Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imbued with character and independence, strength and articulateness, humor and conviction, abundant biblical knowledge and intense compassion, Katharina Schütz Zell (1498–1562) was an outspoken religious reformer in sixteenth-century Germany who campaigned for the right of clergy to marry and the responsibility of lay people—women as well as men—to proclaim the Gospel. As one of the first and most daring models of the pastor’s wife in the Protestant Reformation, Schütz Zell demonstrated that she could be an equal partner in marriage; she was for many years a respected, if unofficial, mother of the established church of Strasbourg in an age when ecclesiastical leadership was dominated by men. Though a commoner, Schütz Zell participated actively in public life and wrote prolifically, including letters of consolation, devotional writings, biblical meditations, catechetical instructions, a sermon, and lengthy polemical exchanges with male theologians. The complete translations of her extant publications, except for her longest, are collected here in Church Mother, offering modern readers a rare opportunity to understand the important work of women in the formation of the early Protestant church.

Book excerpt: It would be reasonable to estimate that multiple hundreds of thousands of people have become followers of Jesus Christ as a result of the modern church-planting movement. One characteristic of the literature of this movement has been an almost singular focus on the individual who is sent out to lead the new congregation, rather than on the vital role of the sending or sponsoring church. Practically all the books are written with one target in mind: this individual leader, the pioneer pastor, usually referred to as the church planter. The Mother Church is not written for pioneer pastors; it is written for the leaders of potential mother churches. It is designed to help leaders assess whether and when the birthing of a new church is a good idea for their congregation and to provide them with tools to birth and nurture healthy, thriving, life-giving new churches. Church leaders who desire to see their mission efforts survive and thrive need to give special attention to the hard-won insights of John Bangs The Mother Church. Bangs is not only a mission planter and pastor, but he brings the broader view of a church-planting leader ... Charles J. Scalise, Ph.D., Professor of Church History, Fuller Theological Seminary The Mother Church will revolutionize the way we view and do birthing of mission churches. Kent J. Ingle, D.Min., Dean, College of Ministry, Northwest University

Book excerpt: Carl Braaten here issues an energetic call for a truly ecumenical church, including a Lutheran rationale for recovery of the historical episcopacy and papal primacy as servants of the gospel. Braaten writes of the church's place in the divine scheme of things and of the various modern isms that distort or hide the classical Christian tradition. Tracing his own ecumenical journey, he outlines an ecclesiology of communion and advances specific proposals for enhancing Christian unity in liturgy, spirituality, and church polity. The confessing movement named after Martin Luther he views in terms of its basic intent to reform and renew the church, not to start a new Christianity in a multiplicity of separate denominations.

Book excerpt: Modern evangelicals have gained money, power, and influence, and it has been like giving whiskey to a two-year-old. The need of the hour is theological, not political. The arena is the pulpit and the table, not the legislative chamber. Before we are equipped to proclaim His lordship to the inhabitants of all the earth, we must live as though we believed it in the Church. Mother Kirk presents a very practical and pastoral guide to many of the countless issues that arise in conservative Christian churches. The essays span subjects ranging from the nature of legalism and church authority to worship music, debt, youth ministry, and pastoral character.

Each chapter of The Church Is Our Mother explores one theme mothers and Mother Church have in common: creation, caring, teaching, acceptance, sacrifice, healing, and celebration. A study guide offers relevant meditations from the liturgy, the Catechism, the saints and the sacraments, and also shares personal stories from seven other mothers to inspire readers on their own journeys of faith and family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sweeping history, Alexander Kitroeff shows how the Greek Orthodox Church in America has functioned as much more than a religious institution, becoming the focal point in the lives of the country's million-plus Greek immigrants and their descendants. Assuming the responsibility of running Greek-language schools and encouraging local parishes to engage in cultural and social activities, the church became the most important Greek American institution and shaped the identity of Greeks in the United States. Kitroeff digs into these traditional activities, highlighting the American church's dependency on the "mother church," the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople, and the use of Greek language in the Sunday liturgy. Today, as this rich biography of the church shows us, Greek Orthodoxy remains in between the Old World and the New, both Greek and American.

The Catechism draws on the Bible, the Mass, the Sacraments, Church tradition and teaching, and the lives of saints. It comes with a complete index, footnotes and cross-references for a fuller understanding of every subject. The word catechism means "instruction" - this book will serve as the standard for all future catechisms. Using the tradition of explaining what the Church believes (the Creed), what she celebrates (the Sacraments), what she lives (the Commandments), and what she prays (the Lord's Prayer), the Catechism of the Catholic Church offers challenges for believers and answers for all those interested in learning about the mystery of the Catholic faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a positive, coherent and contemporary map for our spiritual journey toward transformation.

Book excerpt: GOD HAS PLACED IN EVERY CHRISTIAN'S LIFE a strong desire and abilities to make a difference in the world. You don't have to be ordained, rich or famous to use your talents to make a significant impact to benefit others and honor God. We have a rich Church heritage of ordinary believers who sacrificially chose to address ignored human needs with remarkable faith and action. In seven testimonial letters, discover the secrets for their success, from how Judge Deborah became the Joan of Arc of her day to a teaching nun becoming the 20th century's most admired humanitarian. Let these heroic "Mothers" of the Faith inspire and challenge you to fulfill your destiny and unique service to Christ. "No one is better equipped to write a book on Church Mothers than is Rev. Ehrenborg. She has not only extensively studied these women, but has also lived them in her dramatic performances. Well researched, the book is engaging and accessible to those in ministry as well as lay people, male and female. Indeed, this is a volume for men as much as it is for women. We all expand our horizons when we come to grips with the lives of our fascinating Church Mothers." RUTH A. TUCKER, PH.D., Seminary professor and author of Extraordinary Women of Christian History, Dynamic Women of the Bible, Katie Luther, Parade of Faith, Daughters of the Church, and more titles. " 'Our Church Mothers' gives readers a chance to "meet" and appreciate seven faithful women whose service to the people of God spans over three millennia. Author Gwen Ehrenborg's choice to introduce us to them by composing letters from them based on serious historical research makes her book not only pleasurable but also inspiring. It deserves wide readership." E. CALVIN BEISNER, PH.D. Founder and National Spokesman for The Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation; Christian Scholar, Apologist, Seminary Professor, Author, Editor " 'Our Church Mothers' is a significant read that I highly recommend. Rev. Gwen, as author, has an engaging way of writing. I want her to write about more women so that I might be edified by their stories." BISHOP MARY ANN SWENSON, United Methodist Church

Book excerpt: When 19-year-old Jennifer Maggio found herself pregnant...for the fourth time...she was completely lost-lost in a tragedy wrought by years of sexual abuse, homelessness, and poverty. What she didn't know at the time was that she was the main character in a story that God would one day use to inspire, encourage, and challenge thousands of people just like her...and some whose stories were very different from hers. From that deep valley Jennifer rose to the summit of Corporate America-only to leave it all behind to minister to single moms. In The Church and the Single Mom Jennifer provides a road map for those who, like her, look out at the nearly 17 million single moms in the U.S. alone, many of whom are drowning in financial struggles, parenting woes, and emotional.
