Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mount Calvary: Or the History of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection, of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Written in Cornish (as It May Be Conjectured) Some Centuries Past No one more sincerely rejoices, than does the Editor of this ancient mystery, that the Cornish dialect of the Celtic or Gaelic language has ceased altogether from being used by the inhabitants of Cornwall; whatever may have been its degree of intrinsic excellence: experience amply demonstrating, that no infliction on a province is equally severe, or irremediable, as the separation by distinct speech from a great and enlightened Nation, of which it forms a part. A separation closing against it most of the avenues to knowledge, and wholly intercepting that course of rapid improvement which eminently distinguishes the present age from all other periods in the history of man. But with respect to Etymological and Antiquarian researches, the circumstances are widely different; and it is with the hope of affording some assistance towards such inquiries, that the Cornish mystery, accompanied by a verbal translation, has been transcribed from a manuscript in the Bodleian Library, and is now laid before the public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragedy of Calvary: Or the Minute Details of Christ's Life From Palm Sunday Morning Till the Resurrection and Ascension Taken Prophecy, History, Revelations and Ancient Writings The sufferings and death of Christ transcend all events of human history. The Tragedy of Calvary has reformed the world. The god-man's blood changed mankind in the past, still works its miracles in men's hearts, and will continue its wonders till it draws all eyes to that Victim hanging as the Standard of the Nations. With rapid pens, and Simplest style, Gospel writers tell the story without going into details. But we would like to know the most minute events which happened when he died. But his history was written before he came. In the Old Testament, he rises from almost every page. He is found in names of men and places, in Temple cere monies, ih feasts of Israel, and in Hebrew customs while Patriarch, Prophet, Seer, Sage and King foretold his kingdom, his coming, his life, his sufferings, his death, resurrection and ascension, but in such a way that no one studying him before his birth, could have told to whom these wonderful prophecies pointed, for if they knew they would not have put their Messiah to death. In the Gospels, in histories of the time when he walked the earth, in writings of the early Church, and among the Orientals, we find a wealth of details relating to Him. But never before were all these completely given in one work. TO combine all known about Christ in one complete story, we read the Lives of Christ in different languages, Jewish literature, histories of his time, revelations of the Saints, prophets of Jew and Gentile, searched the great libraries of this country, British and Vatican Museums, and visited the Holy Land, seeking information of the Victim of the world's sins. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘We did not know; nobody has ever told us that!’ These were the words, spoken in tears, of Pope Pius XII on first reading passages from A Doctor at Calvary, Dr. Pierre Barbet’s scientific and reverent study of the Crucifixion of Christ. From an examination of the Holy Shroud of Turin—the authenticity of which Dr. Barbet accepts from medical evidence—a remarkable reconstruction of Christ’s terrible agony is presented in language that cannot fail to move the heart. What kind and what degree of physical torture did Our Lord suffer on Calvary? What was the medical cause of His death? These are among the questions answered in A Doctor at Calvary, one of the most significant contributions to Christological science in modern times. Christ’s preliminary sufferings—the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, the scourging, the carrying of the cross—the wounds of the hands, in the feet, in the heart, the causes of the rapid death, and the entombment are recounted with the devotion and compassion of an ardent Christian and with a brilliant doctor’s accuracy of anatomical detail. ‘Without doubt this is one of the most gripping and moving books to have been published in many a year.’—Harold C. Gardiner, S. J. ‘As an aid to vivid viewing of the Passion, this book is peerless.’—Rev. John S. Kennedy, Balancing the Books ‘...a profoundly moving study of the Passion.’—Commonwealth ‘...a remarkable reconstruction of Christ’s agony and death.’—Jubilee ‘This volume is an outstanding example of how science can contribute not only to theology, but to solid Christian piety, and thus be an aid to love of Christ.’—The Voice ‘This is a gripping and powerful book of the highest stature.’—Voice of St. Jude ‘Sincere study of this book will enable us for the first time to understand what is behind the words: ‘Jesus suffered and died for us.”—America

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archbishop Alban Goodier, S.J. fills in the many blanks in the historical narratives about the Passion of Jesus Christ with a riveting account based on history, culture and his own deep spiritual insights. He brings to life and unifies the many observations, emotions and subtle and not-so-subtle actions that revolve around the person of God the Son as he faces his most tragic and triumphant moment. The author’s unique approach intersperses Scripture accounts with the commentary of an incisive narrator who sifts and judges from the span of hundreds of years. He draws from the obvious as well as the obscure, and finds supernatural meaning in the most mundane actions that surround the suffering Christ. In the hands of this writer, the Lord’s few words, accompanied by the author’s commentary, challenge contemporary believers as much as they did those who first followed in the footsteps of Christ and his apostles. The author was born in 1869 in Lancashire, northern England and educated at the prominent Catholic college, Stonyhurst, which has been the source of many English Catholic politicians, intellectuals and business people. After a degree from the University of London, he was ordained a Jesuit in 1903. He served as archbishop of Bombay from 1919 to 1926 and returned to England to write and serve as a chaplain until his death in 1939.
