Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morphological and Systematic Studies on the Cheilostomatous Bryozoa The first Plates to this work were prepared in the year 1901, which will ex plain why a number of the generic names used on the Plates have later been replaced by others on the accompanying explanations. In some cases, namely, I have often been obliged to name the figures given on a Plate at a period when I was not yet certain to what genus a given species should be referred, and I have therefore been obliged provisionally to use the earlier given generic name; in other cases I have later been obliged to use another generic name, because it had been shown in the interval that an older had the priority. In many cases I have followed the view of the priority question expressed by the Rev. A. M. Norman in his notes on the Natural History of East Finmark Polyzoa. In some few cases it has also been necessary to alter the specific name. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Species Diversity of Animals in Japan by : Masaharu Motokawa
Download or read book Species Diversity of Animals in Japan written by Masaharu Motokawa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-26 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the status quo of the knowledge about the biodiversity in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine animals that live in Japan. Consisting of some 6,800 islands that are arrayed for approximately 3,500 km from north to south, the Japanese archipelago has a complex history in a paleogeographic formation process over time and harbors rich flora and fauna. This work will contribute to establishing a general biogeographic theory in archipelagoes around continental shelves. Facing the ongoing extinction crisis, one of the most important tasks for our generation is to bequeath this precious natural heritage to future generations. As the first step toward this goal, a species list has been compiled through solid, steady alpha-taxonomic work in each taxon. Furthermore, the phylogeography and population genetic structure for each species is elucidated for deeper understanding of the local fauna, the scientific results of which should be the basis for establishing conservation policies and strategies. Also the problem of alien or introduced species is investigated as another threat to the native fauna. Each of the 27 chapters is written by the most active specialist leading the field, thus readers can acquire up-to-date knowledge of the animal species diversity and their formation process of Japanese animals in the most comprehensive form available. This book is recommended for researchers and students who are interested in species diversity, biogeography, and phylogeography.
Book Synopsis Australian Bryozoa Volume 2 by : Haylee Weaver
Download or read book Australian Bryozoa Volume 2 written by Haylee Weaver and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2018-07-01 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bryozoans are aquatic animals that form colonies of connected individuals. They take a variety of forms: some are bushy and moss-like, some are flat and encrusting and others resemble lace. Bryozoans are mostly marine, with species found in all oceans from sublittoral to abyssal depths, but freshwater species also exist. Some bryozoans are of concern as marine-fouling organisms and invasive species, while others show promise as sources of anticancer, antiviral and antifouling substances. Written by experts in the field, Australian Bryozoa Volume 2: Taxonomy of Australian Families is the second of two volumes describing Australia’s 1200 known species of bryozoans, the richest diversity of bryozoans of any country in the world. It contains detailed taxonomic data and illustrated family-level treatments, which can be used to identify specimens. It provides an authoritative reference for biology students, academics and others interested in marine biology.
Book Synopsis Bryozoan Paleobiology by : Paul D. Taylor
Download or read book Bryozoan Paleobiology written by Paul D. Taylor and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-07-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bryozoa are among the most abundant yet least understood of phyla in the fossil record. These exclusively colonial animals can be traced back to the Ordovician as fossils and are common elements of sediments deposited in shallow marine environments. On occasion their calcareous skeletons are sufficiently numerous to produce bryozoan limestones. The potential of bryozoans in facies analysis, and their use in macroevolutionary studies, have both been widely recognised, but to date have been incompletely exploited. Bryozoan Paleobiology brings together the scattered research on living and fossil bryozoans in broad and profusely illustrated overview that will help students and researchers alike in understanding this fascinating group of animals. Beginning with the basics of bryozoan morphology, ecology and classification, the book progresses from the smallest scale of skeletal ultrastructure, to the largest of bryozoan distributions in time and space. On the way, topics such as the origin of zooidal polymorphism and macroevolutionary trends in colony forms are covered. Case studies illuminate these topics, and areas in which further research is particularly required are highlighted.

This book was released on 2003-11-30 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook on biofilms combines knowledge on sub-aquatic and sub-aerial biofilms and their products (stromatolites, oolites, ore, petroleum and gas deposits). It describes how formation and degradation of minerals and rocks is achieved through biofilm formation on and in sediments, soils and rocks. Methods of study, examples of Precambrian biofilms of an early Earth as well as the most recent examples of desert rock biofilms are treated in this integrative book on biofilms, microbial mats and stromatolites.

Book Synopsis The Future of Coral Reefs Subject to Rapid Climate Change: Lessons from Natural Extreme Environments by : Emma F. Camp
Download or read book The Future of Coral Reefs Subject to Rapid Climate Change: Lessons from Natural Extreme Environments written by Emma F. Camp and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examination of corals and reef-associated organisms which endure in extreme coral reef environments is challenging our understanding of the conditions that organisms can survive under. By studying individuals naturally adapted to unfavorable conditions, we begin to better understand the important traits required to survive rapid environmental and climate change. This Research Topic, comprising reviews, and original research articles, demonstrates the current state of knowledge regarding the diversity of extreme coral habitats, the species that have been studied, and the knowledge to-date on the mechanisms, traits and trade-offs that have facilitated survival.
Book Synopsis Biology of Bryozoans by : Robert M. Woollacott
Download or read book Biology of Bryozoans written by Robert M. Woollacott and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology of Bryozoans covers some of the unusual and even unique systems and aspects of bryozoans. The book further tackles the aging process in bryozoans; the bryozoan nervous system; and taxes and tropisms of bryozoans. The text also looks into the life strategies of bryozoans; the population genetics of bryozoans; and the adaptive model for the evolution of the ectoproct life cycle. Zoologists, marine biologists, and students taking related courses will find the book invaluable.

Book Synopsis Biological Invasions in Changing Ecosystems by : João Canning-Clode
Download or read book Biological Invasions in Changing Ecosystems written by João Canning-Clode and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When organisms are deliberately or accidentally introduced into a new ecosystem a biological invasion may take place. These so-called ‘invasive species’ may establish, spread and ecologically alter the invaded community. Biological invasions by animals, plants, pathogens or vectors are one of the greatest environmental and economic threats and, along with habitat destruction, a leading cause of global biodiversity loss. In this book, more than 50 worldwide invasion scientists cover our current understanding of biological invasions, its impacts, patterns and mechanisms in both aquatic and terrestrial systems.
