Book excerpt: O presente trabalho de pesquisa tem por objetivo apresentar a descricao morfologica do estagio juvenil de 24 especies florestais de uma floresta com Araucaria, localizada a 25 20' e 49 14' W, no municipio de Colombo, Parana, em area pertencente a URPFCS - EMBRAPA. No periodo de outubro de 1981 a julho de 1982, foram realizadas visitas semanais a floresta para a obtencao de sementes. Para cada especie em frutificacao forma escolhidas cinco arvores para a coleta de frutos, cujos as sementes foram beneficiadas, germinadas e repicadas em viveiro para a producao de mudas. No acompanhamento de crescimento em viveiro para a producao de mudas. No acompanhamento do crescimento em viveiro foram determinados dois estagios para a descricao: 1) quando o primeiro par de protofilos atingiu desenvolvimento completo, coicidindo, na maioria das especie, com exaustao dos cotiledones; 2) quando os protofilos atingiram um desenvolvimento diferenciado do estagio anterior. As ilustracaoes e descricoes foram executadas observando-se caracteristicas de raiz, colo, hipocolito, cotoledones, epicotilo, protofilos, internodios e caracteristicas de cerscimento em viveiro. Uma tabela com numeros e dimensoes minimas de crescimento em viveiro. Uma tabela com numeros e dimensoes minimas, medias e maximas complementa cadas descricao. Com as caracteristicas observadas, foi possivel a construção de chaves dicotomicas para identificacao das plantulas e mudas separadamente. Da realizacao deste trabalho, podem ser saleintados os seguintes aspectos: a) a escassez de informacoes, na literatura brasileira, sobre sementes e mudas de especies florestais nativas; b) e viavel a aplicacao da metodologia utilizada em outras regioes; c) ao se projetar semelhante, estudar a possibilidade do desenvolvimento de pesquisas conjuntas utilizando o mesmo material.

The forests grow in areas that are annually flooded by large rivers during mean periods of up to 8 months and at depths of up to 10 m. Despite this severe stress, these forests consist of over 1,000 species and are by far the most species-rich floodplain forests worldwide. The trees show a broad range of morphological, anatomical, physiological, and phenological adaptations that enable them not only to survive the adverse environmental conditions, but also to produce large amounts of biomass when the nutrient levels in water and soils are sufficiently high. This is the case in the floodplains of white-water rivers, which are used for fisheries, agriculture, and cattle-ranching but which also have a high potential for the production of timber and non-timber products, when adequately managed. Latest research on ecophysiology gives insight how tree species adapt to the oscillating flood-pulse focusing on their photosynthesis, respiration, sap flow, biochemistry, phenology, wood and leave anatomy, root morphology and functioning, fruit chemistry, seed germination, seedling establishment, nitrogen fixation and genetic variability. Based on tree ages, lifetime growth rates and net primary production, new concepts are developed to improve the sustainability of traditional forest managements in the background of an integrated natural resource management.
