Book excerpt: With research based on focus group and individual interviews in the United States, as well as a thorough and integrative review of the current literature, Latino Gay Men and HIV discusses the six main sociocultural factors in Latino communities -- machismo, homophobia, family cohesion, sexual silence, poverty and racism--which undermine safe sex practices. In an attempt to explain the alarmingly high incidence of unprotected intercourse in this population, this in-depth cultural and psychological analysis shows how an apparent incongruence between knowledge or intention and behavior can possess its own sociocultural logic and meaning.

Book excerpt: In his provocative and compelling new book, America’s most widely read and most influential commentator casts his gimlet eye on our singular nation. Moving far beyond the strict confines of politics, George F. Will offers a fascinating look at the people, stories, and events–often unheralded–that make the American drama so endlessly entertaining and instructive. With Will’s signature erudition and wry wit always on display, One Man’s America chronicles a spectacular, eclectic procession of figures who have shaped our cultural landscape–from Playboy founder Hugh Hefner to National Review founder William F. Buckley Jr., from Victorian poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, from cotton picker— turned—country singer Buck Owens to actor-turned-president Ronald Reagan. Will crisscrosses the country to illuminate what it is that makes America distinctive. He visits the USS Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor and ponders its enduring links to the present. He travels to Milwaukee to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of an iconic brand, Harley-Davidson. In Los Angeles he finds the inspiring future of education, while in New York he confronts the dispiriting didacticism of the avant-garde. He ventures to the Civil War battlefields of Virginia to explore what we risk when we efface our own history. And on the outskirts of Chicago he investigates one of the darkest chapters in American history, only to discover a shining example of resilience and grace–the best the country has to offer. Will’s wide lens takes in much more as well–everything from the “most emblematic novel of the 1930s” (and no, it is not about the Joads) to the cult of ESPN to Brooks Brothers and Ben & Jerry’s. And of course, One Man’s America would not be complete without the author’s insights on the national pastime, baseball–the icons and the cheats, the hapless and the greats. Finally, in a personal and reflective turn, Will writes movingly of his thirty-five-year-old son Jon, born with Down syndrome, and pays loving and poignant tribute to his mother, who died at the age of ninety-eight after a long struggle with dementia. The essays in One Man’s America, even when critiquing American culture, reflect Will’s deep affection and regard for our nation. After all, he notes, when America falls short, it does so only as compared to “the uniquely high standards it has set for itself.” In the end, this brilliantly informative and entertaining book reminds us of the enduring value of “the simple virtues and decencies that can make communities flourish and that have made America great and exemplary.”

Bernie is a burglar, a good one, effortlessly lifting valuables from the not-so-well-protected abodes of well-to-do New Yorkers like a modern-day Robin Hood. (The poor, as Bernie would be the first to tell you, alas, have nothing worth stealing.) He's not perfect, however; he occasionally makes mistakes. Like accepting a paid assignment from a total stranger to retrieve a particular item from a rich man's apartment. Like still being there when the cops arrive. Like having a freshly slain corpse lying in the next room, and no proof that Bernie isn't the killer. Now he's really got his hands full, having to locate the true perpetrator while somehow eluding the police -- a dirty job indeed, but if Bernie doesn't do it, who will?

Book excerpt: Gene Ramone Brook -- Chaplain Brookie -- ministers to black inmates in the Green Machine, the nickname for the privatized, for-profit prison that relies on a steady stream of black and brown inmates to fill the coffers of its big corporate contractors. It's a place where anguish quickly replaces hope. Chaplain Brookie's ministry aims to tackle the issues the inmates face and prepare them for life beyond the Green Machine. But it's not having the desired impact, so he decides to do something radically different. He pulls together an unlikely team of inmates to carry out his plan -- former businessman Mr. J who has spent twenty-nine years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, bright young rapper Chocolate who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and Vanilla who was falsely framed as a drug kingpin by his wealthy classmates. Chaplain Brookie faces a major challenge when a fellow chaplain tries to sabotage his plan. The complicated, intriguing lives of these colorful characters come together in The Green Machine, a rare glimpse inside prison walls that illuminates the inmates' constant battle against degradation, humiliation, and dehumanization. Combining compassion and a compelling chronicle of prison life, author Daisy M. Jenkins shines a light on the problems and challenges of mass incarceration and the enormous need for rehabilitation. The Green Machine will make you laugh, cry, and think about life -- and those living it -- behind prison walls.

Book excerpt: Take a heartfelt journey with Lorina Simmons, otherwise known as Chocolate, who was raised in one of the roughest housing projects in Queens, New York, and see her life through her words. She bares her struggles and her painful, poverty-stricken life, in which she suffered abandonment and many phases of abuse. After being raised by her grandmother and her drug-addicted mother, she landed in the foster care system. Tossed from ghetto to ghetto, her life became a series of battles, which included promiscuity, petty crimes, drugs, violence, survival, education, and love. Will self-destruction be the outcome for young Chocolate for years to come, especially when she met Maurice Sparks, a handsome red bone with ulterior motives, or will C.J. (Corey Jeppard), another stunning man and veteran be the key to life-altering decisions? Will a world full of deceit and betrayal make or break her? Through turmoil, however, music became her guide and sanctuary, as she continued to survive in the belly of the beast, known as the streets.
