The third edition adds nearly 600 new entries to cover new research since publication of the previous edition in 2002. Most of the literature is books, articles in journals and magazines, dissertations and theses, and essays or chapters in Festschriften, treatises, and biographies. In addition to the core literature obscure citations are also included when they are the only studies in a particular field. In addition to being printed, this volume is also for the first time available online. The online environment allows for information to be updated as new research is introduced. This database of information is a "live" resource, fully searchable, and with active links. Book excerpt: This collection of articles dedicated to the memory of Lenore Coral divides into three sections that focus on her scholarly interests: music of the eighteenth century, music libraries and collections, and new approaches to the musical canon. Many of the seventeen contributions included in the volume are the result of the individual author's connection with Lenore, or were projects that she had been directly involved with, either as dissertation advisor, committee member, or interested observer. The senior scholars and music librarians represented here are testament to the impact of her intellect and influence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second half of the eighteenth century witnessed a flourishing of the string quartet, often represented as a smooth and logical progression from first violin-dominated homophony to a more equal conversation between the four voices. Yet this progression was neither as smooth nor as linear as previously thought, as Mara Parker illustrates in her examination of the string quartet during this period. Looking at a wide variety of string quartets by composers such as Pleyel, Distler and Filtz, in addition to Haydn and Mozart, the book proposes a new way of describing the relationships between the four instruments in different works. Broadly speaking, these relationships follow one of four patterns: the 'lecture', the 'polite conversation', the 'debate', and the 'conversation'. In focusing on these musical discourses, it becomes apparent that each work is the product of its composer's stylistic choices, location, intended performers and intended audience. Instead of evolving in a strict and universal sequence, the string quartet in the latter half of the eighteenth century was a complex genre with composers mixing and matching musical discourses as circumstances and their own creative impulses required.

Book excerpt: A study of stylistic re-invention, a practically - and empirically-based theory that explains how innovative, putatively inspired ideas take shape in Mozart's works and lead to stylistic re-formulation. From close examination of a variety of works, this work shows that stylistic re-invention is a consistent manifestation of stylistic development.

Book excerpt: German and English: Academic Usage and Academic Translation focuses on academic and popular scientific/academic usage. This book’s brief is both theoretical and practical: on the theoretical side, it aims to provide a systematic, corpus-based account of current academic usage in English and in German as well as of the translation problems associated with various academic genres; on the practical side, it seeks to equip academic translators with the skills required to produce target-language text in accordance with disciplinary conventions. The main perspective taken is that of a translator working from German into English, but the converse direction is also regularly taken into account. Most of the examples used are based on errors that occurred in real-life translation jobs. Additional practice materials and sample translations are available as eResources here: www.routledge.com/9780367619022. This book will be an important resource for professionals aspiring to translate academic texts, linguists interested in academic usage, translation scholars, and graduate and post-graduate students.

Book excerpt: Beethoven's string quartets form one of the most intimate and revealing sections of his output, giving a full and varied picture of his musical personality. This study of the quartets by Philip Radcliffe, first published by Hutchinson University in 1965, was reissued by Cambridge University Press in 1978. Each work is examined in detail describing the development of Beethoven's style - a method that highlights the very strong individuality that remained unimpaired throughout the composition of these quartets. They are compared with Beethoven's other music and with the string quartets of composers before and since. This is a book which has proved itself to be of continuing value to the student of music at school and university level and to the general reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: String Quartets in Beethoven’s Europe is the first detailed study of string quartets in late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century Europe. It brings together the work of nine scholars who explore little-studied aspects of this multi-faceted genre. Together, this book’s chapters deal with compositional responses to Beethoven’s string quartets and the prestige of the genre; varied compositional practices in string quartet writing, with a particular emphasis on texture and performance elements; and the reception of Beethoven’s string quartets ca. 1800. They include discussions of quartets composed for the amateur and connoisseur markets in Beethoven’s Europe; virtuosity, the French Violin School, and the quatuor brillant; the relationship between quartet composers and their audiences during Beethoven’s era; and the cross-pollination of quartet styles in Europe’s musical centers such as Vienna, Paris, and St. Petersburg.
