Book excerpt: This study examined perceptions of successful racial and ethnic minority college graduates on social media regarding factors contributing to their academic success and overcoming the academic achievement gap; a total of 228 racial and ethnic minority participants completed an anonymous survey. The survey was framed by Harper's (2012) Anti-Deficit Achievement Framework. Further, through the lens of Social Cognitive Career Theory ([SCCT]; Lent, Brown & Hackett, 1994), the study investigated whether perceived outcomes differ depending on participants' personal backgrounds such as gender, race, and educational attainment. As factors related to academic achievement gap, the study yielded those who experienced the achievement gap are significantly more likely to be a first-generation college student, had lower socioeconomic status, found K-12 school agents' support as significant contributions, and were more likely to utilize campus resources. In light of seeking opportunities to overcome the academic achievement gap, minority participants were likely to hire a private tutor, and change majors. Further, they perceived that "self-motivation" and "hard-working" were the most important attitudes to improve academic performance. Significant differences in participants' perceptions emerged depending on participants' personal backgrounds. Regarding self-motivation, those with bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees were significantly more likely to perceive self-motivation as the most important factor compared to those with associate or other specialist degrees. Compared to female participants, male participants' perceived hard working was the most important factor. Those with a higher education degree were more likely to perceive the degree of parental support as an important opportunity to overcome the academic achievement gap compared to their counterparts with a lower education level. Low-income participants perceived the importance of K-12 school agents more than middle- and high-income participants. The study provided evidence of the existence of a relationship between a range of variables and reduction in the academic achievement gap by demonstrating how racial/ethnic minority students can be successful by being self-motivated, working hard, and seeking a range of opportunities in pursuing a college degree and preparing for career readiness as a college graduate.

Thus, even as interest in medical school and veterinary medical school continues to rise (Eagan et al., 2016), thereby increasing the competition to obtain an acceptance, students and parents continue to hold an expectation that their undergraduate institution will adequately prepare them to successfully matriculate into medical school or veterinary medical school. Although a variety of factors influence acceptance to professional school, earning a high grade point average remains one of the most influential admissions factors (AAMC, 2018d; Dunleavy, Sondheimer, Castillo-Page, & Bletzinger, 2011; Elam, Stratton, Scott, Wilson, & Leiber, 2002; Kreiter & Kreiter, 2007; Monroe, Quinn, Samuelson, Dunleavy & Dowd, 2013). Therefore, it is important for colleges and universities to understand how characteristics of goal orientation, including motivation and resilience, may lead to greater academic success. In order to explore the relationship between goal orientation and grade point average, this study utilized Archer's (1994) achievement goal theory. Archer's (1994) achievement goal theory is centered on the notion that students have a predisposition to align with one of three goal orientations: performance-goal orientation, mastery-goal orientation, or alienation-goal orientation, and that their goal orientation will have a significant impact on their academic achievement and resilience. Although motivation and resilience, as it relates to goal orientation, have been shown to positively impact academic achievement in general populations of collegiate students (Amrai, Motlagh, Zalani, & Parhon, 2011; Garcia & Pintrich, 1994), studies evaluating the relationship of these variables among pre-health cohorts are extremely limited. This study utilized portions of the Modified Archers Health Professions Motivation Survey (MAHPMS) which asked participants to answer questions on a Likert-type five-point scale, with each question aligning to one of three goal orientation subscales (either performance-goal oriented, mastery-goal oriented, or alienation-goal oriented). The survey was emailed to self-identified pre-health students at a small, private institution in central Florida during the fall 2019 semester. After delimiting the data to pre-medical and pre-veterinary medical students enrolled in a full time course load with at least seven credits of natural science coursework, the viable records were analyzed to determine each individual respondent's preferred goal orientation. Individual mean scores were calculated for each subscale and the subscale with the highest average score represented an individual's preferred goal orientation. Institutional data was used to incorporate demographic information and fall 2019 cumulative grade point average (GPA). Results indicated that pre-medical and pre-veterinary medical students largely align with either a mastery-goal orientation or a performance-goal orientation, however, due to a lack of statistical significance, preference for mastery-goal orientation or performance-goal orientation cannot be attributed to grade point average. Statistically significant relationships were discovered between goal orientation and ethnicity and goal orientation and academic major, requiring further exploration. While this study did not reveal statistically significant differences between multiple variables, this research contributes to the lack of research on pre-medical and pre-veterinary medical students. More current research is needed on the population of pre-health students to determine if goal orientation impacts academic success, as it has been shown to do for general college students.

Book excerpt: Empowerment, a core value of community psychology, is defined as a process by which people, organizations, and communities gain mastery over issues of concern to them in their lives (Rappaport, 1987). In community psychology, empowerment is understood as a construct particularly and primarily salient for minority groups who hold a marginalized position in society, as psychological empowerment is a product of an individual's interaction with his or her context. Consistent with a social justice framework, community psychology attempts to empower those who have traditionally been disenfranchised in particular contexts. One such population is underrepresented racial/ethnic minority students in higher education. This group has historically experienced segregation and discrimination, a point reflected in the achievement gap between minority students and their majority counterparts. Previous theoretical work suggests that students who are empowered by their school experiences develop the ability, confidence, and motivation to succeed academically. They participate competently in instruction as a result of having developed a positive cultural identity, as well as appropriate knowledge of interactional structures within the school setting (Altschul, Oyserman, & Bybee, 2006; Cummins, 1983; Horvat & Lewis, 2003; McQuillan, 2005; Tikunoff, 1983). In this way, an empowerment perspective could conceivably improve the educational outcomes of minority college students. Despite its appropriateness and potential, an empowerment perspective with racial/ethnic minority students in higher education has been neglected in research, such that it is not well understood, quantified nor applied. Drawing from literature in both the community and education fields, the current study uses a participatory mixed methods approach to define empowerment for this population, and to develop a tool to measure it. In Study I, qualitative interviews were conducted with 17 racial/ethnic minority college students, yielding empowerment themes at the Individual, University, and Societal levels. These themes were then used to develop quantitative survey items. In Study 2, the quantitative survey was administered to 601 racial/ethnic minority students at one time point, and 124 students at a second time point. Using exploratory factor analysis, researchers identified 4 underlying factors of empowerment: Supportive University Environment, Self-Efficacy/Control, Student Racial/Ethnic Identity, and Financial Confidence. These factors form the College Student Empowerment Scales for Racial/Ethnic Minorities. Overall, the measure demonstrates strong psychometric properties, including good content, constituent, and convergent validity, as well as test-retest reliability. Findings indicate that racial/ethnic minority college students experience aspects of empowerment similar to previous research (Frymier, Shulman, & Houser, 1996; Zimmerman, 1995), as well as in distinctive ways. These experiences are a result of both the historical marginalization of racial/ethnic minority students and the motivation drawn from the desire to positively represent and inspire their communities. Specifically, the College Student Empowerment Scales highlight the role of context, both organizational and societal, within a conceptualization of psychological empowerment for racial/ethnic minority students. Additionally, empowerment factors are related to academic achievement, suggesting that by improving these aspects of the college experience, it may be possible to facilitate the academic success of a group often considered at-risk. In general, the development of the College Student Empowerment Scales for Racial/Ethnic Minorities, based on lived experiences, is an important first step in understanding the construct and its role in higher education.

Multiple social, structural, and psychological variables have been presented to try to explain the achievement gap. Researchers have also considered an individual's racial-ethnic identity (REI) as an important variable that contributes to achievement outcomes. Oyserman and colleagues developed a model of REI that emphasizes three key factors of ones racial-ethnic identity that have a direct impact on achievement. Further, her model posits that the interaction between two key REI variables, feelings of connectedness to one's REI group (connectedness) and the perception that one's racial-ethnic group values achievement (embedded achievement), contributes to positive achievement outcomes. Although research has suggested that REI significantly impacts achievement, the specific processes by which this occurs are less known. Considering the social-cognitive literature, it is plausible that different psychological and motivational beliefs mediate the relationship between REI and achievement-related outcomes. This dissertation study examines the mediating effect of sense of school belonging and perceived sense of school engagement on the relationship between REI (embedded achievement and connectedness) and academic achievement of minority middle school students longitudinally through the use of structural equation modeling. Results indicate that embedded achievement significantly predicts academic achievement. Furthermore, sense of belonging to school mediates this relationship for all racial and gender groups. Results also revealed that embedded achievement significantly predicted student perceived engagement for Hispanic students. Strategies to promote sense of belonging and embedded achievement at the personal, structural, community, peer, and family levels are discussed.
