Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mount Rainier and Its Glaciers As for the plea that these glaciers lie in a scarcely opened, out-of the-way region, a forbidding wilderness as compared with maturely civilized Switzerland, it no longer has the force it once possessed. Rainier's ice fields can now be reached from Seattle or Tacoma, the two principal cities of western Washington, In a comfortable day's journeying, either by rail or by automobile. The cooling sight of crevassed glaciers and the exhilarating flower-scented air of alpine meadows need no longer be exclusive pleasures, to be gained only by a trip abroad. Book Synopsis Surficial Geology of Mount Rainier National Park, Washington (Classic Reprint) by : Dwight R. Crandell
Download or read book Surficial Geology of Mount Rainier National Park, Washington (Classic Reprint) written by Dwight R. Crandell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surficial Geology of Mount Rainier National Park, Washington Much of the ground surface around Mount Rainier vol cano is directly underlain by loose geologic deposits that veneer the hard rock formations. Examples of these deposits are sand and gravel bars along the rivers, ridges of loose rock debris beside the glaciers, and sloping aprons of rock fragments beneath almost every cliff. Even though they are generally thin and inconspicuous when compared with the rock formations, these surficial deposits are clues to geologic events that have profoundly influenced the shape of the park's landscape. Thus, from the character and extent of glacial deposits one can judge the age and size of former glaciers that carved the cirques and deep canyons of the park; from the mudflows which streamed down nearly every valley one can infer the age and size of huge landslides of the past that helped determine Mount Rainier's present shape; and from the pumice deposits some of the volcano's recent eruptive activity can be reconstructed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mount Rainier, a Record of Exploration" by Various is a challenging and fascinating collection of excerpts from the original accounts of the men who successfully found, explored, and first climbed this sky-shouldering Cascade Range mountain. During the summer of 1915, the mountain was for the first time encircled by a large company of travelers. Small parties, carrying their luggage and provisions on their backs, had made the trip a number of times. The Mountaineers Club, in 1915, conducted a party of one hundred, with a fully equipped pack train and commissary, around the mountain. They camped each evening at or near the snowline. At the daily campfires, extracts were read from the original sources of the mountain's history. The interest there manifested in such records gave an additional impulse to the preparation of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Many-Storied Mountains: The Life of Glacier National Park In Glacier National Park the land is folded up. On the east, Chief Mountain, Curly Bear, and Rising Wolf break the prairie's hold. When the early French fur trappers saw these peaks glistening in the distance with summer-long snows and perpetual ice, they named this region the land of shining mountains. But for all the ice and snow that reflect the summer sun, the park's pres ent glaciers are but snowflakes compared to the mighty rivers of ice that carved this land. Glaciation, the magnificent sculptor, left its bold signature everywhere, and this park honors with its name the force that shaped it.
