Instruction and templates for recording, typologizing, classifying, and analyzing ritual or magico-religious material culture are also provided to guide researchers in the survey, collection, and cataloging processes. The bulleted formatting and topical range make this a highly accessible work, while providing an incredible wealth of information in a single volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixed Magic: Global-local dialogues in fairy tales for young readers considers retellings and adaptations from a ‘glocal’ context: a framework focused on the reciprocal and cross-cultural exchange between global processes and local practices and their potential transformative effects. The study examines an eclectic range of retellings from the East and West from the 19th century until the present, among them orientalized picturebook versions of Beauty and the Beast and Bluebeard; Disney’s animated classics; Asian versions of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid; Gene Luen Yang's graphic novel American Born Chinese; and the fantasy films of Hayao Miyazaki. Drawing on theories of globalization, cognitive narratology, subjectivity, and eastern thought, the book reveals new implications for intertextual analysis. This beautifully illustrated volume is the first sustained study of the effects of global-local and East-West interchanges on representations of self and Others in children’s literature and folklore studies.

This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Faustian Motif in the Tragedies by Christopher Marlowe discusses the argument that the pact with demonic forces, and/or its consequences, is a motif explored not only in Doctor Faustus, but in Marlowe’s other plays as well (Tamburlaine the Great, Dido, Queen of Carthage, The Jew of Malta). The book sets out to explore the way Marlowe explained this process, from play to play, in psychological and cultural terms, and to demonstrate its relevance for modern man and his culture. The text is divided into the Introduction and four main parts, each focusing on a particular aforementioned play by Marlowe. The book does not follow the actual chronological order in which these plays are supposed to have been written, not because it is uncertain, but for the obvious reason suggested by the nature of the theme: the text begins with Dr. Faustus because it is the only way to introduce and discuss the possible symbolic meanings of the act of selling one’s soul to the Devil. It ends with The Jew of Malta because in the world of Marlowe’s Malta – closest perhaps to our own in its mindless pursuit of profit – the major protagonists no longer have any soul to lose or to renounce. The method used in the book is wide-ranging and eclectic: besides relying on some permanently valid ideas of Humanist criticism, the book also offers insights into the views of the New Critics, particularly their requirement of the close reading of the literary works chosen for examination. Their approach is combined here with that of the New Historicists, who provided a corrective to the New Critic’s formalism by insisting on the importance of taking into consideration the historical and cultural context the work belongs to. The book will appeal to both scholars and students interested in the field of the English Renaissance literature, and also to a wider reading audience keen on observing, detecting and understanding the cultural processes equally relevant for the history of the English Renaissance period and present–day Western society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Beckh ventures into provinces that I have not had the opportunity of investigating myself…’ – Rudolf Steiner Lost for decades, the manuscript of Hermann Beckh’s final lectures on the subject of music present fundamentally new insights into its cosmic origins. Beckh characterises the qualities of musical development, examines select musical works (that represent for him the peak of human ingenuity), and throws new light on the nature and source of human creativity and inspiration. Published here for the first time, the lectures demonstrate a distinctive approach founded on the raw material of musical perception. Beckh discusses the whistling wind, the billowing wave, the song of the birds and particularly the theme of longing. Never losing the ground from under his feet, he penetrates perennial themes: from the yearning for real spontaneity and the ‘Mystery background’ uniting heaven and earth, to spiritual knowledge that can meet the demands of the twenty-first century. Out of the cosmic context, Beckh writes to the individual situation. From there, he seeks again the re-won cosmic context. He does not write as a musical specialist and then turn to universal human concerns; rather, Beckh writes from universal human concerns and reveals music as of special concern to everyone. In addition to the transcripts of fifteen lectures, this book contains a valuable introduction and editorial footnotes. It also features appendices including Beckh’s essay ‘The Mystery of the Night in Wagner and Novalis’; reminiscences of Beckh by August Pauli and Harro Rückner; Donald Francis Tovey’s ‘Wagnerian harmony and the evolution of the Tristan-chord’, and several contemporaneous reviews of Beckh’s published works.
