Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Motivation, athletic identity, and commitment are constructs that have previously been addressed and researched in regards to their impact upon athletes. Each of these constructs has previously been addressed alongside one other construct but all three have not been addressed. In addition to this, research is lacking information regarding collegiate club sport athletes. The purpose of this study was to examine the thoughts of club level athletes and Division I Varsity level athletes as they relate to motivation, athletic identity and commitment to sport. The participants included 12 athletes, 6 at the club level and 6 at the Varsity level. For the club level athletes, themes emerged for motivation which included (1) relationships with teammates, and (2) sport improvement. The themes for commitment were (1) personal commitment, (2) love of the sport, (3) emotional connection, and (4) major part of life. There was also a singular theme found for athletic identity with club sport athletes which was (1) sport as a part of the individual. For varsity athletes the themes that were found for motivation were (1) sense of accomplishment, (2) personal drive, (3) sport improvement, and (4) others as motivators. The themes for commitment were (1) time commitment, (2) parental influence, and (3) scholarship. There was also only one theme for athletic identity found for Varsity which was (1) importance of the athlete role. From these themes, research may be conducted to further investigate Varsity and club level athletes in regards to what motivates them, why they remain committed to their sport, and how much they identify with the athlete role. This information may be beneficial for coaches, captains, and other leadership figures in relation to athletics at these levels.

Student-athletes from James Madison University, both at the club and varsity levels were surveyed in this study. There were 129 total student athletes that participated (67 males and 62 females). Exactly 89 participants were varsity athletes and 40 were club athletes. Athletes were presented with an in-person survey that included several demographic questions followed by the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ). The TEOSQ scored athletes on their task and ego orientation during sport participation. The quantitative results of this study do not show a significant correlation between task and ego orientations between male and female athletes at both the varsity and club levels. Independent samples t-tests were run to determine statistical differences between males and females on the task and ego subscales of the TEOSQ. One-way ANOVAs were used to determine if there were any significant differences among task and ego orientation among the three club teams as well as between the varsity teams. There were no significant differences seen except for a p value of .010 between varsity men's baseball and varsity women's golf. Book excerpt: The National College Athlete Association (NCAA) reports ever-increasing numbers of students participating in collegiate sports. As the demand for and intensity of collegiate sports continue to grow, there is a need to understand the sport enviornment and assist in the development of environments conducive to the well-being of student-athletes. This study used the vocational and industrial-organizational theory of person-environment fit to concptualize the collegiate sport environment as it shares numerous characteristics with a work environment. This study examined the relationships between the perceived cohesion student-athletes experience with their coaches and teammates and their motivation to perform. The impact of three moderators (athletic identity, sex, and sport type) on the cohesion - motivation relationship was also examined. Using data collected from 219 male and female collegiate student-athletes, hierarchical multiple regressions tested the effects of the perceived coach-athlete relationship and team-athlete relationship on predicting athletes' motivation to perform as well as the moderating effects of athletic identity, sex, and sport type. The athletes' perceived coach-athlete cohesion, team-athlete cohesion, and athletic identity (i.e., the degree to which an individual identifies with the athlete role) predicted the intrinsic and self-determined motivation levels of student-athletes. Athletic identity moderated the relationship between perceived team-athlete cohesion and motivation; sport type moderated the relationship between perceived coach-athlete cohesion and motivation. For student-athletes who reported a low athletic identity, perceived cohesion with their team was more predictive of their motivation levels than it was for those who had higher athletic identity. The degree to which they perceived cohesion with coach was more strongly predictive of self-determined motivation levels for student-athletes of individual sports compared to student-athletes involved in team sports. Clinical implications of the findings and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: "Research indicates that many athletes fail to maintain regular physical activity participation after transitioning out of competitive sports. Despite the important health consequences for athletes who drop from high activity to inactivity after completing their athletic careers, long-term physical activity maintenance among former college athletes is understudied. The present study examined physical activity behavior in former college athletes. Previous research suggests that self-identity influences physical activity participation, and individuals who are motivated by self-determined and volitional reasons are more likely to maintain their exercise behavior over time. Therefore, this research examined a theoretical model that incorporates tenets of identity theory and self-determination theory to investigate the relationships among identity, motivation, and physical activity participation in former college athletes. A total of 282 former Division I college athletes completed an online survey consisting of the Exercise Identity Scale, the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, the Behavioral Regulation for Exercise Questionnaire, the Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire, and demographic items. Results suggest that exercise identity and athletic identity are both positively related to physical activity in former college athletes, and the identity - physical activity relationship was only partially mediated by self-determined forms of motivation. Exercise identity was a stronger predictor of self-determined motivation and physical activity compared to athletic identity. There was a significant interaction effect between exercise identity and athletic identity such that having a higher exercise identity strengthened the athletic identity - physical activity relationship. Path analyses are presented that model the direct and indirect effects among the identity, motivation, and physical activity variables. The relevant implications of these models for former college athletes and their participation in physical activity are discussed. The findings of this study add to our understanding of former college athletes' physical activity behavior within an identity and self-determination theory framework, and provide an evidence base to guide the development of appropriate interventions that can promote healthy, active lifestyles among current and future student-athletes."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Qualitative analyses were used to extract major themes from the data, and a Mixed Methods analysis was used to analyze quantitative and qualitative data in a side-by-side comparison.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the moral foundations of intercollegiate student-athletes in relation to their athletic identity, specifically with respect to student-development in college. Research has established that prolonged participation in sport contributes to the development of an athletic identity (Brewer & Cornelius, 2001; Brewer, Van Raalte & Linder, 1990; Cieslak, 2004) and countless studies have identified significant categorical differences in moral reasoning tendencies between student-athletes and non-athlete students (Bonfiglio, 2011; Bredemeier & Shields, 2006; Howard-Hamilton & Sina, 2001; Lyons & Turner, 2015; Priest, Krause, & Beach, 1999). Two hundred and thirty-eight NCAA Division I intercollegiate, club sport, and intramural sport student-athletes, possessing varying degrees of athletic identity, served as participants. Athletic Identity was measured with the 7-item, 3-factor abbreviated version of the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (Brewer & Cornelius, 2001), and the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (MFQ) (Graham, et al., 2011) was used to evaluate the moral foundations on which elite-athletes rely. Regression analyses suggested that athletic identity was significantly related to the Ingroup/loyalty, Authority/respect, and Purity/sanctity foundations of the Moral Foundations Theory (MFT) (Graham et al., 2011). ANOVA analyses indicated that female athletes scored higher on Harm/care and Fairness/reciprocity than male athletes and that time (e.g., years of collegiate sporting experience) may contribute to the development of athletes{u2019} moral orientations. The results suggest that maintaining increased degrees of athletic identity may play a role in the moral foundations on which NCAA Division I intercollegiate student-athletes rely.

Book excerpt: Collegiate athletes have spent their athletic career growing their athletic identity and are given significant support throughout their time in college, and so, the transition into retirement can be difficult and often cause a sense of loss with the end of their athletic career. This transition from college into sports retirement can be affected by a variety of different factors and influences on the individual and their experiences. This mixed methods, phenomenological study looked at the impact of athletic identity on both male and female athletes as they transitioned into retirement, focusing on Division I baseball and softball athletes. These participants were asked to answer the AIMS-Plus questionnaire and participate in an open-ended interview looking retrospectively at their collegiate career and transition into retirement. The results of the AIMS-Plus questionnaires revealed five athletes with high athletic identity (scores 1467-2200), three females and two males, and five athletes with moderate athletic identity (scores 1466-733), three males and two females. The data analysis of the interviews found the common positive factors influencing an athletes transition were outside interests, support from family and teammates, and continued relationship with their sport. The negative factors were involuntary retirement, the time commitment of their college program, and the lack of support from their programs after retirement. Injury was found to be both a positive and negative factor in transitioning depending on the individuals' relationship with the injury. Participants with a higher athletic identity, scored through the AIMS-Plus questionnaire, used language of depression and reported a sense of loss. Some participants reported their athletic identity helping them transition into their next career, focusing on the skills they had learned through athletics. In the reflections of these participants it was found that they wished there was a program in place to aid them into retirement with emphasis on career planning, support groups, and nutrition and exercise education. In summary, the experiences of collegiate athletes transitioning into retirement is influenced by a variety of factors and highly individual. The clinical significance of this research should provide future research into implementing support programs for collegiate athletes transitioning into retirement.

Book excerpt: Athletic success sometimes may involve participants to work hard, be self-disciplined, exhibit perseverance and determination, and be able to concentrate. If such qualities are transferred into the academic domain, students may also experience academic motivation and success. Many varsity student-athletes are lacking motivation and hard work in the classroom but excel in these categories on the athletic fields. This study of the student-athlete and their motivational levels both in and out of the classroom will provide educators, coaches, and administrators with the knowledge about how to create a positive academic learning environment for its student athletes. The self-expectancy theory by Atkinson, Wigfield, and Eccles (2000) relates motivational levels to expectancies set by individuals. Motivational levels determine the tasks that we choose, persistence during those tasks, how much effort is exerted, and potentially levels of performance. This study examines how athletics influences academic motivation of high school varsity athletes. This phenomenological study analyzes the experiences of five high school varsity student-athletes in the classroom and on the athletic field. The sample was randomly selected participants who were currently participating in competitive varsity athletics at Corbin High School. Qualitative data was triangulated through interviews, observation, and artifact collection. The findings from this study can guide teachers, coaches, and administrators to know how to best motivate students in suburban schools where there is a high priority placed on athletics. Increased levels of motivation can in turn lead to higher levels of academic achievement increasing student performance.
