Download or read book The Management of Disorders of the Child’s Cervical Spine written by Daniel J. Hedequist and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive yet practical, this book is the first of its kind to focus exclusively on both major and minor conditions affecting the pediatric cervical spine. Written by eminent orthopedic and spinal surgeons, it provides a systematic approach based on traditional categories: anatomy, pathology, imaging, and both surgical and non-surgical treatment strategies. Utilizing the most up-to-date evidence, the subject is approached in three main sections. The basic science of the pediatric cervical spine – anatomy, biomechanics, imaging and diagnostic techniques – is covered in part I. The clinical aspects of pediatric cervical spine disorders are discussed in part II, including trauma, inflammatory conditions, infections, tumors, congenital anomalies and others. The medical and surgical treatment of these disorders comprises part III, presenting conservative techniques such as immobilization and surgical techniques such as arthrodesis. Complications and other related pediatric cervical conditions are also covered in this last section. Written by an international panel of experts and skillfully edited by leaders in the field, The Management of Children's Cervical Spine Disorders is a unique and definitive resource for pediatric orthopedic spine surgeons, neurologists and all medical professionals treating these delicate conditions.

Book excerpt: In this landmark book the renowned scholar of religion Mircea Eliade lays the groundwork for a Western understanding of Yoga, exploring how its guiding principle, that of freedom, involves remaining in the world without letting oneself be exhausted by such "conditionings" as time and history. Drawing on years of study and experience in India, Eliade provides a comprehensive survey of Yoga in theory and practice from its earliest foreshadowings in the Vedas through the twentieth century. The subjects discussed include Patañjali, author of the Yoga-sutras; yogic techniques, such as concentration "on a Single Point," postures, and respiratory discipline; and Yoga in relation to Brahmanism, Buddhism, Tantrism, Oriental alchemy, mystical erotism, and shamanism.

Book Synopsis Resilience in Aging by : Barbara Resnick
Download or read book Resilience in Aging written by Barbara Resnick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-14 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The many significant technological and medical advances of the 21st century cannot overcome the escalating risk posed to older adults by such stressors as pain, weakness, fatigue, depression, anxiety, memory and other cognitive deficits, hearing loss, visual impairment, isolation, marginalization, and physical and mental illness. In order to overcome these and other challenges, and to maintain as high a quality of life as possible, older adults and the professionals who treat them need to promote and develop the capacity for resilience, which is innate in all of us to some degree. The purpose of this book is to provide the current scientific theory, clinical guidelines, and real-world interventions with regard to resilience as a clinical tool. To that end, the book addresses such issues as concepts and operationalization of resilience; relevance of resilience to successful aging; impact of personality and genetics on resilience; relationship between resilience and motivation; relationship between resilience and survival; promoting resilience in long-term care; and the lifespan approach to resilience. By addressing ways in which the hypothetical and theoretical concepts of resilience can be applied in geriatric practice, Resilience in Aging provides inroads to the current knowledge and practice of resilience from the perspectives of physiology, psychology, culture, creativity, and economics. In addition, the book considers the impact of resilience on critical aspects of life for older adults such as policy issues (e.g., nursing home policies, Medicare guidelines), health and wellness, motivation, spirituality, and survival. Following these discussions, the book focuses on interventions that increase resilience. The intervention chapters include case studies and are intended to be useful at the clinical level. The book concludes with a discussion of future directions in optimizing resilience in the elderly and the importance of a lifespan approach to aging.
