Book excerpt: A faery sighting near Pittsburgh transforms one woman's life forever...and maybe yours, too. When Lilith Devlin, Pittsburgh bookstore manager retires to her garden one evening with Cleo, her cat, magic happens. BOOK EXCERPT: She thought she'd seen every possible being, and yet, after she nestled on the bench, Cleo curled below by her feet, she noticed something new.A pink light pulsed from the soft, green leaves of the peony bush, whose blossoms were but a memory of a few weeks last May."Lightning bugs aren't pink." Lilith rose to investigate, leaving Cleo sleeping. She pulled back her long, curly red hair and bent down closer, too curious to be afraid of the world in her garden."It's about time," the small creature said.Lilith held her breath, closed her eyes, and counted to ten. When she opened her eyes again, the creature still sat there on a leaf, legs crossed. She looked like a tiny person with wings, a pink person with long, blond, wispy hair. Her dragonfly-type wings spread wide and clear, with pink glowing at their edges."Time for what?" Lilith said, unwilling to believe her eyes. She knew what she'd eaten for dinner couldn't explain this hallucination.THE STORY: Lilith Devlin's dreams, buried years ago, re-emerge when Florinda the faery appears in her Pittsburgh garden and asks her to write a faery novel and to perform a mysterious mission. Thought the faery promises love, she's paralyzed by fear, for her life of working as a bookstore manager, living in seclusion with her cat, will change. She balks until circumstances force her to agree. Right away, she flies to Ireland, where Old World faeries fascinate her with their ways. While there, she meets and is strongly attracted to New York editor Adam Kramer, who expresses keen interest in her faery novel. Her romantic hopes are waylaid, however, by his wedding band and female companion. Yet weeks later, she and Adam land in Antananarivo, Madagascar, to prevent slaughter of endangered lemurs--the faery mission. Danger, joy, and romance abound as Lilith and Adam search for lemurs, battle nasty characters, and allow island moonlight and breezes to transport them to a world of passion.

Holly and Ethan are the best of friends. While one child is harshly neglected the other is loved beyond measure. Their mothers' secrets and one wild promise bind them together in ways they may never truly fathom. Kate O'Brien presents her second novel, The Pixie Plot a dark tale of friendship, faerie folk and betrayal set against the backdrop of a tiny Yorkshire village. With a passion for gothic literature, magic realism and faerie folklore, Kate O'Brien's stories are inspired by local landscapes and places visited on bygone family holidays, now explored with her own children. Kate is the author of Driftwood and Amethyst. She writes stories and poetry which tiptoe on the edge of magic and folklore while rooting themselves in reality. She lives in South Yorkshire with her two sons and two cats and spends her days writing, teaching and being a mum all played out to a constant stream of good music.

Book excerpt: I know what I have to do. My mother explained it all. I know now what a sperm donor is, and my so-called Earth-father is one. Or was one. He abandoned my mother as soon as he could have the chance. He climbed a tall, tall tree and disappeared. My mother believes he’s still alive. He has to be found if his soul is still existing. He must be destroyed. My mother believes he’s one of Death Heart’s pawns. Whoever this Death Heart is anyway. I heard he is the most evil of evils. And he’s supposed to be back with vengeance. I am here with vengeance. But now . . . now we lay my mother to rest. It’s my duty to take over the Creator’s kingdom and start a whole new storybook. I’m supposed to marry that loser, Eric. But I have other plans. And Bianca’s gullible. She thinks I like her. Her man, Sigor, is smoking hot. What kind of man in this world doesn’t like silvery blonde hair? Ha. Yara is an airy faerie-ditz, and LaChandra is trapped. I somehow think I can pull Aleuzia onto my side, though. Yes, my side. I have so much power splurging in my veins it takes all my energy to keep it from escaping my fingertips. I close my eyes and sleep.

Book excerpt: A year or so before the beginning of World War I, a young woman named Lisa la Giuffria is seduced by a white magician, Cyril Grey, and persuaded into helping him in a magical battle with a black magician and his black lodge. Grey is attempting to raise the level of his force by impregnating the girl with the soul of an ethereal being, the moonchild. To achieve this, she will have to be kept in a secluded environment, and many preparatory magical rituals will be carried out. The black magician Douglas is bent on destroying Grey's plan. However, Grey's ultimate motives may not be what they appear. The moonchild rituals are carried out in southern Italy, but the occult organizations are based in Paris and England. At the end of the book, the war breaks out, and the white magicians support the Allies, while the black magicians support the Central Powers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of Japanese fairy tales is the outcome of a suggestion made to me indirectly through a friend by Mr. Andrew Lang. They have been translated from the modern version written by Sadanami Sanjin. These stories are not literal translations, and though the Japanese story and all quaint Japanese expressions have been faithfully preserved, they have been told more with the view to interest young readers of the West than the technical student of folk-lore. Grateful acknowledgment is due to Mr. Y. Yasuoka, Miss Fusa Okamoto, my brother Nobumori Ozaki, Dr. Yoshihiro Takaki, and Miss Kameko Yamao, who have helped me with translations. The story which I have named “The Story of the Man who did not Wish to Die” is taken from a little book written a hundred years ago by one Shinsui Tamenaga. It is named Chosei Furo, or “Longevity.” “The Bamboo-cutter and the Moon-child” is taken from the classic “Taketari Monogatari,” and is NOT classed by the Japanese among their fairy tales, though it really belongs to this class of literature. The pictures were drawn by Mr. Kakuzo Fujiyama, a Tokio artist. In telling these stories in English I have followed my fancy in adding such touches of local color or description as they seemed to need or as pleased me, and in one or two instances I have gathered in an incident from another version. At all times, among my friends, both young and old, English or American, I have always found eager listeners to the beautiful legends and fairy tales of Japan, and in telling them I have also found that they were still unknown to the vast majority, and this has encouraged me to write them for the children of the West...FROM THE BOOKS.

A River Sprite seeks solace in the arms of a human, as her world is disappearing. A moon child creeps from her Holt beneath an ancient tree, scenting the night airs, and is enveloped in the world of humans. The man who fell in love with death, who no longer wishes to live but cannot die tells his tale. Goats that debate in shady glens at night discuss revolution, Wolves that are men and men who are wolves wonder of their purpose in life. True love remains eternal in the worthiest of sad tales. These new Faerie and folk tales, of Scotland, from the pen of Raymond Walker, Author of "A River of Tears" and "The Secret Inside" embody the living soul of Scots folk and faerie tales. Enchanting, beautiful, haunting and timeless. Never have I read of such beauty so often as I have here. The innocence reverberates in every story. Rob Anderson. Author of "Elizabeth"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Ride Through Faerie & Other Poems is Clay Franklin Johnson’s debut collection of poetry in honor of John Keats on the bicentennial year of his tragic death in 1821. Clay’s poems, influenced by the darker side of Romanticism, capture atmospheres of nightmarish dreamscapes, often easing broodingly into “night-worlds” of otherworldly beauty, painting phantasmal scenes of visionary imagery, vivid with wondrous landscapes of the supernatural sublime, alive with “night-creatures” that exist in duality between dark and light, between death and life, and between this world and what waits on the other side. Clay’s poetry is obsessive, haunted by phantasms, ghosts of guilt, regret, longing, memories of lost loved ones, and possesses a particular penchant for that brooding, melancholy aesthetic of Gothic literature. The collection is passionately inspired by Clay’s travels, containing poems of night-wanderings among the Gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey, a piece of macabre decadence written during a cold winter living in Edinburgh, and even a spiritual retelling of the faery Mélusine inspired by a Shelleyan sort of illusion upon the enchanted waters of Asturian seas that whispers with illusory voices and hallucinatory madness. Clay has collaborated with the artist Eli John who has produced evocative illustrations for leading genre publishers in both the US and UK. Eli’s stunning artwork in this collection, created by densely layering elements of photography, traditional drawing, painting, and collage, has brought brilliant visual illustration to Clay’s poetry, capturing haunting atmospheres and night-worlds in poems such as “Lines Written by Moonlight at Whitby Abbey”, “The Fires of Ecstasy at Samhuinn”, “My Little Green Secret”, and “Edinburgh Ecstasies”.
