Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a mostly true story of Sassi, a mostly Yellow Lab, who was abandoned at a shelter as a tiny puppy. She was adopted by an airline pilot named Mark, but called Dad, and was raised by him and his live-in mother, Pat, known as Gramma. Recording Sassi's silent thoughts and words on her lucky life via "unique transference" (it's a secret!), Gramma wrote the book from Sassi's perspective.Have you ever walked through a dog shelter? If so, you saw the dogs rush to the front of their cages, bark, cry, wag their tails, and look at you with soulful eyes, hoping you will "please choose me?" Did you wonder about their stories? Sassi shares hers as a heartening example of the happiness to be found by homeless rescues adopted into welcoming forever homes.Eight-year-old Sassi learned very early that with her peppy personality, loving nature, and funny antics, she could make people smile, laugh, and feel good. That became her mission. For instance, as a trained and certified therapy dog, Sassi visits and entertains seniors in an assisted living home. She gives them high-fives. They give her big smiles. Her best buddy is a tennis ball she carries constantly, begging anyone and everyone to play catch. Her favorite times are fishing with Dad on his boat, swimming in Tampa Bay, walking with Gramma, watching TV, playing with her treasure trove of toys, and just hanging out with her family.Gramma tells Sassi about God and how blessed she is to enjoy such a good life. Sassi knows and is so thankful. For all rescued dogs in shelters and strays still "out there" trying to survive and be saved, Sassi prays all will get second chances for a happy life with loving humans, just like she did.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of the beloved New York Times bestsellers Marley and Me and Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love, a charming, inspirational memoir about empathy, resilience, kindness, and an adorable deaf blind pink dog. When Connecticut veterinarian Melissa Shapiro gets a call about a tiny deaf blind puppy rescued from a hoarding situation in need of fostering, she doesn’t hesitate to say, “yes.” Little does she know how that decision will transform her, her family, and legions of admirers destined to embrace the saga of the indomitable pink pup. One of the most anxious dogs Melissa had ever encountered, the traumatized Piglet weighed under two pounds upon his welcome into the Shapiro household—which included Melissa’s husband Warren and their three college-aged kids, plus six other rescued dogs. After weeks of reassurance, and lots of love, Piglet connected, gained confidence, and his extraordinary spirit emerged. Melissa soon forged a powerful bond with Piglet, allowing the two to communicate without sound or visual cues. Two months later, when the day arrived to say good-bye to the now dashing, six-pound pink boy dog with the larger than life spirit, Melissa faced a heart-wrenching decision. Could she hand him over to someone willing to give Piglet the full-time attention he required or could she adapt her schedule and her household to make a permanent place for him in her life and work? Of course, the answer was simple: love would find a way. Curious, engaged, and incredibly eager to learn, Piglet quickly became part of the family. What started out as a few simple Facebook posts of Piglet and his pack rapidly evolved into a global celebration of Piglet’s infectiously positive mindset. Piglet: The Unexpected Story of a Deaf, Blind, Pink Puppy and His Family fully illustrates this heartwarming story of one special little puppy with a purpose to teach the power of empathy, love, and kindness.

Book excerpt: “No Dog Should Die Alone” was the attention-grabbing — and heart-stirring — headline of journalist Laura T. Coffey’s TODAY show website story about photographer Lori Fusaro’s work with senior shelter pets. While generally calm, easy, and already house-trained, these animals often represent the highest-risk population at shelters. With gorgeous, joyful photographs and sweet, funny, true tales of “old dogs learning new tricks,” Coffey and Fusaro show that adopting a senior can be even more rewarding than choosing a younger dog. You’ll meet endearing elders like Marnie, the irresistible shih tzu who has posed for selfies with Tina Fey, James Franco, and Betty White; Remy, a soulful nine-year-old dog adopted by elderly nuns; George Clooney’s cocker spaniel, Einstein; and Bretagne, the last known surviving search dog from Ground Zero. They may be slower moving and a tad less exuberant than puppies, but these pooches prove that adopting a senior brings immeasurable joy, earnest devotion, and unconditional love.

Book excerpt: The hugely illuminating story of how a popular breed of dog became the most demonized and supposedly the most dangerous of dogs—and what role humans have played in the transformation. When Bronwen Dickey brought her new dog home, she saw no traces of the infamous viciousness in her affectionate, timid pit bull. Which made her wonder: How had the breed—beloved by Teddy Roosevelt, Helen Keller, and Hollywood’s “Little Rascals”—come to be known as a brutal fighter? Her search for answers takes her from nineteenth-century New York City dogfighting pits—the cruelty of which drew the attention of the recently formed ASPCA—to early twentieth‑century movie sets, where pit bulls cavorted with Fatty Arbuckle and Buster Keaton; from the battlefields of Gettysburg and the Marne, where pit bulls earned presidential recognition, to desolate urban neighborhoods where the dogs were loved, prized—and sometimes brutalized. Whether through love or fear, hatred or devotion, humans are bound to the history of the pit bull. With unfailing thoughtfulness, compassion, and a firm grasp of scientific fact, Dickey offers us a clear-eyed portrait of this extraordinary breed, and an insightful view of Americans’ relationship with their dogs.

In just a few days, she'd been abducted from her spoiled-little-rich-girl existence and then rescued—maybe—by a man who might be every bit as dangerous as her kidnappers…. All she really knew about Ryan Mulvaney was that he wasn't the innocent bystander he claimed to be. There was nothing innocent about this man. But he certainly had a way of making high-speed car chases, and even the occasional burst of gunfire, downright exciting…. And maybe, when all this was over—if they were still alive—she's show him a whole different kind of excitement….

It explores through anecdote, observation, and scientific research, the complexity and depth of the role that pets play in our lives. Every story in the book brings an unrecognized benefit of adopting homeless animals to the forefront of the rescue conversation. In a nation plagued by illnesses--16 million adults suffer from depression, 29 million have diabetes, 8 million in any given year have PTSD, and nearly 40% are obese--rescue pets can help: 60% of doctors said they prescribe pet adoption and a staggering 97% believe that pet ownership provides health benefits. For people in chronic emotional, physical, or spiritual pain, adopting an animal can transform, and even save, their lives. Each story in the book takes a deep dive into one potent aspect of animal adoption, told through the lens of people's personal experiences with their rescued pets and the science that backs up the results. This book will resonate with readers hungering for stories of healing and redemption.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A universal need of all warm blooded mammals is: to love and be loved (in return). Paradoxically, in our modern, fast paced, society, it is a need which often goes unfulfilled. This is attested to/evinced by data on percentages of the population living alone and unattached: 50% alone, in Canada, where I live in a retirement community. Before industrial society came into being, in days of feudalism, the problem situation facing humanity was characterized/portrayed as being one of battles between rival lords of manors, vying for supremacy, and the exploits of knight errant employed in their service. The best simile/metaphor for this type of fighting in feudal society, was seen to be that of an "obstacle course", where knight errantry often involved knights in white armor taking on first, one opposing knight in black armor, and then another, and then another in a jousting match on a field of battle. Thus the obstacle course analogy: successful knights would overcome all obstacles, i.e. all rival knights in the way of a victory for their lord of the manor. Each knight would be identified by distinctive insignia/coat of arms that was unique to his lord, that way each knight could tell friends from foes. This was an exciting but dangerous life, and knights were the heroes of the story, as in the Legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, or in John Bunyan's Christian book, Pilgrim's Progress. Contrast this with the metaphor for life and living, under modern industrial society, where there is a widespread feeling of isolation even in the midst of many. What is the reason for this feeling of isolation and alienation? Could it be that it stems from the nature of work or the workplace (interacting alone with a computer screen) - or the rules and laws governing interpersonal relations of people living in communities (a don't touch me society)? - or, sometimes, over-reliance on "passive" forms of entertainment which connects people to the medium, but disconnects people from each other? Is there any metaphor for the new problem situation facing people in our modern, industrial society, namely: alone and lonely? You may have heard of the story of the famous shipwrecked sailor, Robinson Crusoe (book by Daniel Defoe), marooned all by himself, on an uncharted desert island? Who made the best of his situation by building things to satisfy all his physical economic needs? Much like we have built an economy that satisfies all our physical needs. Crusoe, did not stop there, he went on to satisfy his spiritual needs, by noting all the marvels of nature, and narrow escapes from storms, that made him believe that providence was on his side, converting him to Christianity. Then, providence did him another good turn. A cannibal, by the name of Man Friday, was fortuitously left on the island, by an accident of fate, and Robinson, now had a companion, whom he educated into Christianity from his heathen/uncivilized ways. The functional role that Man Friday fulfilled for Robinson - his best friend - in many ways bears a resemblance to the the "role" of pets - especially that most loyal of pets, the dog - play as friends for people, in isolated modern society. If Man Friday was Robinson Crusoe's loyal best friend, then could we not with justification, say, that for people, esp. isolated ones, dogs likewise serve as man's best friends and loyal companions? Thus our need to love and be loved, even when we are denied "the real thing" - a person to call our own - has a way of "going underground" and finding the next best substitute for the real thing - which oftener than not - turns out to be a beloved pet (s). Dog may not be quite as desirable as a human partner, but given that so many people have no human partners, dog has, in effect, become: man's best friend! It is to be hoped that we humans reciprocate by also being: dog's best friend! Knowing that genuine love is always a two-way street!
