Book excerpt: This little volume comes as the successor to 'Mount Vernon, Arlington, and Woodlawn, ' and it is the result of years of careful research. When we awoke to the fact that much which had been written of these places and personages was purely fiction, that generally accepted statements hoary with time were utterly without foundation, we resolved to turn from the beaten path of one writer following another like sheep over a fence and to seek new avenues for the truth about the makers of this history in the dawn of our Republic. So we delved into records evidently unexplored by writers; drew on family archives heretofore untouched; visited cemeteries for epitaph dates; investigated land grants, old wills; called Washington's diaries into play for vertification of many a disputed point; and thus set aside long-cherished stories. Now we believe that we are presenting the most accurate and authentic account of these shrines and their builders that has yet been given to the world--that it is possible to give at this late day when record proof is still wanting to verify conflictiing statements. No perfect historian has yet been found. -- Prelude.

Book excerpt: The Mount Vernon community in Fairfax County, Virginia, draws its name from George Washington's home overlooking the Potomac River. Washington acquired the house and plantation in 1754 and lived there in peace and war until his 1799 death. Since then, however, the area's 340-year history has gained breadth and texture beyond Washington's personal heritage. In the 1840s and 1850s, forty Quaker families moved to Mount Vernon and revitalized area agriculture and commerce. The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association bought the mansion and 200 acres from Washington's great-grandnephew in 1858 and continues to preserve the historic landmark to this day. The development of Route 1 and the George Washington Memorial Parkway in the 20th century contributed to today's economic development and growth in the Mount Vernon area. Neighborhoods and sites along the Potomac River are rife with history, including landmarks like the Woodlawn Plantation, Gum Springs, Pohick Church, Fort Belvoir, and Gunston Hall.

Book excerpt: lmages of America: Mount Vernon takes a visual excursion through the history of the home and neighborhood of our first president of the United States, George Washington. Washington's ancestors came to Northern Virginia over 320 years ago, and by 1786, he had acquired an 8,000-plus-acre tract of land surrounding Mount Vernon. Washington divided this acreage into five farms, which were considered his pride and joy. His detailed management of agricultural affairs, as well as his flair for entertaining, left a visual impression on all that visited. The region, from the late 17th century to Washington's death in 1799, continued to thrive. The estate has withstood and prospered during the selling of Mount Vernon and the surrounding properties, the establishment of the Quaker community in the 1840s, the Civil War, the arrival of the Army Corps of Engineers in 1915, and over 200 years of tourism. Through this volume, containing over 200 images of Mount Vernon and the surrounding vicinity, readers will experience the area's rich history.

Excerpt: Abingdon (also known as the Alexander-Custis Plantation) was an 18th- and 19th-century plantation that the prominent Alexander, Custis, Stuart, and Hunter families owned. The plantation's site is now located in Arlington County in the U.S. state of Virginia. Abingdon is known as the birthplace of Eleanor "Nelly" Parke Custis Lewis (March 31, 1779 - July 15, 1852), a granddaughter of Martha Washington and a step-granddaughter of United States President George Washington. Abingdon may also have been home to the progenitor of all weeping willows (Salix babylonica) in the United States. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, which occupies part of Abingdon's grounds, contains indoor and outdoor displays that commemorate the plantation's history. The land on which Abingdon was built, known as Gravelly Point, was originally part of a larger holding granted in 1669 by letters patent to a shipmaster, Robert Howson, for headrights for settlers that he had brought to the Colony of Virginia. Howson soon sold the patent to a sea captain and surveyor, John Alexander, for 6,000 pounds of tobacco. Alexander was descended from the MacDonald clan of Scotland and was a son of the Earl of Stirling. He immigrated to Virginia in 1659 and settled in Stafford County. When Alexander purchased the Howson patent, the patent covered an 8,000-acre (3,200 ha) site (believed at the time of sale to contain only 6,000 acres...
