Book Synopsis Competitive Advantage by : Michael E. Porter
Download or read book Competitive Advantage written by Michael E. Porter and published by Free Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now beyond its eleventh printing and translated into twelve languages, Michael Porter’s The Competitive Advantage of Nations has changed completely our conception of how prosperity is created and sustained in the modern global economy. Porter’s groundbreaking study of international competitiveness has shaped national policy in countries around the world. It has also transformed thinking and action in states, cities, companies, and even entire regions such as Central America. Based on research in ten leading trading nations, The Competitive Advantage of Nations offers the first theory of competitiveness based on the causes of the productivity with which companies compete. Porter shows how traditional comparative advantages such as natural resources and pools of labor have been superseded as sources of prosperity, and how broad macroeconomic accounts of competitiveness are insufficient. The book introduces Porter’s “diamond,” a whole new way to understand the competitive position of a nation (or other locations) in global competition that is now an integral part of international business thinking. Porter's concept of “clusters,” or groups of interconnected firms, suppliers, related industries, and institutions that arise in particular locations, has become a new way for companies and governments to think about economies, assess the competitive advantage of locations, and set public policy. Even before publication of the book, Porter’s theory had guided national reassessments in New Zealand and elsewhere. His ideas and personal involvement have shaped strategy in countries as diverse as the Netherlands, Portugal, Taiwan, Costa Rica, and India, and regions such as Massachusetts, California, and the Basque country. Hundreds of cluster initiatives have flourished throughout the world. In an era of intensifying global competition, this pathbreaking book on the new wealth of nations has become the standard by which all future work must be measured.
Book Synopsis Moving Up the Value Chain. How to make the Smiling Curve smile? by : Saif Islam
Download or read book Moving Up the Value Chain. How to make the Smiling Curve smile? written by Saif Islam and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: Pass with highest distinction, , course: International Business - International Business and Value Creation, language: English, abstract: The concept of Smiling Curve coined by Stan Shih, founder of Acer, shows the appropriable value added in different phases of an industry. Typically the part of a value chain that generates higher value proposition are controlled by firms from developed economies; while firms from developing world are 'stuck' at the manufacturing section with low value added. However, the unprecedented growth of ICT hardware market over the years has opened up possibilities for those latecomers to catch up. Although a handful firms have succeeded, little is known about how they managed to move up along the value chain. Trying to solve this mystery, a conceptual model is proposed based on case studies of ICT firms from an emerging economy, Taiwan. Knowing the difficulties for firms to survive head-to-head competitions that come along with the moving up activities, the model suggests that firms should look for new market opportunities by the means of functional upgrading and innovation, and eventually evolve into creating a new value chain with high end topped by themselves.

Book Synopsis Moving Up the Value Chain in Manufacturing for China by : Miaojie Yu
Download or read book Moving Up the Value Chain in Manufacturing for China written by Miaojie Yu and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing upgrading of value chain in China's manufacturing leads China toward a middle-income country. The paper first examines the performance and technological upgrading between and within China's manufacturing since 1978. By using the highly disaggregated trade data and Chinese firm-level production data, I find that, with the increasing level of export sophistication and a deeper global vertical integration, Chinese manufacturing firms experience a fast growth of productivity in the new century. In addition to trade, FDI and outsourcing, industrial policies for processing trade and innovation are also the fundamental driving forces to drive China's upgrading of its value chain. My analysis suggests that China should insist on its trade-oriented development strategy to avoid the possible upper-middle income-country trap in the near future.

Book Synopsis Global Value Chains: What are the Benefits and Why Do Countries Participate? by : Ms.Faezeh Raei
Download or read book Global Value Chains: What are the Benefits and Why Do Countries Participate? written by Ms.Faezeh Raei and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, world trade and production have become increasingly organized around global value chains (GVC). Recent theoretical work has shown that countries can benefit from participation in GVCs through multiple channels. However, little is known empirically about the economic importance of supply chains. We use the Eora MRIO database to compute different measures of GVC participation for 189 countries and illustrate global patterns of supply chains as well as their evolution over time in order to contribute to this topic. We find that GVC-related trade, rather than conventional trade, has a positive impact on income per capita and productivity, however there is large heterogeneity and the gains appear more signifcant for upper-middle and high-income countries. We document that “moving up” to more high-tech sectors while participating in major supply chains does take place but is not universal, suggesting other factors matter. We confirm the findings of the standard gravity literature for GVC trade; highlighting the key role of institutional features such as contract enforcement and the quality of infrastructure as determinants of GVC participation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization, developments in technology, and new business models are transforming the way products and services are conceived, designed, made, and distributed in the U.S. and around the world. These forces present challenges - lower wages and fewer jobs for a growing fraction of middle-class workers - as well as opportunities for "makers" and aspiring entrepreneurs to create entirely new types of businesses and jobs. Making Value for America examines these challenges and opportunities and offers recommendations for collaborative actions between government, industry, and education institutions to help ensure that the U.S. thrives amid global economic changes and remains a leading environment for innovation. Filled with real-life examples, Making Value for America presents a roadmap to enhance the nation's capacity to pursue opportunities and adapt to transforming value chains by widespread adoption of best practices, a well-prepared and innovative workforce, local innovation networks to support startups and new products, improved flow of capital investments, and infrastructure upgrades.
