

Book excerpt: The Flying Inn is set in a future England where the Temperance movement has allowed a bizarre form of "Progressive" Islam to dominate the political and social life of the country. Because of this, alcohol sales to the poor are effectively prohibited, while the rich can get alcoholic drinks "under a medical certificate". The story relates the adventures of Humphrey Pumph and Captain Patrick Dalroy, who roam the country in their cart with a barrel of rum in an attempt to evade Prohibition, exploiting loopholes in the law to temporarily prevent the police taking action against them. Eventually the heroes and their followers foil an attempted coup by an Islamic military force.
