Book excerpt: Join Shaklee and Amway, two enterprising aliens hell-bent on selling moonshine to the outer worlds. Towed into low Earth orbit, their penniless campaign immediately collides with human ambition and downhome hillbilly charm. Chief among their opposition is the new president-elect, a genuine backwoods Tennessee boy aided by his girlfriend from the stars. It's a silly, improbable tale of human folly and extraterrestrial nonsense.

Book excerpt: If science has the equivalent of a Bloomsbury group, it is the five men born at the turn of the twentieth century in Budapest: Theodore von Karman, Leo Szilard, Eugene Wigner, John von Neumann, and Edward Teller. From Hungary to Germany to the United States, they remained friends and continued to work together and influence each other throughout their lives. As a result, their work was integral to some of the most important scientific and political developments of the twentieth century. They were an extraordinary group of talents: Wigner won a Nobel Prize in theoretical physics; Szilard was the first to see that a chain reaction based on neutrons was possible, initiated the Manhattan Project, but left physics to try to restrict nuclear arms; von Neumann could solve difficult problems in his head and developed the modern computer for more complex problems; von Karman became the first director of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, providing the scientific basis for the U.S. Air Force; and Teller was the father of the hydrogen bomb, whose name is now synonymous with the controversial "Star Wars" initiative of the 1980s. Each was fiercely opinionated, politically active, and fought against all forms of totalitarianism. Istvan Hargittai, as a young Hungarian physical chemist, was able to get to know some of these great men in their later years, and the depth of information and human interest in The Martians of Science is the result of his personal relationships with the subjects, their families, and their contemporaries.

It covers everything, right from our ancient beliefs, through the revolution in our concepts of the cosmos around us in the 1600s, to the present day knowledge and beyond. It takes the reader on a journey all the way to the futuristic visions of science fiction and terraformed Mars with conditions suitable to Earth life. The story is told in a readable form with an absence of technical jargon. The text is supported by informative imagery and a simple, but inspiring layout with some special features such as a "flip movie" of the rotation of Mars.

Book excerpt: Police chief Arly Hanks tries to keep her head when the people of Maggody get UFO fever in this uproarious cozy mystery. Life is so boring in Maggody, Arkansas, population 755, the locals have resorted to reading supermarket tabloids, gobbling up every rumor of wolf men, zombies, and creatures from outer space they can get their hands on. And as the only sane woman in town, Chief of Police Arly Hanks just smiles and nods whenever her neighbors rave about the latest conspiracy theories. But to Arly’s eternal horror, it looks like Maggody is about to become ground zero for an extraterrestrial invasion. The aliens will never know what hit ’em. It starts when strange circles appear in Raz Buchanon’s cornfields, drawing reporters, newscasters, and every nut west of the Mississippi. But as supernatural fever hits Maggody, Arly is confronted with a very terrestrial murder. There may be aliens on Main Street, but in a town this strange, how could anybody tell the difference? Life has always been nutty in Maggody, but the madness is about to go paranormal. Master of cozies Joan Hess knows better than anyone how to push a mystery to the brink of madness—and then push it a whole lot farther. Martians in Maggody is the 8th book in the Arly Hanks Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

In Mars Ho!, prospective Mars colonists compete on a worldwide reality show. As rivals and potential partners, Mark Lauren and Lori Ridgeway must each decide what they would do for a one-way trip to Mars. The same passion and stubbornness that bring them together against the hazards of competition, dangerous drama, and an endless supply of unpalatable protein paste might be the very factors that keep them worlds apart. But Mars is calling, and a global audience is getting ready to vote. Lovers and Lunatics goes behind the scenes of the Mars Ho! reality show as producer Hannah Cuthbertson launches into orbit with her most loathed co-worker, “The Face of Space” Gary Nelson, to promote a new program. But one dangerous and hair-raising coincidence after another proves this is no ordinary assignment. Hannah and Gary must put their differences aside to get to the bottom of an insidious conspiracy—on Earth and in orbit—and to satisfy the escalating heat between them. In Mars Heat, the newly landed colonists find themselves unprepared for life on the Red Planet, and at immediate odds with the crew of the resident United Nations Space Corps mission. On a planet that is trying to kill them at every turn, colonist Trevor Azam and UNSC Commander Hogan Kay must learn to work together for mutual survival. Amidst bioreactors, food printers, and ill-fated trysts, might true love be lurking on the Red Planet? If you can’t stand the heat, you’d better stay off Mars. This collection contains the complete Mars Adventure Romance Series trilogy. If you like space adventure, corporate intrigue, and getting frisky in microgravity, you’ll love the spicy MARS books!

Book excerpt: Discover places where a day is longer than a year, where hailstones are made of diamonds, and where a mountain looms twice the size of Everest. These and more are all to be found in The Planets. The Sun’s gravity holds in thrall eight planets, each with an entourage of moons, as well as dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets. The Planets takes you on a dazzling visual tour. From the Solar System’s fiery heart, travel to rocky worlds such as tiny Mercury scorched by the Sun. Then witness Venus swathed in a sulfurous haze, and go to the outer reaches to visit planets such as gas giant Jupiter, which is 120 times the size of Earth. Using 3-D models and photography from NASA and the European Space Agency, The Planets describes each one, as well as the extraordinary endeavors of space exploration. Edited by space scientist Maggie Aderin-Pocock, this book is enthralling reading for everyone interested in astronomy and space exploration.

Book excerpt: The world around the last of civilization has surrendered to global warming, leaving two groups of survivors: the wealthy Nobles in the north and impoverished Drainers in the south, all safely tucked inside the sealed domed city of Sai. After almost 300 years, the dome is all they've ever known and are content until they find out their powerful turbine generators are being sabotaged by someone—or something. In the midst of it all, Lilith Burgess, the beautiful 17-year-old daughter of the president of Sai, falls for a handsome young school janitor named Adam Cleary. Relationships between Nobles and Drainers are forbidden, but despite Lilith’s many attempts to stay away, there is an unmistakable draw to be near Adam. When their feelings for each other are realized, their secret love affair begins and they are determined to make sure nothing come between them. After Adam impossibly saves Lilith from falling off a second-floor balcony with his blur of blinding speed, she discovers he’s hiding something and is determined to uncover it. For months, he has been able to conceal his true identity, but the closer they get, the faster the secrets begin to unravel. When Lilith finally learns the truth, it’s more terrifying than she realized and is torn between love and fear. Adam would do anything to keep her safe, but how can she trust him—now that she knows that he himself—is the dome’s greatest threat?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Wisdom of the Martians of Science refers to five scientists whose brilliance contributed to shaping the modern world. John von Neumann was a pioneer of the modern computer; Theodore von Kármán was the scientist behind the US Air Force; Leo Szilard initiated the development of nuclear weapons; the Nobel laureate Eugene P Wigner was the world's first nuclear engineer; and Edward Teller was the father of the hydrogen bomb. They were born and raised in Budapest, were forced out of Hungary and then from Germany, they became Americans, and devoted themselves to the defense of the United States and the Free World. They contributed significant discoveries to fundamental science ranging from the properties of materials to the application of the symmetry principle in physics, to creating information theory, to game theory. The areas in which we can learn about their wisdom include applications of science to past, present and future real-world needs; defense; education; environment; human nature; humor; politics; religion; weather modification, and others. This book shows the wisdom of the Martians by presenting their thoughts and ideas in their own words and placing them into context. Their wisdom is intriguing, witty, provocative and thought provoking. It extended over many aspects of life and culture that impinge on our existence. While we cannot always agree with what they say, they are never boring. The power of their words and their philosophies will inspire the readers to pursue their own dreams."--

Two competing nations have founded their remote, interplanetary outposts on the red planet, separated by over two thousand kilometers of alien and hostile desert. Without warning, communications with the earth are suddenly and inexplicably lost. All systematized transmissions from earth have ceased. It is as though the earth has disappeared. Without warning or explanation, the colonists are alone in the universe. Survival on Mars is a synthesis of skill, intellect, courage as well as the most advanced technology ever developed. But in no one's blackest nightmare has anyone ever planned on permanently severing all links with the home planet. The thin barrier between life and death has just been sliced in two - and now the relatively small band of humans are no longer explorers, but now they are interplanetary castaways, waiting for a rescue that may never come. Now there are too many people and there is far too little to go around. It soon becomes apparent, they would have to fight one another to live - war on another planet becomes the only way out. Dennis Chamberland's Abyss of Elysium - Mars Wars - is filled with the full sweep of the most dramatic, high-tech, nail biting audacious adventure in the genre. Chamberland's style is characterized by a sustained extreme energy, high stakes and maximum passion, a fusion of the human drama and the technology that links the humans with an alien planet.

Book excerpt: The Lunarian Professor and His Remarkable Revelations follows the prophecies and scientific observations of a Minnesotan professor based on his study of the sky and the stars. Excerpt: "Let me see. It was six (6) years since I had an outing. It seemed a long time and it was long enough to obscure the conviction I had once arrived at that the average outing is on the whole more of a bore than pleasure and that its principal value consists in making a fellow satisfied with his ordinary work and glad to get back to it again."
