Book excerpt: The research seeks to determine which motivational factors influence international student athletes in committing to an American institution in order to participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The study will examine which factors play an important role in college choice for these individuals. Most research indicates that the primary motivation for international student-athletes to come to American colleges is to receive an education while being on athletic scholarships (Bale, 1991, Ridinger, 1996; Stidwell, 1984). The research will serve to support previous findings and to reveal other motivational factors which influence college choice for international student-athletes. By exploratory factor analysis the major influences which play a role in the student-athlete's decision to commit to an American university or college will be identified. Due to the controversial and opinionated nature of the topic of international student-athletes, the need for research is supported. Questionnaires will be conducted online by both male and female international student-athletes participating in all NCAA sports at universities and colleges of three BCS Conferences. Data on motivational factors will be collected in order to identify which motives drive athletes to participate in their respective NCAA institutions. Once the questionnaires are collected, the major motivational factors will be identified and comparisons of findings will be made between male and female athletes and athletes participating in different sports. Expected results should support previous findings that student-athletes are influenced highly by academic factors, as well as by the chance to participate in highly competitive leagues (Bale, 1991; Garbert, Hale & Montalyo, 1999). Literature on international student-athletes is limited and due to the increase in numbers and popularity of recruiting international athletes to the NCAA, it is important to examine the issues concerning the topic. Without knowing why the international student-athletes come to American colleges and universities, recruiting could become more challenging and retaining these students through matriculation of their degree could become difficult. This study will provide a significant contribution to the literature regarding influencing factors in college choice and will be vital to athletic departments at NCAA institutions in order to aid in recruiting international student-athletes.

Methods: Male and female student-athletes from a university in the southern United States were recruited for the study. 47 participants (males = 13, females = 34) completed the Sport Motivation Scale-II (SMS-II) and Basic Needs Satisfaction in Sport Sale (BNSSS) questionnaire to determine their motivation and basic needs satisfaction during the period of imposed quarantine. Data Analysis: A Mann-Whitney-U test was calculated to determine the differences of composite intrinsic motivation and composite extrinsic motivation and subscales of BNSSS between sex. This was also used to examine the within-sex differences in composite motivation scores. Results: A total of 47 athletes completed the study. Both males and females reported statistically significant higher intrinsic motivation scores than extrinsic motivation scores on the SMS-II [(M: Intrinsic: 39.9 ± 18.0, Extrinsic: 22.2 ± 11.7; p = .003; d = 1.16) (F: Intrinsic: 42.2 ± 13.2, Extrinsic: 28.1 ± 11.7; p .001; d = 1.12)]. No other statistically significant differences were observed (P .05). Relatedness scored the highest for both males and females on the BNSSS. Conclusion: Collegiate athletes, regardless of sex, reported higher levels of intrinsic motivation than extrinsic, and scored satisfaction of relatedness the highest when reflecting on maintaining their sport training during quarantine.

Student-athletes' individual experiences have received considerable attention in the popular media and literature as the pressures to perform both athletically and academically are vast (Benford, 2007; Meyer, 2005). The purpose of this study was to examine whether gender (men's vs. women's sports), sport visibility (highly visible versus non-highly visible sports), race (white vs. non-white), and perceived motivational climate (task- and ego-involved) significantly predicts motivation towards academics, athletics, and career. Finally, this study attempted to establish possible correlational explanations for the lack of academic integrity in intercollegiate athletics. Approximately 310 Division I student-athletes were contacted to participate in the study. Student-athletes in this study were recruited from one Midwest University. Gender, race, and sport visibility were assessed using the demographic questionnaire. To measure players' perceptions of the motivational climate on each team, the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire-2 (PMCSQ-2); (Newton, Duda, & Yin, 2000) was used. The dependent variable of motivation was measured by using the Student Athlete's Motivation toward Sports and Academics Questionnaire (SAMSAQ); (Gaston-Gayles, 2004; 2005) to assess academic, athletic, and career motivation. To describe underlying structure principal components analysis was conducted. On the items of the PMCSQ-2, the analysis produced a three-component solution. The task-involving component accounted for 20.64% of the total variance, ego-involving approach accounted for 13.97% of the total variance, and the ego-involving avoidance accounted for 10.28% of the total variance. On the items of the SAMSAQ, the analysis produced a two-component solution. After iv rotation, the academic motivation component accounted for 21.60% of the total variance, while the sport motivation component accounted for 20.20% of the total variance. To describe and examine the existence of predictable relationships among the independent (gender, sport visibility, race, and perceived motivational climate) and dependent (motivation) variables, multiple regression was conducted. Book excerpt: The National College Athlete Association (NCAA) reports ever-increasing numbers of students participating in collegiate sports. As the demand for and intensity of collegiate sports continue to grow, there is a need to understand the sport enviornment and assist in the development of environments conducive to the well-being of student-athletes. This study used the vocational and industrial-organizational theory of person-environment fit to concptualize the collegiate sport environment as it shares numerous characteristics with a work environment. This study examined the relationships between the perceived cohesion student-athletes experience with their coaches and teammates and their motivation to perform. The impact of three moderators (athletic identity, sex, and sport type) on the cohesion - motivation relationship was also examined. Using data collected from 219 male and female collegiate student-athletes, hierarchical multiple regressions tested the effects of the perceived coach-athlete relationship and team-athlete relationship on predicting athletes' motivation to perform as well as the moderating effects of athletic identity, sex, and sport type. The athletes' perceived coach-athlete cohesion, team-athlete cohesion, and athletic identity (i.e., the degree to which an individual identifies with the athlete role) predicted the intrinsic and self-determined motivation levels of student-athletes. Athletic identity moderated the relationship between perceived team-athlete cohesion and motivation; sport type moderated the relationship between perceived coach-athlete cohesion and motivation. For student-athletes who reported a low athletic identity, perceived cohesion with their team was more predictive of their motivation levels than it was for those who had higher athletic identity. The degree to which they perceived cohesion with coach was more strongly predictive of self-determined motivation levels for student-athletes of individual sports compared to student-athletes involved in team sports. Clinical implications of the findings and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between college student-athletes' well-being, self-ratings of mental toughness in sport, and perceptions of the coach-created motivational climate. One hundred and two NCAA Division I female student-athletes completed measures of well-being, mental toughness, and coach-created motivational climate over the course of a university academic year. The author hypothesized that mental toughness and perceptions of the coach-created motivational climate would predict well-being. Overall, the results of the study found a predictive relationship between well-being and mental toughness, and well-being, mental toughness, and an ego-involving coach-created motivational climate. These results provide initial evidence that cognitive, affective, personality, and environmental factors influence student-athlete well-being. The findings also demonstrate that Henriques et al.'s (2017) Nested Model of Well-being (NM) may be an effective model to understand the unique factors that influence student-athlete well-being. For example, the results of the study indicate that the construct of mental toughness may overlap with Henriques et al.'s (2014) conceptualization of adaptive potentials (one's skills and abilities to function effectively in the environment). Additionally, the influence of a student-athlete's perception of the coach-created motivational climate on well-being may be aligned with the NM's characterization of the environmental domain. These results indicate a need to study other factors that influence student-athlete well-being. This study demonstrates a need to develop measures that assess student-athlete well-being while also accounting for the unique cultural components of college athletics that may influence the well-being of student athletes.

Student-athletes from James Madison University, both at the club and varsity levels were surveyed in this study. There were 129 total student athletes that participated (67 males and 62 females). Exactly 89 participants were varsity athletes and 40 were club athletes. Athletes were presented with an in-person survey that included several demographic questions followed by the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ). The TEOSQ scored athletes on their task and ego orientation during sport participation. The quantitative results of this study do not show a significant correlation between task and ego orientations between male and female athletes at both the varsity and club levels. Independent samples t-tests were run to determine statistical differences between males and females on the task and ego subscales of the TEOSQ. One-way ANOVAs were used to determine if there were any significant differences among task and ego orientation among the three club teams as well as between the varsity teams. There were no significant differences seen except for a p value of .010 between varsity men's baseball and varsity women's golf.
