Book Synopsis Shared Struggles by : Ann F. Schrooten
Download or read book Shared Struggles written by Ann F. Schrooten and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells true and poignant stories from both sides of the physician-patient/parent relationship and provides a unique glimpse into how parents and physicians think, feel, and interact. The stories are grouped under four sections: Hope, Compassion, Communication, and Trust. Each section includes stories contributed by parents from all across the United States and by pediatricians practicing at many of the best children’s hospitals throughout the country. The parents tell of interactions with physicians that had a significant impact on them and their child and offer context and insight that promote empathy and reflection. The physicians tell of interactions with patients and families that served as learning moments in their career and promote the humanization of medicine and show there is more to a physician beyond their scientific knowledge and white coat. The stories are edited by Barry P. Markovitz - a pediatrician specializing in critical care medicine who has been in practice for more than 20 years and by Ann F. Schrooten - the parent of a child born with a chronic complex condition who has more than 15 years of experience interacting with pediatric subspecialists and other healthcare professionals who cared for her son. The editors have written commentaries to the stories to provide an independent perspective on the events and messages conveyed and to encourage reflection, inquiry, and discussion. In addition to being a valuable resource for pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists, nurses and other healthcare professionals, the book will also appeal to families of children living with complex medical conditions because it shares physician encounters and behaviors many have experienced in the care of their own children. By giving a voice to both parents and physicians, the goal is to create a bridge to better understanding that can improve communication, minimize conflicts, and foster trust and compassion among physicians, patients, and families.

Download or read book The Crazy, Wonderful Things Kids Say written by Arnold L. Tanis and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hey, doctor, I want to tell you something!" For 54 years, kids have shared with pediatrician Arnold Tanis stories, questions, and bold pronouncements about their childhood worlds. In between treating them, the good doctor wrote many of them down. Three generations of patients offer memorable and downright funny observations and opinions about all sorts of things: shots, school, their brothers and sisters, growing up, and even Dr. Tanis himself and whether he can sing as well as he thinks he does. The parents also chime in, both to complain about all their kids put them through and to celebrate how well they eventually turn out. A tireless, lifelong advocate of child safety, Dr. Tanis's impact on his patients and their families spans decades. This book is a testament to his career and a memorable glimpse of the warm and sometimes crazy world of a singing pediatrician.

Book Synopsis Miracles and Other Unusual Medical Experiences by : Byron Oberst M.D.
Download or read book Miracles and Other Unusual Medical Experiences written by Byron Oberst M.D. and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the many diverse experiences of a very active pediatrician from 1943 to 1988. This story begins when he was in medical school in 1943 and ends with his retirement thirty-seven years later in 1988. It includes post retirement stints as a Medical Director for a medical software company and being the Medical Director for a commercial plasma collecting center. He vividly describes many different and unusual medical cases including two true Miracles. One occurred in 1952 during the horrendous polio epidemic, Connie and the other one in the 1970s, Thumbelina. These Miracles are described vivid detail with all of their agonizing twists and turns. Neither patient should have survived with their many complications and circumstances, but with Gods grace they did. This book contains unusual and different exotic medical encounters when the author was in Japan while in the Army Medical Corps in 1949-1950. This book details why and how he had to become a pseudo-specialist in several fields in his early and middle practice years. There were few, if any, trained specialists during those early years. Dr. Oberst portrays a full and productive professional life in many ways which are described in this tome. This book is a pleasant and interesting read for everyone to enjoy. It contains humor, vivid descriptions, happiness, agonies, and pathos.

Download or read book Birth Day written by Mark Sloan (M.D.) and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I delivered twenty babies in the summer of 1977. I was hardly more than a baby myself, just turned twenty-four and starting my third year of medical school.” –from Birth Day So began Mark Sloan’s three-decades-long exploration of the wonders and oddities of human childbirth. Pediatrician, husband, and father, the author has attended nearly three thousand births since that long-ago summer, encountering everything from routine deliveries to tense labor-room dramas. In Birth Day, Sloan draws on his personal and professional experience to weave the strands of memoir, history, science, and culture into a fascinating–and often funny–tapestry of this fundamental human passage. Birth Day takes the reader on a remarkable journey, from the dawn of human history to the quiet efficiency of a modern operating room; from Aristotle and Julius Caesar to a trailblazing, cross-dressing British army surgeon; from a recent past filled with the horrors of childbirth gone wrong to a present day, in which every pregnancy is expected to end happily. Some of Birth Day’s many topics include • The evolution of human childbirth–or, why do gorillas have it so easy? • The first five minutes of life–scuba divers, astronauts, and the amazing adaptations that transform a fetus into an air-breathing, out-in-the-world baby • Cesarean section–a look at its origins, its future, and how it came to be the most frequently performed operation in American hospitals • Pain and politics–the age-old quest for painless childbirth, starring Adam and Eve, Queen Victoria, a nineteenth-century medical brawl, and the rise of today’s “epidural monoculture” • Daddies–raging paternal hormones, hidden anxieties, and the emotional evolution of men (including the author, his father, and grandfather) as they approach fatherhood • The five senses at birth–does light enter the womb? how loud is it in there? what is a newborn baby searching for with those first anxious glances? • A tour of the newborn body–springy skulls, hairy ears, innies and outies, the advantages (and disadvantages) of looking like your father, and why the United States is one of the world’s most circumcised nations Delightfully instructive and entertaining, Birth Dayoffers a fresh, sometimes irreverent take on a universally familiar topic. Warm, reassuring, and packed with stories from the author’s work and life, this unique book is one pediatrician’s meditation on the hiding-in-plain-sight marvels of human birth.
