Book Synopsis Young Language Learners' Motivation and Attitudes by : Sybille Heinzmann
Download or read book Young Language Learners' Motivation and Attitudes written by Sybille Heinzmann and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking three different perspectives, this book looks at primary school children's language learning motivation and language attitudes. In adopting a longitudinal perspective, the book fills a research gap and provides a macro-level analysis of motivational development over time. It reveals a surprising amount of stability in primary school children's motivational and attitudinal development. The comparative perspective looks at the learners' affective dispositions with regard to English (theorized as a 'global language') and French (theorized as a 'national language'). The comparisons between global language and national language are relevant across the world, especially in situations where instruction in languages other than English struggles to get attention. The results reveal sizeable differences between the two languages, with children being substantially more motivated to learn English than to learn French. Finally, the explanatory section identifies key antecedents of the learners' motivational and attitudinal dispositions - and thereby opens up paths for intervention relevant for those working in the field of language instruction.

Book Synopsis The Most Arrogant Man in France by : Petra ten-Doesschate Chu
Download or read book The Most Arrogant Man in France written by Petra ten-Doesschate Chu and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2007-04 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern artist strives to be independent of the public's taste--and yet depends on the public for a living. Petra Chu argues that the French Realist Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) understood this dilemma perhaps better than any painter before him. In The Most Arrogant Man in France, the first comprehensive reinterpretation of Courbet in a generation, Chu tells the fascinating story of how, in the initial age of mass media and popular high art, this important artist managed to achieve an unprecedented measure of artistic and financial independence by promoting his work and himself through the popular press. The Courbet who emerges in Chu's account is a sophisticated artist and entrepreneur who understood that the modern artist must sell--and not only make--his art. Responding to this reality, Courbet found new ways to "package," exhibit, and publicize his work and himself. Chu shows that Courbet was one of the first artists to recognize and take advantage of the publicity potential of newspapers, using them to create acceptance of his work and to spread an image of himself as a radical outsider. Courbet introduced the independent show by displaying his art in popular venues outside the Salon, and he courted new audiences, including women. And for a time Courbet succeeded, achieving a rare freedom for a nineteenth-century French artist. If his strategy eventually backfired and he was forced into exile, his pioneering vision of the artist's career in the modern world nevertheless makes him an intriguing forerunner to all later media-savvy artists.

The victorious British garrison is burdened with repairing a bombed city, weakened defenses and a local population who despise their presence. The threat of a French counterattack looms, yet running out of fire wood is a far more serious fate. Trapped in a city with no hope, no food and an enemy bent on liberating it from British hands. Trapped by snow and ice in one of the most inhospitable places on earth and trapped by his responsibilities. Jacob prays for a quick end to the war so he can finally return home with his family.
