This book examines the foundational principles and ideas that govern his moral philosophy assessing whether he achieves his aim of constructing practical ethics. Singer presents his ideas clearly and eloquently, but often they are inconsistent and even contradictory. The simplicity with which he puts them forward is commendable, but sometimes he reduces important issues to simple slogans. Many of Singer's ideas are highly controversial, but he shows sensitivity towards others; albeit within a utilitarian framework.Singer claimed that his revolution in ethics was to be on rational foundations; he wanted to make ethics as more scientific, and as with any practical science it must be based on theoretical foundations. To create this system, he uses a peculiar definition of rationality that is arbitrary and open to criticism. The limitations of Singer's theoretical foundations put into question the normative conclusions of his applied ethics.The metaethical writings that underpin his practical conclusions have had limited examination and commentary by professional philosophers. This study analyses his views in the light of utilitarian thought and the philosophical issues this ethical theory has needed to resolve as a moral system. Of late, moreover, there has been an attempt to set forth a theory underlying the general principles, not of right conduct, admittedly, but of justice. To be sure, we are sometimes warned that the principles (which must exist?) may be too complex to be formulated. Also they may not exist prior to action - nonetheless, we are told, they serve as guides to conduct! One inight argue that Baconian inductivism provides one basis for skepticism with respect to a number of familiar epistemological problems. Thus, the skeptic argues, a certain conclusion - say, the existence of another's pain - is not justified on the basis of (behavioral) evidence either deductively or inductively, and hence it is not justified at all. Similarly, I should claim, by establishing an unattainable standard, the search for exceptionless principles may become a source of moral skepticism. After all, when con fronted with a supposed principle designed to justify a particular ix x PREFACE action, one can generally imagine a counter-example to the prin ciple without excessive difficulty.

But mankind is divided among the adherents of many religions while their teachings often coincide, often also they diverge. If Moslems and Hin dus, Christians and Jews, Protestants and Catholics, have different ideas of the right and the wrong of a given case, what is to be the outcome Are opposite lines 7 PRACTICAL ETHICS of conduct to be held to be right in the same circumstances for different people Or is there need of some further test, of some other authority to give judgement Even among adherents of the same creed, when a conflict arises in some matter of moment, each side will claim a religious sanction for its view. The will of God prevails. No doubt, no doubt Yet, in great contests, each side claims to act In strict accordance with the will of God. Both may, one must be wrong. x Further, as civilization develops, many of the rules of conduct in a country will gradually change, although the same re ligion may be professed throughout. New discoveries set new problems, and new ideas bring about new customs. One age will approve, and its religion will not condemn, slavery, or duelling, or war, while a later age may abhor them. Mor ality evolves.
