Book excerpt: Moorish Literature Romantic Ballads, Tales of The Berbers, Stories of The Kabyles, Folk-Lore, and National Traditions Translated into English for the First Time With A Special Introduction By Rene Basset, Ph.d. Of The University Of France, And Director Of The Academie D'alger Translated by Rene Basset The region which extends from the frontiers of Egypt to the Atlantic Ocean, and from the Mediterranean to the Niger, was in ancient times inhabited by a people to whom we give the general name of Berbers, but whom the ancients, particularly those of the Eastern portion, knew under the name of Moors. "They were called Maurisi by the Greeks," said Strabo, "in the first century A.D., and Mauri by the Romans. They are of Lybian origin, and form a powerful and rich nation." This name of Moors is applied not only to the descendants of the ancient Lybians and Numidians, who live in the nomad state or in settled abodes, but also to the descendants of the Arabs who, in the eighth century A.D., brought with them Islamism, imposed by the sabre of Ogbah and his successors. Even further was it carried, into Spain, when Berbers and Arabs, reunited under the standard of Moussa and Tarik, added this country to the empire of the Khalifa. In the fifteenth century the Portuguese, in their turn, took the name to the Orient, and gave the name of Moors to the Mussulmans whom they found on the Oriental coast of Africa and in India. The appellation particularizes, as one may see, three peoples entirely different in origin--the Berbers, the Arabs of the west, and the Spanish Mussulmans, widely divided, indeed, by political struggles, but united since the seventh and eighth centuries in their religious law. This distinction must be kept in mind, as it furnishes the necessary divisions for a study of the Moorish literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moorish Literature: Comprising Romantic Ballads, Tales of the Berbers, Stories of the Kabylie, Folk-Lore and National Traditions The Moorish ballads which appear in this volume are selected from a unique department of European literature. They are found in the Spanish language, but their character is oriental; their inspiration comes from the Mahometan conquerors of northern Africa, and while they exhibit a blending of Spanish earnestness and chivalry with the wild and dashing spirit of the Arab, they present a type of literature which is quite unparalleled in the Latin and Teutonic countries of the Mediterranean basin. Spain is especially rich in ballad literature, infinitely richer than any other civilized nation. These ballads take various forms. By Cervantes and his countrymen they are styled romances, and the romance generally consists in a poem which describes the character, sufferings, or exploits of a single individual. The language is simple; the versification, often artless though melodious, is seldom elaborated into complexity of rhyme. But the heroic Moor is set before us in the most vivid colors. The hues and material of his cloak, his housings, his caftan, and his plumes are given, and quite a vocabulary is exhausted in depicting the color, sex, and breed of his warhorse. His weapons, lance, scimitar, and corslet of steel are dwelt upon with enthusiasm. He is as brave as Mars, and as comely as Adonis. Sometimes he dashes into a bull-ring and slays wild creatures in the sight of fair ladies and envious men. He throws his lance of cane, which is filled with sand, so high that it vanishes in the clouds. He is ready to strike down, in his own house, the Christian who has taken from him and wedded the lady of his choice. He is almost always in love with some lady who is unkind and cold, and for her he wanders at times in dark array, expressing his sombre mood in the device and motto which he paints upon his shield. Book excerpt: This book provides students, instructors, and lay-readers with a cross-cultural understanding of storytelling as an art form that has existed for centuries, from the first spoken and sung stories to those that are drawn and performed today. This book serves as an indispensable resource for students and scholars interested in storytelling and in multicultural approaches to the arts. By taking an evolutionary approach, this book begins with a discussion of origin stories and continues through history to stories of the 21st century. The text not only engages the stories themselves, it also explains how individuals from all disciplines, from doctors and lawyers to priests and journalists, use stories to focus their readers' and listeners' attention and influence them. This text addresses stories and storytelling across both time (thousands of years) and geography, including in-depth descriptions of storytelling practices occurring in more than 40 different cultures around the world. Part I consists of thematic essays, exploring such topics as the history of storytelling, common elements across cultures, different media, lessons stories teach us, and storytelling today. Part II looks at more than 40 different cultures, with entries following the same outline: Overview, Storytellers: Who Tell the Stories, and When, Creation Mythologies, Teaching Tales and Values, and Cultural Preservation. Several tales/tale excerpts accompany each entry.

Book excerpt: In 'Moorish Literature,' a resplendent anthology preserving the enchanted tapestry of stories from the Maghreb region, one encounters a venerable mosaic of Romantic Ballads, Tales of the Berbers, Kabyle anecdotes, robust Folk-Lore, and sagacious National Traditions. This work heralds not only the cultural and historical underpinnings of a bygone era but does so with a stylistic fidelity and linguistic dexterity that vividly resurrects the oral traditions of Moorish societies. Nestled within its pages is a literary context that marries the evocative narratives of a people with the broader Arab and African literary corpus, reaffirming the universal themes of love, valor, and identity that transcend time and geography. The compilation's rich diversity and the nuanced translation work ensure a preservation of the essence of these almost-forgotten tales. The unknown myriad of authors, whose collective labor graze the annals of 'Moorish Literature,' mirror the pluralism and the many faces of Moorish identity itself. These texts, compressed through history's sieve, reflect an authorship born of the myriad Berber tribes and the wider Moorish peoples, likely influenced by the crossroads of cultures that have interacted within the Maghreb across centuries. Such authorship brings forth a patchwork of human experience, articulated by those who might have witnessed the zenith of Moorish influence or the cultural renaissance that struck North Africa. The narratives borne of such times stand as testaments to their intellectual legacy, leaving trails for literary conservationists to salvage and celebrate. 'Readers with a taste for the taste of the exotic, the student of cultural anthropology, and the linguist with a love for the filigree of translation will find 'Moorish Literature' an indispensable addition to their shelves. It beckons to those who listen for the whisper of history in the turning of its pages and to those who yearn to explore the vistas of human narrative etched outside the often-trodden path of Western literature. In receiving this assemblage of narratives, the modern reader is afforded a rare glimpse into the soul of Moorish civilization and its storytelling heritage—a gift meticulously delivered anew to a contemporary audience.
