Book excerpt: Metal-Ammonia Solutions contains the proceedings of an International Conference on the Nature of Metal-Ammonia Solutions Colloque Weyl II held at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, on June 15-19, 1969. The papers explore the nature of metal-ammonia solutions and cover topics ranging from the dilemma of metal-ammonia models to the magnetic properties of metal-ammonia solutions, the reactions of such solutions, and solid metal-ammonia compounds. This monograph is comprised of 39 chapters and begins with an overview of models for the concentration dependence of the properties of dilute metal-ammonia solutions. The discussion then turns to a continuous dielectric model for the solvated dielectron in dielectric media; elementary electronic excitations in insulating liquids; and magnetic properties of metal-ammonia solutions. The chapters that follow focus on the kinetics of the reaction between sodium and ethanol in liquid ammonia; electrons trapped in solids; metal-nonmetal transition and phase separation; and optical spectra of alkali metal-ammonia solutions. This text will be a valuable resource for chemists and chemistry students.

Book excerpt: Dilute solutions of the alkali metals in liquid ammonia are assumed to consist of the following constituents: M(+), the solvated metal cation; S, the solvent; M( - ), the solvated metal anion; S( - ), the solvent anion (solvated electron); the solvated ion-pairs M(+). M( - ) and M(+). S( - ). The presence of the solvated metal anion M( - ) is justified on the basis of the observed existence of stable alkali metal anions in the gas phase. The absence of solvated metal M, usually assumed to be a constituent of these solutions, is justified in part by a thermodynamic estimate of its instability with respect to disproportionation to yield the solvated cation and solvated anion of the metal; the optical and electrical properties of condensed layers of mixtures of ammonia and the alkali metals at very low temperatures favor this view. The solvated solvent anion S( - ) is favored as a model for the solvated electron on the basis of Knight shift data for the spin density on N-14, which is extremely close in value to that of sodium, with which ammonia is isoelectronic. These species are assumed to be in equilibrium via M(+) + 2S( - ) = M( - ) + 2S and M(+) + A( - ) = M(+) . A( - ), where A( - ) is either M( - ) or S( - ). For simplicity, the activity coefficient of each species is assumed to be given by the extended theory of Debye and Huckel, with a fixed value of 5.5A for the interionic size parameter. (Author).

Book excerpt: Colloque Weyl I was convened in June 1963 at the Catholic University of Lille to commemorate one hundred years of the study of metal-ammonia solutions. This memorable event, which involved a "single-particle excitation", inspired Gerard Lepoutre to assemble an international group of physicists and chemists to discuss the nature of metal-ammonia solutions. Colloque Weyl II, which took 1969, was initiated as a place at Cornell Universtiy, Ithaca, N.Y. in June "cooperative interaction" between M. J. Sienko, J. L. Dye, J. J. Lagowski, G. Lepoutre and J. C. Thompson. That meeting made it clear that Colloque Weyl should be continued in order to promote the fruitful exchange of ideas set in motion at Lille and at Cornell. Colloque Weyl III came into being as the result of a resolution passed at the Cornell meeting, Tel-Aviv University being the suggested site. The Organizing Committee consisted ofE. D. Bergmann, J. Jortner, J. J. Lagowski, G. Lepoutre, U. Schindewolf and M. J. Sienko, reflecting the international and interdisciplinary aspects of the field.

Book excerpt: Dilute solutions of the alkali metals in liquid ammonia are assumed to consist of the following constituents: M+, the solvated metal cation; S, the solvent; M-, the solvated metal anion; S-, the solvent anion (solvated electron); the ion-pairs M+.M- and M+.S-. These species are assumed to be in equilibrium via M+ + 2S- reversibly yields M- + 2S and M+ + A- reversibly yields M+.A-, where A- is either M- or S-. With generally good results being obtained, the foregoing model has been applied to account for the following properties of alkali metal-ammonia solutions which are more dilute than about 0.10 M: (1) the spin paramagnetic susceptibilities reported by Hutchison and Pastor; (2) the vapor-pressure depression results of Kraus; (3) the electrical conductances measured by Kraus and the temperature coefficients of conductance, reported by Gibson and Phipps; (4) the Knight shifts for N14 and Na23, reported by McConnell and Holm, Acrivos and Pitzer and O'Reilly; (5) the optical absorption results of Gold and Jolly, and those of Dye and Douthit. An a postiori argument supports the neglect of ion-triples for the solutions which have been considered, and reinforces a distinction to be made between the metal anion Na- and the analogous ion-triple S-. Na+.S-

Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book excerpt: Radiation Research: Biomedical, Chemical and Physical Perspectives documents the proceedings of the Fifth International Congress of Radiation Research held in Seattle, Washington, 14-20 July 1974. While the focus of the Congress was on fundamental research, there were several well-attended sessions on the practical aspects of radiation research as it relates to radiotherapy, central station power generation by both nuclear fission and fusion, and the environment. This volume contains 126 papers organized into 31 parts. Beginning with a keynote address and a lecture on the time scale in radiobiology, the subsequent contributions cover a wide range of topics presented over several sessions. Topics discussed during these sessions include energy needs, nuclear power, and the environment; prospects for fusion power; technological applications of radiation; human radiobiology; hazards of radiation exposure relative to other environmental agents; the basic physics of the interactions of radiation with matter; particle penetration phenomena; and radiation effects in frozen media.
