Book excerpt: You have one life. One life. That's all, at least here on Earth. Every facet of who you are and how you live your life is filtered through your internal sense of self: how worthy you believe you are, the value you place on yourself as a human being. How you feel about yourself is the lens through which you view everything in your life. Your energy, attitude, health, sexuality, resilience, ability to focus, sleep, and every relationship and interaction is impacted by how you feel in your innermost core being. You may not know what your purpose is yet, but we each have one. We all have something to contribute to the grand scheme of things. But first, you must believe in yourself, feel at peace with who you are, stop oppressing your own abilities. Learning to like who you are -- LOVE who you are -- is worth striving for, because it will change your life. Having gone through the process of uncovering, discovering, and recovering my own self-worth, I will walk you through the steps as we move through the sections of A Human Mosaic. Humans are designed to be lifelong learners when we operate at our optimum level. It is never too late to change. Live the healthiest, most fulfilling life possible by knowing that your life matters.

Book excerpt: The book Mosaic of Life: A Collection of Poems is a journey of celebrating experiences and remembered encounters with persons at different stages of life. The thirty-seven literary compositions reflect human concerns toward growing conflicts that are manifestations of human activities and natural calamities. Inner quest for peace and harmony are part of the collections. The book is a collection of thirty-seven poems transcribing cherished experiences of my life. The thoughts woven under each exposition explore the depth of human emotions and attempt to provide a healing touch to turmoil and conflicts affecting human life. Themes that form part of the Mosaic of Life celebrate the strength of womanhood, nurture memories of bygone days, and reflect sensitivity towards gender, persons with disability, and transgender people. Issues and concerns for marginalized sectors of our society and conservation of environment are also penned as for food for thought. Exploring multiple pathways for leading a quality and meaningful life for a better tomorrow are other important additions. It is hoped that poetry lovers will enjoy each poem and unravel the inner meaning conveyed for understanding and appreciating the context in which they are composed.

Book excerpt: With profound implications for our most foundational assumptions about gender, Gender Mosaic explains why there is no such thing as a male or female brain. For generations, we've been taught that women and men differ in profound and important ways. Women are more sensitive and emotional, whereas men are more aggressive and sexual, because this or that region in the brains of women is smaller or larger than in men, or because they have more or less of this or that hormone. This story seems to provide us with a neat biological explanation for much of what we encounter in day-to-day life. But is it true? According to neuroscientist Daphna Joel, it's not. And in Gender Mosaic, she sets forth a bold and compelling argument that debunks the notion of female and male brains. Drawing on the latest scientific evidence, including the groundbreaking results of her own studies, Dr. Joel explains that every human brain is a unique mixture -- or mosaic -- of "male" and "female" features, and that these mosaics don't map neatly into two categories. With urgent practical implications for the way we understand ourselves and the world around us, Gender Mosaic is a fascinating look at the science of gender, sex and the brain, and at how freeing ourselves from the gender binary can help us all reach our full human potential.

Book excerpt: Life -- personally and professionally -- is lived to the fullest as a mosaic, encompassing a rich and complex set of diverse experiences that provide purpose, meaning, happiness, and success. Yet, the pressures of modern society push us toward narrower focus and deeper specialization in our lives and careers. Our pursuit of specific expertise risks us becoming isolated from those different from us; our lack of shared experience fosters suspicion and conflict. Today we have businesspeople and government officials who persistently distrust and demonize each other; a fortunate swath of society with professional and financial security, increasingly isolated from those left behind; and community leaders who struggle to relate to and connect with the communities they serve. In every walk of life we have allowed ourselves to be pushed into self-defining cocoons from which it is difficult to break out. Nick Lovegrove's compelling vision provides the way out of this contemporary trap. He supplies vivid portraits of those who get it right (such as Paul Farmer, the physician whose broad and imaginative choices bring health and hope to the world's poorest people) and those who get it deeply wrong (such as Jeffrey Skilling, the former CEO of Enron) and connects their experiences with a blueprint of six skills -- a moral compass, transferrable skills, contextual intelligence, prepared mind, intellectual thread, and extended network. The Mosaic Principle will help you to succeed in an ever-changing, more complex, and diverse world, and build a more remarkable and fulfilling life.

Book excerpt: Too many times, we read books, articles, or papers on Christianity, and we are left to wonder where the author is coming from or what his approach is for interpreting scripture. So right here, at the start, I would like to declare my method of interpretation and on which translation of the scripture I rest. First, I take the Word of God (scriptures) to be infallible, inerrant, and without contradiction. I believe that God said what he meant and meant what he said, and it is our task and responsibility to rightly divide the Word of truth. On all matters of life and spirit, the scripture is the final authority; in saying this, the scripture will be the primary source material for the whole of this paper. When speaking of the scripture, I am referring to the authorized version 1611. I believe this is the preserved Word of God for the English-speaking people. I realize this is another hotly debated topic, and we do not have the time or the space to debate it here, as this would be a distraction from the main topic. I will say though, outside of textual criticisms, biblical preservation, manuscript evidence, dynamic or formal equivalence translation, and a host other topics in this debate, it all comes down to thiswho is the final authority? We as Christians need to take a stand, we need to pick a version or translation that we believe is the Word of God and say, Thus saith the Word of God. If we do not, we set ourselves up as the final authority and not God; we dont like how one version says something, so we go to another and another until we find one that says what we want or that proves our point. This is not being transformed by the Word of God but making the Word of God conform to us and our biases. It is a matter of faith.

Book excerpt: This publication is engaged in issues, trends, and themes depicted on mosaic pavements discovered in Israel, the Gaza Strip and Petra (the provinces of ancient Palaestina Prima, Secunda and Tertia) with comparable floors in Jordan (Arabia). The majority of the mosaic pavements discussed in this study are dated to the 4th-8th centuries CE. Mosaic pavements were the normal medium for decorating the floors of synagogues, churches, monasteries, and chapels, as well as public and private buildings. Inscriptions found on many of the pavements commemorate the donors, refer to the artists, and sometimes date the mosaics. The ornamentation of the mosaics in this region is remarkable, rich, and varied in its themes and provides many insights into the contemporary artistic and social cultures.

Book excerpt: Firsthand sources are brought together to illuminate the diversity of American history in a unique way—by sharing the perspectives of people of color who participated in landmark events. This invaluable, four-volume compilation is a comprehensive source of documents that give voice to those who comprise the American mosaic, illustrating the experiences of racial and ethnic minorities in the United States. Each volume focuses on a major racial/ethnic group: African Americans, American Indians, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and Latinos. Documents chosen by the editors for their utility and relevance to popular areas of study are organized into chronological periods from historical to contemporary. The collection includes eyewitness accounts, legislation, speeches, and interviews. Together, they tell the story of America's diverse population and enable readers to explore historical concepts and contexts from multiple viewpoints. Introductions for each volume and primary document provide background and history that help students understand and critique the material. The work also features a useful primary document guide, bibliographies, and indices to aid teachers, librarians, and students in class work and research.
