As the plot gradually escalates to a dramatic climax, the reader might also enjoy the captivating human stories, the unlikely friendships and alliances, as well as a philosophical approach concerning how to live and how to die, while having a glimpse at Mykonos' globally famous hedonistic lifestyle in the late seventies. Finally, the witty and lively writing style of Zahos Hadjifotiou makes difficult for the reader to put this book down.

Book excerpt: This is the ethnography of the Mykoniots d’élection, a ‘gang’ of romantic adventurers who have been visiting the island of Mykonos for the last thirty-five years and have formed a community of dispersed friends. Their constant return to and insistence on working, acting and creating in a tourist space, offers them an extreme identity, which in turn is aesthetically marked by the transient cultural properties of Mykonos. Drawing semiotically from its ancient counterpart Delos, whose myth of emergence entails a spatial restlessness, contemporary Mykonos also acquires an idiosyncratic fluidity. In mythology Delos, the island of Apollo, was condemned by the gods to be an island in constant movement. Mykonos, as a signifier of a new form of ontological nomadism, semiotically shares such assumptions. The Nomads of Mykonos keep returning to a series of alternative affective groups largely in order to heal a split: between their desire for autonomy, rebellion and aloneness and their need to affectively belong to a collectivity. Mykonos for the Mykoniots d’élection is their permanent ‘stopover’; their regular comings and goings discursively project onto Mykonos’ space an allegorical (discordant) notion of ‘home’.

Book excerpt: What sort of mad longing besets a woman—nearing fifty and recently widowed—to sell everything she owns, buy an around-the-world airline ticket, pack a single suitcase, and set off alone on a year-long journey without a plan or agenda? When Your Heart Says Go answers that question. Set in 1990–’91, Judy’s story takes readers from San Diego through eleven European countries, the then-Soviet Union, and finally India, during the lead-up to the first Gulf War. Explorations of foreign locales and interactions with strangers and acquaintances who become a lifeline to friendship are interspersed with occasional flashbacks to Judy’s life with her beloved husband, Tom, as well as his illness and death. Descriptions of sites historic and current serve as both daily life and background for Judy’s struggle to find her way as a sober, single, independent woman in the vast world as it edges toward the collapse of the Soviet Union and war in the Middle East. The outer journey serves as a container for the inner; the more Judy experiences of the world, the more she learns about herself—and the closer she gets to realizing her lifelong dream of being a writer.

Download or read book The Blue Riders' Club written by Johnny Blue and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blue Riders Club is based on a real-life group of philogynists living in modern day Europe who took their name from "Der Blaue Reiter," an expressionist art movement originating in Germany in 1911. The story begins with this posse of hand picked Lotharios being invited to Paris by a wealthy nightclub owner for an all expenses paid mystery rendezvous. As they arrive at the chosen location, each character is introduced to the reader, and it is revealed that this "dirty dozen of debauchery" is being assembled to help write a 21st century "seduction manual" to be presented to each of their sons on the occasion of their 21st birthday. The book is the product of these brainstorming sessions and is an "Art of War" meets "Kama Sutra" style "bible" of seduction. The manuscript blends the philosophical musings of "Sophie's World," the humor of "Sex and the City," and the sexual candour of "The Bride Stripped Bare." It is a "boys'" own literary rebuttal to the multi-million copy bestseller "The Rules" in a unique mix of the narrative and "how to" genres, loaded with risque humor. Each chapter is introduced with a transcript recorded during the meetings in a swanky Parisian bar. The dialogues are in the tradition of Plato's "Republic" however the subject matter and quirky verbal exchanges are more reminiscent of Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs. These humorous slices of real life banter between the characters serve as a relevant prelude to the theme of each chapter and make reference to famous artists, writers and scientists throughout history. They also explore the thoughts of great philosophers in relation to sex, and the characters' interpretation of their ideas. Within each chapter, the "How to" element offers the layman practical strategies for meeting, attracting and bedding women successfully. Included are detailed methods of approaching and seducing women in any situation, the philosophies and psychology of attraction, proven tactics for dating, descriptions of sexual techniques and the makeshift sexual positions, and a comprehensive guide to specific nightclubs around the world. In addition to this eclectic instruction, each "player" delivers witty personalized tips and opinions on chosen topics to cover all the possible scenarios a girl-crazy reader may encounter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael McCarty has played a major role in defining a uniquely modern American attitude to cooking, dining, and entertaining since 1979, when he opened his first acclaimed Michael's restaurant in Santa Monica, California. McCarty's approach, now enjoyed on both coasts with the opening of Michael's New York in 1989, has always been refreshingly simple: start with the best ingredients, cook them in simple ways that highlight their natural qualities, pair them with great wines, and serve them in a relaxed yet stylish setting. The result, in Michael's own words, should be a "great party," which this book makes possible for any home cook. Adding to the lively spirit of Welcome to Michael's are the voices of dozens of luminaries from the worlds of entertainment, the arts, the media, business, politics, and cooking who share their own insightful, sometimes irreverent opinions about the Michael's experience. The result is a book to be savored on many levels: as a guide to cooking for yourself, your family, and your friends and to entertaining with style; as a primer on the rewarding relationship between food and wine; and as an experience that comes as close as words and pictures possibly can to enjoying a meal at one of Michael's restaurants, surrounded by the luminous personalities who dine there.

Book excerpt: At the conclusion of STEENIE OSHEA, her niece, Aine OShea Connolly demands her own story. The copper-haired, green-eyed seventeen year-old strolls down Galway Bay, rows the empty curagh out to the mysterious white traveling ship, climbs the rope ladder and peers into depictions of tableaus, each illustrating unforgettable, future scenes. Aine, now 22 in this sequel, follows these four tableau journeys to Belfast, Taos, Crete and Gelati, all lay lines on the planet. In this tale of magical realism, she discovers that five authors have written identical childrens books in Belfast; that a white dome, mountain city awaits victims of the archaics in Taos; that the archeological site of Knossos holds secrets in Crete; and that a strange design-pattern flows through the ancient, Gelati monastery/academy located near Tskhaltubo, Georgia, a former Soviet Republic. On the path, Aine meets a variety of people who gift her with indispensable experiences that lead to her own transformations. On this historic, travel journey, she climbs mountains, explores underground sites and sails the Aegean Sea before returning to her home in Galway, five years hence.

Book excerpt: A memoir that looks at the author's relationships as seen through the art of Claude Monet. The Color of the Sunset makes a gesture toward Impressionism and toward impressions of a life viewed near the end of middle age. Marie Masters successfully braids her own history with Monet's legacy of "beauty, love and light." These two elements contrast each other, creating an energy that wouldn't exist if either were presented alone. For anyone who has ever wondered about life beyond divorce and failed relationships, here is a realistic but hopeful story about trying again. * Explore how relationships factor into life's metamorphosis. * See how art expresses the most fleeting, transformative moments. * Experience the heartache and the bliss of searching for love. "This memoir presents the author's relationships to various men and to the paintings of Claude Monet in thoughtful and interesting ways. Masters awakens insights into herself and courageously reveals some of her own flaws as well." Daniel Minock author of Thistle Journal: And Other Essays
