Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, University of Southern Denmark (University of Southern Denmark), language: English, abstract: This thesis analyzes and evaluates current macro-environmental trends in the German automotive industry and their evolutionary impact on automotive business models and competitiveness of traditional German car manufacturers. To enhance the understanding of industry evolution and strategic change, the German automotive business is explored through the lens of market innovations. Drawing upon the industry evolution model of Henderson and Clark (1990), the impact of automotive market innovations on strategies of German OEMs with regard to inter-firm collaborations are classified and analyzed. For evaluation of motives and strategic fit in cross-industry collaborations, sources and key success factors of inter-firm competitive advantages are elaborated. Synthesizing and refining among others the theories of Barney (2007), Dyer & Singh (1999), and Williamson (1993), new resources as derived from inter-organizational relationships are depicted in terms of competitiveness and their relations to German car manufacturers are discussed. Identifying the red oceans and the blue oceans in the German automotive industry according to the business model theory of Kim and Mauborgne (2005), four scenarios for the strategic realignment of German OEMs in response to industry dynamics are formulated. Within this scope, modifications of business model elements are elaborated according to the strategy canvas of Osterwalder et al. (2005) and revisions of existing automotive business models are proposed. Having studied the business model concept as a possible integrator of traditional strategic perspectives on industry evolution and firm performance, the thesis concludes with the insight that in order to capitalize on the emerging automotive trends, German OEMs need to intensify qualitative partnerships as a new source of sustained competitive advantage. Advanced cross-industry collaborations opening up new business opportunities must be addressed by shift of corporate strategy and redefinition of business models for better realignment of firm resources to current industry-transforming parameters thus ensuring long-term profitable growth in an increasingly connected environment.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject Engineering - Industrial Engineering and Management, grade: 2,0, Stellenbosch Universitiy, course: Operations Management, 78 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The research report takes an in-depth look at the automotive industry and their major participants in the upstream value chain. The different parties involved are the automotive manufacturers (OEMs) and their suppliers. The overall goal of the following report is to identify suitable business models for small to medium sized (SME) automotive suppliers. As the automotive value chain currently undergoes an evolutionary change towards a diminishing vertical integration of the OEMs, it becomes a challenging issue to reconfigure the responsibilities of the suppliers. Thereby OEMs and their suppliers have to cope with a shift from a functional to a process orientated value chain. During this reorganization of the OEM-supplier interface, enterprises realign their strategic intent towards their core competencies as well. Besides the shifting value chain, both suppliers and OEMs have to cope with a consolidation in their industries. This consolidation is impacted by stagnating traditional markets, an ongoing globalization of the value chain, and an increasing productivity pressure in the automotive industry. Looking at the automotive supplier, it becomes obvious that the suppliers are on the one hand challenged by productivity pressures and on the other hand have the opportunity to take over more business of the automotive value chain. The growth potential requires changes in the area of supply chain management and new types of collaboration in the supply network. This prospective development is mainly influenced by a trend towards the outsourcing of entire processes by the OEMs and the increasing need for future innovations in the automotive industry. After discussing the above mentioned issues, the report analyses the role of suppliers with respect to their main customers, the automotive OEMs. Based on the findings business models for suppliers are assessed and key success factors for small to medium sized suppliers are proposed and evaluated. The findings of the evaluation are translated into suggestions for most suitable business models of SMEs. The report concludes with recommendations for the strategy building process indicates problems concerning the shifting value chain, and points out the importance of further research in the field of the small to medium sized automotive supplier industry. First by the United States, through the development of ‘mass production’ pioneered by Henry Ford and more recently by ‘lean production techniques’ as practised by the leading Japanese producers, particularly Toyota. It has consistently risen to these challenges and has shown it can compete and even outperform its competitors with world-class products. However, the European - dustry is now faced with growing competition and growth from new emerging low-cost countries and needs to re-define its competitive advantage to remain at the forefront of the sector. Automotive growth is driven by two factors, new m- kets and new technologies. Global competition is increasing, with technology and product differentiation becoming the most important sales factors, but with c- tinued cost pressure. Within the market the winners will be more profitable and the losers will disappear. The Automotive Industry makes a significant contribution to the socio-economic fabric of the European Union. Manufacturing output represents €700 billion and research and development spending €24 billion. European automotive suppliers number 5000 member companies and represent 5 million employees and generate €500 billion in revenues. These are significant figures that generate wealth and high value employment within the EU. European firms must consistently improve their competitive position to ensure that the industry does not migrate to growing new markets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The automotive industry is still one of the world's largest manufacturing sectors, but it suffers from being very technology-focused as well as being relatively short-term focused. There is little emphasis within the industry and its consultancy and analyst supply network on the broader social and economic impacts of automobility and of the sector that provides it. The Global Automotive Industry addresses this need and is a first port of call for any academic, official or consultant wanting an overview of the state of the industry. An international team of specialist researchers, both from academia and business, review and analyse the key issues that make vehicle manufacturing still the world’s premier manufacturing sector, closely tied in with the fortunes of both established and newly emerging economies. In doing so, it covers issues related to manufacturing, both established practices as well as new developments; issues relating to distribution, marketing and retail, vehicle technologies and regulatory trends; and, crucially, labour practices and the people who build cars. In all this it explains both how the current situation arose and also likely future trajectories both in terms of social and regulatory trends, as the technological, marketing and labour practice responses to those, leading in many cases to the development of new business models. Key features Provides a global overview of the automotive industry, covering its current state and considering future challenges Contains contributions from international specialists in the automotive sector Presents current research and sets this in an historical and broader industry context Covers threats to the industry, including globalization, economic and environmental sustainability The Global Automotive Industry is a must-have reference for researchers and practitioners in the automotive industry and is an excellent source of information for business schools, governments, and graduate and undergraduate students in automotive engineering.

This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current business model of the automotive industry is based on individual car ownership, yet new ridesharing companies such as Uber and Lyft are well capitalized to invest in large, commercially operated, on-demand mobility service vehicle fleets. Car manufacturers like Tesla want to incorporate personal car owners into part-time fleet operation by utilizing the company's fleet service. These robotaxi fleets can be operated profitably when the technology works in a reliable manner and regulators allow driverless operation. Although Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) models of private and commercial vehicle fleets can complement public transportation models, they may contribute to lower public transportation ridership and thus higher subsidies per ride. This can lead to inefficiencies in the utilization of existing public transportation infrastructure. MaaS platforms can also cause a reduced reliance on parking infrastructure (e.g., street parking lanes and parking garages) which can contribute to an improvement in overall traffic flow, and a reduction in capital investment for commercial and residential real-estate development. Urban planning can be better centered around the true mobility needs of the citizens without sacrificing valuable space for vehicles that are inactive most of the time. A key challenge is the transition phase where traditional forms of car ownership and transportation coexist with new forms of mobility services (before true MaaS platforms are fully optimized). Another fundamental issue is determining the true cost of car ownership and establishing ideal cost structures for on-demand mobility services in order to replace the need of owning a car. This needs to occur without compromising subsidized public transportation which provides affordable transportation for low-income groups. NOTE: SAE EDGE(TM) Research Reports are intended to identify and illuminate key issues in emerging, but still unsettled, technologies of interest to the mobility industry. The goal of SAE EDGE(TM) Research Reports is to stimulate discussion and work in the hope of promoting and speeding resolution of identified issues. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many parts of the world, there is a crisis of mobility. The choices we have made over the past 200 years on modes and technologies of transport have brought us unprecedented global interaction and in many respects increased personal freedom. However, all this mobility has come at a cost to society, to the economy and to the environment. Mobility is in crisis, but few seem aware of the full extent of it. Though most people will be aware of congestion, accidents (although this aspect is often overlooked), parking restrictions or fuel prices, few will have considered the effects of the dramatic increase in mobility expected in China, India and elsewhere. Nor do many people in their daily lives consider the impact of climate change on our environment and the contribution our cars make to it. It is often thought that technology alone can solve this problem. For some observers, salvation could be achieved by means of hydrogen fuel cells, by hybrid cars, or by increased fuel efficiency, or even by telematics to reduce congestion. This book shows that 'technology' may well not be enough in itself and that for a genuinely sustainable transport future far more radical change - affecting many aspects of society - is needed. It is likely, for example, that new business models are needed, as well as users and consumers adopting new forms of behavior. Disruptive technological innovation may well contribute, but needs to be induced by a combination of market forces and government regulation. Many studies touch on transport and mobility issues and more mainstream books aimed at challenging the dominance of automobility are common, yet works dealing with the longer-term strategic, theoretical and broader conceptual issues needed to inform the move towards more sustainable transport are rare. Yet policy-makers, practitioners, as well as many sections of academia, acknowledge a need for guidance on new thinking on sustainable mobility. This book brings together a range of views representing both leading-edge thinking and best practice in the mobility sector. The individual expert contributions form the basis for framing a broader vision of future mobility and proposed transition trajectories towards that future. Much of the effort reflected in the chapters in this book is concerned with going beyond the "technofix" of new cars, to confront the more difficult challenges of institutional, cultural and social change within and beyond the industry that have to be resolved in the transition towards sustainability. It therefore seeks to break through the conventional boundary between engineering and the social sciences, and the contributors come from both sides of this traditional but unnecessary divide, combining economists, engineers, geographers, designers and others. The work is based on the sustainable mobility stream in the 2003 International Greening of Industry Network conference in San Francisco. This event brought together experts from industry and government, and the book combines some of the papers presented there, developed and updated into full chapters, with a number of additional chapters to capture some of the themes that emerged from the conference. The central problem addressed in this book is the private car: how to power it, how to build it and how to deliver it to customers in a more sustainable future. It starts with ideas of radical innovation in the propulsion system of the car, notably the hydrogen fuel cell. In one section, the book examines business models that could be used to deliver automobility in a more sustainable manner. This section looks at how the car is made and used, and looks beyond it by examining how we could change those aspects in our quest for sustainable mobility. The book then considers a number of recently introduced vehicles and alternative vehicle concepts within the context of a dominant existing paradigm. These vary from a minimalist single-seat commute

Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: 1,0, Munich University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: Volkswagen Group is based in Wolfsburg, Germany, ranks among the world’s leading automobile manufacturer and is the largest carmaker in Europe. Therefore the Group posses 11.3 percent share of the world passenger car market and holds 20.9 percent of the European automobile market. The Volkswagen Group with its nine brands (Audi, SEAT, Škoda, Volkswagen, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini and Scania) offers a broad product range from low-consumption small cars to luxury class vehicles. For simplicity reasons the Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft (as parent company of the Volkswagen group) is referred to as Volkswagen or VW where as the whole Volkswagen Group is either referred to as Volkswagen (VW) Group or Group within this paper. Despite the Group’s international alignment it is currently only slightly represented in India. As it has entered the Indian passenger car market ten years ago, significantly later than its Japanese and American competitors, its current market share amounts only to two percent. Because potential customers are increasing, the automotive industry is getting more dynamical and international and government’s politics are focusing on economic growth, India could become the future key market to the automotive industry. Due to the eminently strong growth of the Indian main street and the proceeding social change, as the younger generation wants to go for a distinguished career, especially the Indian minicar market’s (IMM) potential is higher than ever before. As Volkswagen Group is alive to the importance of this market but lacking in appropriate knowledge how to produce cheapest cars in large-scale production, it considers strengthening the cooperation with Suzuki Motor Corporation and Volkswagen by building a Joint Venture (JV). Thus, the already existing cross share- holding as shown in Appendix A could evolve into a new common entity. This paper analyses, appraises and evaluates in what way this strategy is promising for Volkswagen and how far Suzuki is an appropriate partner. Therefore, this assignment contributes to the assessment of the strategy’s prospect of success. Therefore, Appendix B was used partly as framework in this paper. Firstly, Volkswagen Group’s vision and history is epitomised and its objectives are outlined. Secondly, chosen resources of Volkswagen are revealed (2) and it is analysed how far they are transferable to the mentioned market and to which extent the JV with Suzuki Motor ...

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2,0, University of Applied Sciences Essen, language: English, abstract: Car sharing in 2021 is no longer a new invention, but rather part of the social shift toward a sustainable world. It is the breaking down of old values of owning a car as a status symbol. Thus, car sharing (CS) has its origins in 1997, when the cooperatives ATG AutoTeilet Genossenschaft and ShareCom merged to form the swiss Mobility Genossenschaft, bringing together the first thoughts on car sharing. The intention was to make it possible for all people to use a car, especially those who cannot bear the high costs of purchasing and maintaining one. Now, a lot has happened in the project for over 20 years, with the last 10 years in particular bringing a great surge in development. Digitization and the progress of technologies have managed to generate a wide reach and market the sharing model as a worthwhile business model. Worthwhile for companies and users alike, who can now reserve and use a car close to them with little money and pay for it for a leisure trip, a trip to the supermarket or a commute to work only as long as it is in use. The automotive industry, meanwhile, is delighted about the growing middle class, which nowadays can afford its own car without major restrictions and also wants to. Cars mean the greatest possible mobility, freedom for people. Although this is a basic human need, awareness of sustainability and climate protection has increased. As a result, the automotive industry is currently under unprecedented pressure to transform its technologies to electric drives and to decide on its own market position in a future-oriented manner, to be a mobility service provider or a pure vehicle manufacturer. At the present time, CS is largely offered by companies that mediate supply and demand and thus connect users with automobiles. BMW and Daimler, which have be

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,3, Berlin School of Economics and Law (IMB), language: English, abstract: This paper investigates Chinese automotive companies’ internationalisation activities into the European market. They are still short on experience and young in history. Since the Chinese economy has only gradually liberalised after 1978, the industry has been highly influenced by joint venture activities with foreign automobile companies in China.12 years ago, Chinese automotive companies started to internationalise. Dunning’s eclectic paradigm is utilized as academic foundation and related motives and entry modes are aligned to current Chinese activities. In early attempts to enter Europe there was a predominant resource-seeking motive, while later market-seeking reasons became more obvious and have dominated the activities since. So far, ownership-specific advantages do not play a major role in terms of valuable intangible assets like patents, whereas location specific determinants are significant, especially in terms of governmental impact. Additional home market advantages in labour endowment, resources, legal environment and strong finan- cial resources give Chinese automakers an edge and prepare them to further internationalise. However, regarding all OLI forces, there are still no outweighing advantages over European competitors. The interviewed experts do not expect a noticeable market entry with significant sales volume within the next ten years. To date, Chinese exports and FDI in Europe are the most relevant modes even though visibility is marginal. According to industry experts, companies like Qoros, BYD and Geely are possible candidates to succeed on the European market in the future. Other brands, which failed to enter Europe, e.g. due to lacking safety standards, are yet still opinion-forming. It is concluded, that if China’s automotive industry consolidates and advances technologically, it will be prepared to successfully compete on global markets, in particular Europe. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, Post University, course: Competitive Intelligence, language: English, abstract: The overall electric vehicle industry has grown significantly in the last five years. One of many reasons for that was the introduction of Teslas first electric vehicle in 2009 with a strong differentiation strategy. Tesla is now focused on its entry into the mass automotive market. To achieve that, the company is committed to invest heavily in its production capacity and model line-up, most recently with the introduction of Model 3. Tesla's competitive advantages for this strategic goal include a superior electric vehicle technology and recharging infrastructure, brand recognition, a first mover market position, and a strong network of strategic partnerships. However, since the company entered the industry in the premium sport and luxury sedan vehicle niche segment, it has a resource disadvantage in regards to know-how, large-scale manufacturing processes and model line-up when it comes to the mass automotive market. Additionally, the company is relying on an overall growth of the EV demand, technological improvements and a high number of customer referrals in the near future. There is a large number of existing premium manufacturers in this space, several of which already enjoy major manufacturing and economies of scale advantages that will make this endeavor highly costly and risky. However, the combination of Tesla's competitive advantages and aggressive marketing could result in the capture and sustainment of a significant percentage of market shares in the mass automotive segment.
