Download or read book Moonstone written by Sjón and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mind-bending miniature historical epic is Sjón's specialty, and Moonstone: The Boy Who Never Was is no exception. But it is also Sjón's most realistic, accessible, and heartfelt work yet. It is the story of a young man on the fringes of a society that is itself at the fringes of the world--at what seems like history's most tumultuous, perhaps ultimate moment. Máni Steinn is queer in a society in which the idea of homosexuality is beyond the furthest extreme. His city, Reykjavik in 1918, is homogeneous and isolated and seems entirely defenseless against the Spanish flu, which has already torn through Europe, Asia, and North America and is now lapping up on Iceland's shores. And if the flu doesn't do it, there's always the threat that war will spread all the way north. And yet the outside world has also brought Icelanders cinema! And there's nothing like a dark, silent room with a film from Europe flickering on the screen to help you escape from the overwhelming threats--and adventures--of the night, to transport you, to make you feel like everything is going to be all right. For Máni Steinn, the question is whether, at Reykjavik's darkest hour, he should retreat all the way into this imaginary world, or if he should engage with the society that has so soundly rejected him.

Year One at Moonstone Academy… Yeah, it’s been rough for this werewolf. Some of the students like to torment me because my dad’s a demon. As if it’s not bad enough, my mom’s basically abandoned me. But there’s one werewolf who’s caught my eye and not just because he has a scar and is dark and mysterious. As Robb and I grow closer, I’m drawn into darkness—darkness by my dad and by my tormentors… and maybe by myself and even Robb. Book Synopsis The Stuff of Science Fiction by : Gary Westfahl
Download or read book The Stuff of Science Fiction written by Gary Westfahl and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While students and general readers typically cannot relate to esoteric definitions of science fiction, they readily understand the genre as a literature that characteristically deals with subjects such as new inventions, space, robot and aliens. This book looks at science fiction in precisely this manner, with twenty-one chapters that each deal with a subject that is repeatedly addressed in science fiction of recent centuries. Based on a packet of original essays that the author assembled for his classes, the book could serve as a supplemental textbook in science fiction classes, but also contains material of interest to science fiction scholars and others devoted to the genre. In some cases, chapters offer thorough surveys of numerous works involving certain subjects, such as imagined vehicles, journeys beneath the Earth and undersea adventures, discovering intriguing patterns in the ways that various writers developed their ideas. When comprehensive coverage of ubiquitous topics such as robots, aliens and the planet Mars is impossible, chapters focus on major themes referencing selected texts. A conclusion discusses other science fiction subjects that were omitted for various reasons, and a bibliography lists additional resources for the study of science fiction in general and the topics of each chapter.

Most mysterious is the marshland kingdom of Moss—feared by the others and ruled by the Sorcerers. Soon, all will be put in peril’s way. But Prince Conrig of Cathra, who waits patiently as his father, the king, wastes slowly away, is in league with his lover, the seductive sorceress Princess Ullanoth of Moss. Summary: The story of bravery, togetherness, and the never-ending search for hope in "Chronicle of the Moon Stone" is very interesting. A group of brave explorers gathers around a mysterious stone that has the amazing power to change time. This stone is the main focus of the journey. Even though they come from different places, the stone draws them together and they both have to stop a bad future that an old oracle says will happen. Their trip is a race against time that takes them through thick forests, tall mountains, and wide fields. At every turn, they will face problems that will test their strength of will. The adventurers have to figure out hard puzzles, avoid dangerous terrain, and face scary animals as they move through this magical land. Many people betray them on their trip, which tests their trust and union. But it's through these tests that their friendships get stronger. They will have to show how brave, smart, and honest they are when they face the guardian of the stone, a smart creature that dares them to prove their worth. When the stone's power brings out an old evil, they have to show how strong they are. They use the stone's power to drive away evil and light up the dark in a very important battle for the soul of their world, even though it costs them a lot personally. They have sad hearts because of the sacrifices they have had to make along the way, but it is these sacrifices that show how far they have come. Triumphant and reflective, the travelers come back not only as mythical heroes but also as new people. Along with memories of their trips, they bring the lessons they've learned and the friends they've made through hard times. Their brave stories and the belief that no problem is too big for a group to handle will continue to motivate and inspire people in the future. Their work lives on. "Chronicle of the Moon Stone" is more than just an adventure story. It's a story about how bravery, friendship, and hope can last forever. As a reminder that light can win over complete darkness, it marks the start of a new day and a trip. Chapter 1: The Mysterious Stone A long time ago, there was a quiet village with gentle hills and lush green forests. There lived an interesting little girl called Lily. Lily loved to try new things, had beautiful eyes, and was naturally interested in everything. The houses with thatched roofs and cobblestone streets made this village a great place to explore every day. Lily picked a nice morning to go for a walk in the woods. The woods were magical, with tall trees reaching for the sky and the sweet sound of birds singing that made your heart skip a beat. Lily loved being in the woods more than anywhere else. She used to dream of being a brave explorer who found hidden wealth and went to new places. She saw something strange as she went deeper into the woods. A stone was lying on the ground. This stone was different, though. The way the colors sparkled in the sun was something Lily had never seen before. The stone moved with light and looked like it was alive. Lily quickly reached out and grabbed the stone, interested. It felt cool and smooth and seemed to be happy to be found, as if it were murmuring quietly. Lily knew she had found something very interesting. She thought about where the stone came from. What is it? Is it a piece of a lost star or a diamond from a secret treasure chest? She could see many things in her mind. She chose to learn more about the stone at home. Folklore buff Lily took the stone to her grandmother when she got back home. Her grandmother was famous in the town for her knowledge of stones. The stone amazed her grandma so much that her eyes got really big. Lily asked her what kind of stone it was. She told her it was a "Mysterious Stone" with ancient power. The Mysterious Stone is said to be able to grant wishes to anyone with good thoughts and a pure heart. For some reason, Lily got really excited. Because of the power in the stone, she could now make the world a better place, which was her dream all along. But her grandmother told her that great power comes with great duty. Because the stone's magic could only be used three times, she had to be careful about what she wanted. That night, Lily lay in bed and thought about what she wanted. Besides making her happy, she wanted what she wanted to make other people happy too. Before making her first wish, she gave it a lot of thought. She hoped that everyone in the village could get food and enjoy the beauty of the most beautiful garden in the village. The next morning, everyone was shocked to find that the town square had been turned into a beautiful garden, complete with flowers, fruits, and veggies. When Lily saw how happy her wish had made Hamlet, she felt a rush of happiness. She was determined to use her last two wishes because she knew they would let her keep making the world a better place. The Mysterious Stone did more than just add magic to Lily's life. It also taught her the value of being kind, generous, and having big goals. Chapter 2: Showing How Strong It Is. When Lily found the beautiful stone in the woods, she had no idea what an amazing journey she was about to go on. This stone wasn't just any stone; it was a magical stone that could change time in amazing ways! Imagine being able to stop, skip over a bad scene, or even go back in time to see an important historical event. When Lily's fingers touched the smooth surface, she felt a rush of electricity go through her body. It tingled from the tips of her fingers to the tips of her toes. The stone seemed to be living and was happy to see its new caretaker. Lily became more interested. While holding the stone, she felt like she could do anything. She thought about how many skills it had and how it got to rest in her peaceful forest. It felt warm to the touch, and as she held it, she remembered things from long ago. It was like watching movie clips. These visions helped Lily understand what the stone was really like and how it remembered things. Lily was excited, so she chose to look into the stone's properties. With her eyes closed, she held on to the rock and wished she could see the dinosaurs she had only read about. In a moment, everything changed around her. The famous forest was turned into a huge, open area where huge animals were free to roam. She had gone through time! The roars of the dinosaurs could be heard all over the sky, and they were huge—much bigger than she thought. Lily couldn't believe she was seeing history happen right in front of her eyes! She finally wanted to go home, and as soon as she left, she went back to the present. The experience shocked her and made her want to learn more. She realized that the stone could take her not only back in time, but also forward in time, or even stop time so she could fully experience a moment. There were a few other options. But having a lot of power also comes with a lot of duty. Lily knew the stone wasn't useful for anything. She made the choice to change the world for the better. By going back in time, she set out to answer a question that had people stumped for years. She saw the truth, and with the stone, she helped many people find peace. The Guardian of Time came into being as word spread about Lily's brave actions. She did a great job with the stone, helping where she could while being aware of what would happen if she changed history. She learned about being brave, being kind, and how important it is to live in the moment.
