Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Philosophy, Including Theoretical and Practical Ethics The present volume is the result of the author's studies while Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy in Amherst College, and was originally prepared as a course of lectures to the senior class in that Institution. It was intended as a sequel to the author's treatise on Mental Philosophy. The favorable reception of that work by the public has induced him to give this also to the press, with the hope that it may be of service to the cause of Education. Few departments of science have so rich a literature as Moral Philosophy. And yet, by general concession, there are few good text-books of the science. Of the treatises now most generally in use in our schools and colleges, some appear deficient in thorough scientific discussion of the principles and true theory of morals; others, again, in practical detail. As thus defined, it is equivalent to Ethics. It may be termed, also, the science of duties, inasmuch as right and duty are, as regards moral action, one and the same. Book excerpt: "The author contends that one advantage of studying ethics is to lead the student to reflect on the nature of the motives by which he is habitually actuated, and the tendency of the course of conduct which he is daily pursuing. Another advantage of studying the science of ethics is the effect it has on the moral sensibility of the individual. Most men are willing to study the maxims which point out the path of virtue and happiness, if those maxims can be presented in connection with the reasons by which they are supported, and not as mere commands resting solely on the authority of God"--Introduction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Moral Philosophy: Comprising the Theory of Morals and Practical Ethics Moral philosophy or Ethics, says Dr. Paley, is that science which teaches men their duty and the reasons of it. One advantage of making this sci ence a study, is, to lead the student to reflect on the nature of the motives by Which he is habitually actu ated, and the tendency of the course of conduct which he is daily pursuing. Although the science should afl'ord no new information in regard to the moral nature of man, nor cast any new light on the path of duty, yet the individual might derive very great benefit from being led frequently and seriously to reflect on the subjects on whch it treats. It is of reflection rather than instruction, that many stand most in need. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Singer is not interested in moral reasoning for its own sake, but insofar as it guides action. This book examines the foundational principles and ideas that govern his moral philosophy assessing whether he achieves his aim of constructing practical ethics. Singer presents his ideas clearly and eloquently, but often they are inconsistent and even contradictory. The simplicity with which he puts them forward is commendable, but sometimes he reduces important issues to simple slogans. Many of Singer's ideas are highly controversial, but he shows sensitivity towards others; albeit within a utilitarian framework.Singer claimed that his revolution in ethics was to be on rational foundations; he wanted to make ethics as more scientific, and as with any practical science it must be based on theoretical foundations. To create this system, he uses a peculiar definition of rationality that is arbitrary and open to criticism. The limitations of Singer's theoretical foundations put into question the normative conclusions of his applied ethics. The metaethical writings that underpin his practical conclusions have had limited examination and commentary by professional philosophers. This study analyses his views in the light of utilitarian thought and the philosophical issues this ethical theory has needed to resolve as a moral system. In particular, there is a detailed discussion on Singer's arguments in favour of infanticide. (Nova)

' - but look and see" Ludwig Wittgenstein In the history of western moral philosophy since Plato, there has been a pervasive tendency for the moral theorist to wri~e, in effect, like a scientist, Le. to seek completely general prin ciples of right conduct. Of late, moreover, there has been an attempt to set forth a theory underlying the general principles, not of right conduct, admittedly, but of justice. To be sure, we are sometimes warned that the principles (which must exist?) may be too complex to be formulated. Also they may not exist prior to action - nonetheless, we are told, they serve as guides to conduct! One inight argue that Baconian inductivism provides one basis for skepticism with respect to a number of familiar epistemological problems. Thus, the skeptic argues, a certain conclusion - say, the existence of another's pain - is not justified on the basis of (behavioral) evidence either deductively or inductively, and hence it is not justified at all. Similarly, I should claim, by establishing an unattainable standard, the search for exceptionless principles may become a source of moral skepticism. After all, when con fronted with a supposed principle designed to justify a particular ix x PREFACE action, one can generally imagine a counter-example to the prin ciple without excessive difficulty.

The Sayings of Confucius CHAPTER I PRELIMINARY ETHICS seeks to answer two questions What is to be regarded as right and as wrong and Why should people do what is right and not do what is wrong In other words, the questions are What is the content of morality and What is the sanction for morality It may be said that both these ques tions are within the province of Religion and that Philosophy need not concern her self with them. But mankind is divided among the adherents of many religions while their teachings often coincide, often also they diverge. If Moslems and Hin dus, Christians and Jews, Protestants and Catholics, have different ideas of the right and the wrong of a given case, what is to be the outcome Are opposite lines 7 PRACTICAL ETHICS of conduct to be held to be right in the same circumstances for different people Or is there need of some further test, of some other authority to give judgement Even among adherents of the same creed, when a conflict arises in some matter of moment, each side will claim a religious sanction for its view. The will of God prevails. No doubt, no doubt Yet, in great contests, each side claims to act In strict accordance with the will of God. Both may, one must be wrong. x Further, as civilization develops, many of the rules of conduct in a country will gradually change, although the same re ligion may be professed throughout. New discoveries set new problems, and new ideas bring about new customs. One age will approve, and its religion will not condemn, slavery, or duelling, or war, while a later age may abhor them. Mor ality evolves. There can be no absolute standard, ordained, unchanging. 1 For the sources of quotations see list of references, p. 241. 8 PRELIMINARY Again, there are some people almost everywhere who do not accept the cur rent theological beliefs, or who, accepting them formally, are not effectively influenced by them in their daily lives. If mor ality rested upon those beliefs alone, these people would have no basis for a moral code or reason for moral conduct. The religions clearly have a great part to play in the realm of ethics. But, for the reasons that have been given, Philo sophy cannot withdraw from that field, in the conviction that it is fully covered, and to the satisfaction of all mankind, by her sister Religion. Nor can Reason surrender the field in favour of Intuition. There are some who hold that there is a natural instinct im planted in human beings, of which con science is the spokesman, and which is an infallible guide to right and wrong. They say of morality, as St. Augustine said of Time, I know what it is when you do not ask me If this theory wexe true, 9 PRACTICAL ETHICS mankind would be unanimous as to what constitutes right conduct but experience shows that this is very far from the case. For one mans intuition contradicts another mans intuition. One person will be a conscientious objector to some law which his neighbour accepts as obviously right. When this happens, what guidance can we get from this principle When private emotion is regarded as the test of truth, controversies arise which are intractable...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thirty years, Peter Singer's Practical Ethics has been the classic introduction to applied ethics. For this third edition, the author has revised and updated all the chapters and added a new chapter addressing climate change, one of the most important ethical challenges of our generation. Some of the questions discussed in this book concern our daily lives. Is it ethical to buy luxuries when others do not have enough to eat? Should we buy meat from intensively reared animals? Am I doing something wrong if my carbon footprint is above the global average? Other questions confront us as concerned citizens: equality and discrimination on the grounds of race or sex; abortion, the use of embryos for research and euthanasia; political violence and terrorism; and the preservation of our planet's environment. This book's lucid style and provocative arguments make it an ideal text for university courses and for anyone willing to think about how she or he ought to live.
