Book excerpt: A Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) consists of mobile nodes, equipped with wireless communications devices, which form a communications network without fixed network infrastructure or topology. The MANET is typically characterized by: limited bandwidth; limited radio range; high mobility; and susceptibility to impairments that degrade the signal to noise ratio and bit error rates. These characteristics pose challenges to the MANET routing protocols. In addition to these characteristics, we have found that the mobility pattern of the nodes also has significant impact on the MANET routing protocols. In order to achieve improved efficiency for these networks, we propose the Motion Vector Routing (MoVeR) protocol. MoVeR is a position based routing protocol for MANET communications that uses the motion information of mobile nodes to determine how to route the packets. MoVeR predicts the future positions of mobile nodes, based on motion vectors containing current and previous position, and velocity information. The protocol is designed for applications in which we expect that nodes will have access to a position service. We also assume the availability of a location service by which the sender can obtain an initial estimate of the location of the destination. Nodes using the MoVeR protocol distribute the routing information to neighbors in one-hop transmission range. Given the position information, MoVeR can potentially employ one of several forwarding strategies. The implementation used for this research employs a greedy algorithm forwarding the packet to the neighbor such that the neighbor is closer to the destination in the near future. Since the forwarding strategy could be subject to local minima problems, the algorithm also includes a recovery mode which is activated when this problem has occurred. In the recovery mode, the protocol traverses the planarized graph to the destination. MoVeR is a localized routing protocol and therefore exhibits reduced control overhead compared to protocols which maintain a global topology. The mobility prediction capability of MoVeR improves routing performance in several types of sophisticated mobility scenarios. We describe the MoVeR protocol algorithm, implementation, and simulation results show that MoVeR gives improved performance compared to Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing and Dynamic Source Routing.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the Forecasting Routing Technique (FORTEL), a routing protocol for Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs) based on the nodes' Location Information. FORTEL stores the nodes' location information in the Location Table (LT) in order to construct routes between the source and the destination nodes. FORTEL follows the source routing strategy, which has rarely been applied in position-based routing. According to the source routing strategy, the end-to-end route is attached to the packet, therefore, the processing cost, in regards to the intermediate nodes that simply relay the packet according to route, is minimized. FORTEL's key mechanisms include: first, the location update scheme, employed to keep the LT entries up-to-date with the network topology. Besides the mobility variation and the constant rate location update schemes applied, a window location update scheme is presented to increase the LT's information accuracy. Second, the switching mechanism, between "Hello" message and location update employed, to reduce the protocol's routing overhead. Third and most important is the route computation mechanism, which is integrated with a topology forecasting technique to construct up-to-date routes between the communication peers, aiming to achieve high delivery rate and increase the protocol robustness against the nodes' movement. FORTEL demonstrates higher performance as compared to other MANET's routing protocols, and it delivers up to 20% more packets than AODV and up to 60 % more than DSR and OLSR, while maintaining low levels of routing overhead and network delay at the same time. The effectiveness of the window update scheme is also discussed, and it proves to increase FORTEL's delivery rate by up to 30% as compared to the other update schemes. A common and frequently occurring phenomenon, in wireless networks, is the Hidden Terminal problem that significantly impacts the communication performance and the efficiency of the routing and MAC protocols. Beaconless routing approach in MANETs, which delivers data packets without prior knowledge of any sort Hof information, suffers from packet duplication caused by the hidden nodes during the contention process. Moreover, the throughput of the IEEE MAC protocol decreases dramatically when the hidden terminal problem occurs. RTS/CTS mechanism fails to eliminate the problem and can further degrade the network's performance by introducing additional overhead. To tackle these challenges, this thesis presents two techniques, the Sender Suppression Algorithm and the Location-Aided MAC, where both rely on the nodes' position to eliminate packet duplication in the beaconless routing and improve the performance of the 802.11 MAC respectively. Both schemes are based on the concept of grouping the nodes into zones and assign different time delay to each one. According to the Sender Suppression Algorithm, the sender's forwarding area is divided into three zones, therefore, the local timer, set to define the time that the receiver has to wait before responding to the sender's transmission, is added to the assigned zone delay. Following the first response, the sender interferes and suppresses the receivers with active timer of. On the other hand, the Location-Aided MAC, essentially a hybrid MAC, combines the concepts of time division and carrier sensing. The radio range of the wireless receiver is partitioned into four zones with different zone delays assigned to each zone. Channel access within the zone is purely controlled by CSMA/CA protocol, while it is time-based amongst zones. The effectiveness of the proposed techniques is demonstrated through simulation tests. Location-Aided MAC considerably improves the network's throughput compared to CSMA/CA and RTS/CTS. However, remarkable results come when the proposed technique and the RTS/CTS are combined, which achieves up to 20% more throughput as compared to the standalone RTS/CTS. Finally, the thesis presents a novel link lifetime estimation method for greedy forwarding to compute the link duration between two nodes. Based on a newly introduced Stability-Aware Greedy (SAG) scheme, the proposed method incorporates the destination node in the computation process and thus has a significant advantage over the conventional method, which only considers the information of the nodes composing the link.

It includes a variety of applications such as co-operative traffic monitoring, control of traffic flows, blind crossing, prevention of collisions, nearby information services and real-time detour routes computation. Another important application for VANETs is providing Internet connectivity to vehicular nodes while on the move, so that passengers can download music, send emails, book a restaurant or play games. Because of the high nodes mobility and unreliable channel conditions, VANETs have unique characteristics which pose many challenging research issues. This work is mainly focused on a key networking problem: routing protocol for VANETs. The main requirement of routing protocols is to achieve minimal communication time with minimum consumption of network resources. Many routing protocols have been developed for MANETs (Mobile Ad-hoc Networks), such as AODV (Ad-hoc On demand Distance Vector) and DSR (Dynamic Source Routing). However, VANETs differ from MANETs by their highly dynamic topology. A number of studies have been done to simulate and compare the performance of those routing protocols in various traffic conditions in VANETs. Simulation results showed that MANET routing protocols suffer from poor performances because of the characteristics of fast vehicle's movement, dynamic information exchange and relative high speed of mobile nodes. This text aims to continue the work of Roger Calzada in his final degree thesis. In that thesis, AODV was the routing protocol used during the simulation process to evaluate its performance over VANETs. The conclusion of the thesis was that AODV is not the best routing protocol to handle high mobility of nodes and short duration of routes. He proposed as future work the evaluation of existing routing protocol which considers car position, trajectories or speeds gathered via GPS (Global Positioning System) that could lead to better results. To consider the vehicle network, people can intuitively think to use the geographical position information to decide the route. Most position based routing algorithms base forwarding decision on location information. GSR (Geographical Source Routing) is a promising routing technique for VANETs and recently several routing protocols have been proposed based on it. For example, GPSR (Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing) is one of the best known position-based protocols in literature. Basically, our project is divided in two parts: first, we make a state of the art related to the VANETs in order to find the most appropriate and recommended mobility generator and network simulator reported in literature. We also include at the end of this part the description of GPSR routing protocol. Second, from the research done in the previous part, we use VanetMobiSim as a mobility generator due to its variety models that could be tested; and NS2 as a network simulator for being one of the most used by many authors and also due to its compatibility with VanetMobiSim. Using these tools, VanetMobiSim and NS2, we carry out a performance evaluation of two routing protocols (AODV and GPSR) over VANETs. We give different values to parameters such as the number of nodes, speed, transmission range and different propagation models. Finally, we analyze and discuss the benefits of GPSR compared to AODV in vehicular scenarios.

Book excerpt: Opportunistic Routing (OR) is an effective and enhanced routing scheme for wireless multihop environment. OR is an approach that selects a certain number of best forwarders (candidates) at each hop by taking the advantage of the broadcast nature of the wireless medium to reach the destination. When a set of candidates receive the packet, they coordinate with each other to figure out which one has to forward the packet toward the destination. Most of the research in this area has been done in mesh networks where nodes do not have mobility. In this survey, we propose a new OR protocol for mobile ad hoc scenarios called as Enhanced Mobility-based Opportunistic Routing (EMOR) protocol. To deal with the node mobility, we have proposed a new metric which considers the following: geographical position of the candidates; the link delivery probability to reach them; the number of neighboring nodes of candidates; and the predicted position of nodes using the motion vector of the nodes. We have compared EMOR with five other well-known routing protocols in terms of delivery ratio, end-to-end delay, and expected number of transmissions from source to the destination. Our simulation results show that proposed protocol improves delivery ratio and number of expected transmission in terms of different type of mobility models.

Wireless by nature, MANETs do not have a specific network infrastructure. It is a collection of wireless mobile devices that communicate with each other without the help of any third party backbone like a base-station or a router. It can be hard to imagine how every node in this type of network communicate with one another without having a router. In MANETs, nodes change locations with time, configure themselves and get the information transmitted from source to destination without the help of any router or base station. Hence, for efficient data transmission, it is critical to understand the type of routing that is being used by these networks. Since they have no specific routers to handle these tasks, it can be a monumental task for the nodes to efficiently determine a path to forward and route their packets when they are at constant motion. This research makes a comprehensive performance analysis of the various mobile ad-hoc routing protocols. Over 160 simulation scenarios have been conducted and as many as 6 performance parameters are analyzed and compared in three different scales of network to make it a comprehensive analysis. Significant work is done in this area for more than a decade and researchers around the world have come up with a wide range of results. In this research, the results from previous work are taken into account for comparison and a wide analysis is made to carve out the most efficient routing algorithm under various mobility scenarios. All the major proactive and reactive routing protocols viz. Destination sequenced distance vector (DSDV), Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR), Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) and Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) protocols are compared in three different phases - mobility, speed and network load. Simulation results show that dynamic source routing protocol (DSR) performs the best in small networks while ad-hoc on demand distance vector (AODV) routing protocol performs the best in medium and large networks. Although OLSR fails to cope with the level of AODV, it can be a superior protocol having demonstrated comparable performance to AODV and its proactive nature of routing packets.

The performance differentials shall provide an insight about the sensitivity of the protocols when operating in more challenging environment such as rapid change in network topology or the density of the network.

Book excerpt: An ad hoc network is a collection of wireless mobile nodes dynamically forming a temporary network without the use of any existing netwrok infrastructure of centralized administration and consists of mobile nodes that use a wireless interface to communicate with each other. These mobile nodes serve as both and routers so they can forward packets on behalf of each other. Hence, the mobile nodes are able to communicate beyond their transmission range by supporting multi hop communication. However, the fact that there is no central infrastructure and that the devices can move randomly gives rise to various kinds of problem, such as routing and security and qualtiy of service (QoS). In this thesis the problem of routing is considered. An Ad-Hoc network has certain characteristics, which impose new demand on the routing protocol the most important characteristic is the dynamic topology, which is a consequence of node mobility. Nodes can change position quite frequently, which means that we need a routing protocol that quickly adapts to topology changes. The nodes in ad hoc network can consist of laptops and PDA (Personal Digital Assistants) and are often very limited in resources such as CPU capacity, storage capacity, battery power and bandwidth. This means that routing protocol should try to minimize control traffic, such as period update message. Instead the routing protocol should be reactive, thus only only calculate routes upon receiving a specific request. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IEFT) currently has a working group called mobile Ad hoc network (MANET) that is working on routing specification for Ad hoc networks. This thesis evaluates some of the routing protocols such as AODV (Ad hoc on demand Distance vector) and DSR (Dynamic Sources Routing) and DSDV (Destination Sequence Distance Vector) for performance testing and an enhanced implementation of AODV, which is able to detect Internet gateway in the proactive, reactive, and hybrid situation. This evaluation is done by by means of simulation using NS-2 developed by University California Berkeley. There are several ad hor routing protocols, such as AODV, DSR, and DSDV that propose solutions for routing within a mobile ad hoc network. However, since there is an interest in communication between not only mobile devices in an ad hoc network, but also between a mobile device in an ad hoc network and a fixed device in a field network (e.g. the Internet), the ad hoc routing protocols need to be modified. In this thesis the ad hoc routing protocol AODV is used to examine the interconnection between mobile ad hoc network and the Internet. For this purpose Network Simulator 2, NS 2, has been used. Moreover, three proposed approaches for gateway discovery are implemented; propose a forwarding algorithm, and route determination algorithm for default route and host route in MANET are investigated.
