Book excerpt: ABSTRACT Popular lore about Wolfgang Mozart0́9s creative process has promoted the idea that his music was divinely inspired, effortlessly conceived and flawlessly notated. On the contrary, the evidence of his manuscript sources - surviving sketches, fragments and the autograph scores - attests to a compositional method that included distinct notational phases and meticulous revision. Examination of these sources has also led to some changes in our understanding of the chronology of Mozart0́9s music. With the exception of the unfinished Mass in C minor, K. 427, the Requiem and the motet Ave verum corpus, Mozart0́9s liturgical compositions have been traditionally consigned to the Salzburg years; however, supported by more than thirty years of research contributed by Wolfgang Plath, Alan Tyson, Monika Holl and Ulrich Konrad, five isolated mass movement fragments have been situated within the final half-decade of Mozart0́9s life. The existence of these fragments motivates my examination of Mozart0́9s approach to liturgical composition during the Vienna decade, whereby I focus specifically on his revisions to the extant scores in an attempt to reveal the manner in which he sought to refine his musical ideas and meet his aesthetic goals. In order to ensure a relatively homogeneous sample, the pool has been limited to mass movements, complete or fragmentary, dated 1779 or later, scored for chorus and orchestra, and for which the autographs have survived. The fragmentary Kyrie, K. Anh. 12 of early 1779 and Sanctus, K6 296c, placed in 1779/80, both in E-flat major, are included in this examination as a first pillar for study and comparison. The choral movements of the Mass in C minor, K. 427, dated to the early years of Mozart0́9s Vienna decade, represent the second pillar in this study. Finally, the five extant mass movement fragments dated to the last half-decade of Mozart0́9s life stand as a third pillar. Four are incomplete settings of the Kyrie text (K. Anh. 16 in G major, K. Anh 14 in D major, K. Anh. 13 and K. Anh. 15, both in C major); the remaining setting is the Gloria in C major, K. Anh. 20. The study unfolds in four stages. Chapter 1 provides the historical background necessary to an examination of sacred music and its role in Mozart0́9s life during his Vienna decade. Chapters 2 and 3 provide analyses of the musical examples, addressing structural and formal characteristics, as well as examinations of the autograph scores. Chapter 4 isolates the revisions Mozart made to each of the scores and examines them from a number of vantage points: instrumentation, compositional structure and the resultant primary and secondary influences on the musical material. Finally, Chapter 5 offers a summation of the evidence regarding Mozart0́9s notational practices and stylistic ideals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mozart was not only an extraordinary musical genius but a man who lived through the great change from the old society to the modern one in which we still live, when people began to move from accepting the Christian scheme of things to standing alone, from letting themselves be ruled by parents and superiors to rebelling against them. He was himself one of the 'new men' of the age; his music gives voice to anxieties and consolations that are still ours. This book, first published in 1998, sets Mozart's life within the history of an age plunging into revolution and European war. It probes his crucial relationships with his father and his wife but avoids guesswork. It studies - in depth though in non-technical language - characteristic examples of his music and asks what they can tell us about their author and ourselves.

Book excerpt: (Amadeus). Mozart: An Introduction to the Music, the Man, and the Myths explores in detail 20 of the composer's major works in the context of his tragically brief life and the turbulent times in which he lived. Addressed to non-musicians seeking to deepen their technical appreciation for his music while learning more about Mozart the man than the caricature portrayed in the 1986 movie Amadeus , this book offers extensive biographical and historical background debunking many well-established Mozart myths along with guided study of compositions representing every genre of 18th-century music: opera, concerto, symphony, church music, divertimento and serenade, sonata, and string quartet. Author Roye E. Wates, a Mozart specialist, has taught music history to thousands of non-musicians, both undergraduates and adults, as a Professor of Music at Boston University and from 2002-2004 as director of Boston University's Adult Music Seminar at Tanglewood, summer residence of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Mozart: An Introduction to the Music, the Man, and the Myths provides a unique combination of biographical detail, up-to-date research, detailed musical analyses, and clear definitions of terms. Amateurs as well as more advanced musicians will gain a greater understanding of Mozart's encyclopedic mastery.

Book excerpt: This book asks what theological messages theologically educated Catholics in late-eighteenth-century Prague might have perceived in Mozart’s late opera seria La clemenza di Tito. The book’s thesis is two-fold: first, that Catholics might have heard the opera’s advocacy of enlightened absolutism as a celebration of a distinctly Catholic understanding of political governance; and second, that they might have found in the opera a metaphor for the relationship between a gracious God and humanity caught up in sin, expressed as sexual concupiscence, pride, and lust for power. The book develops its interpretation of the opera through narrative character analyses of the main protagonists, an examination of their dramatic development, and by paying attention to the biblical and theological associations they may have evoked in a Catholic audience. The book is geared towards academic readers interested in opera, theologians, historians, and those who work at the intersection of theology and the arts. It contributes to a better understanding of the theological implications of Mozart’s operatic work.

Book excerpt: Intended as a supplement to The Mechanical Muse: The Piano, Pianism and Piano Music, c.1760-1850, this Companion provides additional information which, largely for reasons of space but also of continuity, it was not possible or desirable to include in that volume. The book is laid out alphabetically and full biographical entries are provided for all musical figures mentioned, including composers, performers, theoreticians and teachers, as well as piano makers and publishers of music, within the period covered by The Mechanical Muse. There are also entries on figures of importance from outside the period but whose influence is palpably important within it, such as J.S. Bach. As well as biographical information, all these entries contain lists of principal works and a section on further reading so that readers can follow up people and matters of particular interest. Also included in The Companion are entries devoted to particular works and other information of relevance, such as descriptions of musical forms, characteristics of dances and so on, as well as some technical information on music and explanations of technical terms pertaining to keyboard instruments themselves and to ways of playing them. This Companion is not intended to replace existing reference books such as Grove or Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, but will be useful for those who desire to know more about a particular topic and do not necessarily have access to more specialist reference works, or time to visit large or specialist libraries. As such it is indispensable to users of The Mechanical Muse.

Book excerpt: "'When was the score of the Requiem completed?' is a question that everyone has asked; . . .but Wolff goes on to ask: 'Where do the technical and stylistic premises for the Requiem lie, and to what extent could these be taken into account after Mozart's death?' This question is rich in implications, central to the uniqueness of the work, and virtually undiscussed in the Mozart literature."—Thomas Bauman, co-author of Mozart's Operas
